Replying because I wish I had known at 19 what I finally learned at 47. At 19, you can probably get away with weighing yourself every week once you get to maintenance, but do continue to weigh in after you lose the 30 pounds. That way, they won't creep up on you Yo yo dieting is really hard on your body, and harder as you…

Like most of the other posters, I've opted for smaller portions less often, but I haven't taken cheese "off the plate" as it were. I don't have it as often, and I have only a one ounce portion at a time, but I still eat it. My only advice is to make a time to eat cheese when you can eat it slowly and appreciate it. My…

Hi. I'm Emma. I'm 5'1.5", and I've lost almost 55 pounds since mid-June. I started at 220, and am at 166.6, with a goal of 133 or so. I've lost the weight with portion control and deliberate choices. I still choose ice cream, or a cookie, but I choose them in small portions and (generally) when the calories remaining allow…

For the body fat reading, all I can suggest is trying a few methods of calculating and taking the average, or check over a period of time and weights (historical if available). *I* wouldn't worry about it that much, but then I am not doing any effective training or core exercises so I have a pretty high percentage. It's…

Calories cannot tell time. For me, the rare occasion when I eat late is no big deal. Neither is a one-off (or two-off) on logging fewer than 1200 calories. One study suggests metabolic shutdown only happens with sustained starvation mode eating. I recommend researching metabolic shutdown/slowdown if you're worried and pick…

Hi! I'm Emma, and over the past 6 months I've lost 45 of the 90 pounds I set out to lose. First, this is really long. I apologize. How I did it (or "what worked *for me*"): First and foremost, and this is a good one if you can model it for your kids and teach them healthy habits from the start - find a couple of fruits and…

I'm a good six months away from maintenance, but it seems to me it's all about sustainability. If you're looking only at the goal weight, you're missing the big picture. I committed, when I started, to finding a plan that I could live with for the rest of my life. Some plans I have followed turned into a full time job, and…

I can't exercise at work; I can't exercise on light rail. Those are when I'm on Facebook. :shrugs: .

As noted above, drinking more beverage may suffice for your purposes. My experience is that the micronutrients in additives seems to impact absorption and retention. I feel like my body retains water more if I drink water with additives (fruit juice (2 oz. in 12 oz. water), or drink tea. Your mileage may vary.

It looks like it took me 2.5 months. I've lost 35 in 4.5 months, so the weight loss slowed after the first 25 pounds. It takes what it takes.

Have you tried changing the type of workout you are doing (i.e., stationary bike instead of running, or swimming instead of biking, or whatever)? Or upping the intensity with Hi Intensity Interval Training? Those can help kick a body out of a plateau.

Hi! I'm Emma. I had an epiphany that "dieting" "until I hit a certain weight" was a roller coaster trap. I need to have a plan I can live with for the rest of my life. For me, that's been tracking what I eat and generally staying within the guidelines for the pace of weight loss I want to achieve (I'm almost half way to my…

I've lost 35 pounds in 4.5 months with diet modification alone. I've plateaued a bit, so now I think I need to change things up a bit and kick my body out of complacency for more weight loss. I bought a bicycle and plan to hit the gym for some jump rope sessions. Plus, eggnog lattes arrive on Saturday. I've learned that I…

Why do you ask? As a friend of mine says, "don't salt somebody else's fries". Objectively, I am curious about his energy levels in the apparent absence of protein, but that may not be an issue for him. Otherwise, calories can't tell time. Is he making healthy choices at night? The total number of calories, and the quality…

Denial is my big binge trigger, so nothing is off the table. For me, the really relevant data are the first two columns. (Apart from my two favorite candies not being on the chart.) If I want a piece of candy, and since having one won't trigger a need/desire to eat all of the candy, I'll have the piece of candy and factor…

Are you drinking green tea, white tea, or black tea? Or fruit "tea" (they're actually tisanes)? It depends on whose advice you consider sound. Some sources say that we should have only 1-2 servings of tea a day (including green tea). Others say that the negative effects of anything that leads you to drink more water are…

Hi. My name is Emma and I'm 6/16 of the way to my 90 pound loss, but the journey won't end there. My journey continues through the rest of my life, because I want to maintain at 130. That won't happen if I don't change my eating/exercise habits. It was perilously easy to get to where I am, and I'm weary of the roller…

Belly dance. It's all about form and it's still a cardio burn.

Bread (and butter, or oil and vinegar) and whole milk (as in two lattes a day, and cheese, and . . . . And 50 calorie tea biscuits (times six). I'm almost halfway to my goal, and my mantra is "knowledge is power". Sure, I can have that 190 calorie donut. Would I like to bike for 30 minutes, or would I like to jump rope for…

Can you go back to tracking what you eat when you get back? If so, make mindfully aware choices - including mindful indulgence, if you choose - while you are on vacation, and don't worry about it, then get back on track when you get home. I've done that for three or four days several times since I started. If you think you…

Once or twice a month I will pick one meal (usually a weekend breakfast) to be mindfully indulgent and not fret about calories or nutrients. It's worked for the past 150 days, and I've lost 36 of the 90 pounds I set out to lose. I still estimate what I ate during that meal, and track my daily intake including that estimate.

Congratulations! My plan is similar to yours; it's good to know it works!

A few days does not have to be a big deal. You could choose to just have anything you want, and do anything you want, and get back to "on plan" when you return. If you choose to stay on plan, or to be mindful about your trip, I would say, plan ahead. Mindful that this is in complete absence of knowledge of your usual…

Congratulations! Also, congratulations on recognizing that healthy food choices and activity don't have an end point.

Plan your meals? Pack lunch/dinner so you don't have to think about it?

I declared yesterday a cheat day - huge project at the office; boss provided a deli sandwich tray; co-workers took me for granted. So when I got home, I had a (bar style) White Russian. Then I had eggs and crackers for dessert, because I actually like poached eggs and crackers and it was an easy dinner. End result? 158…

Belly dancing. You may have to modify some things, or it might help you build control and flexibility.

Lifestyle change. Knowledge is power. I *know* I need to work out more, but so far changing my eating habits has helped me lose over 30 pounds in less than 4 months. I need to be aware of what I am eating, and how much of it I eat, and that isn't going to change. I've made some modifications and choices along the way - I…

::hugs:: You have some good strategies for curbing the binge eating. Can you work any vegetables into your diet? Red bell peppers, cucumbers, spinach? Red bell peppers and cucumbers are good carriers for hummus. Maybe a parfait with chia seeds and fruit? Or fruit and quinoa? You're also binge eating some very water dense…

Somebody brought donuts to my office too. She had a bad drive in, so compensated with donuts. I had one. Krispy Kreme, with superfine sugar. 181 calories. I still have nearly 700 calories left for the day, and only a few more hours during which I need to think about what I might eat. I have a stash of 300 calorie dinners…
