  • I'm a guy...but same boat. 193, trying to get to 185. Had been 181 18 months ago, but 184-186 is my best weight. Been stuck around 193-196 all year. Crazy part is I'm working out a LOT harder than I did when I lost the weight. It's not the number. I had a lot of clothes altered and/or bought a different size. I'm right in…
  • I'm with this. I wonder if the solution is working more on maintaining (and possibly growing) lean muscle mass rather than focusing on solely on weight loss/calorie deficit. Kind of like Tom Venuto's Feed the Muscle/Burn the Fat book, the key to avoiding the skinny fat look is getting leaner, not being a smaller version of…
  • I remember the Friday after Thanksgiving of 2014. I had gotten down to my all time low the week before. I made the mistake of getting on the scale after going all out on Thanksgiving. I think I was up 5 lbs. I pounded out a LONG run trying to make it up. Now I don't even get on the scale. My wife had a milestone birthday…
  • If you're looking at doing a 5k, you may want to download a C2k5 program. That'll slowly help you build up the endurance you need to run the race. Most programs are 8 weeks, but you have plenty of time so you could repeat some weeks if you need to. The heat beats down even the most experienced runners more than anything…
  • Congrats on signing up for your first race. Most C25k programs are about 8 weeks, so you have more than enough time to prepare. If you follow the program, I'll bet you'll be more than ready months before then....
  • It's tough to do, but a lot of good ideas here. It was my wife's birthday and we went out for Mexican food. You have to be REALLY disciplined while that bowl of chips is just sitting there. Agree with the suggestions of corn tortillas instead of flower. And have them take away any condiments you have on the side of your…
  • Actually just did a hydrostatic test earlier this month at a company that uses the exact same set up (van that travels to local gyms/places). The one thing they emphasized was blowing all the air you possibly could out...then they would count to 5 while everything but your nose/mouth was submerged. I guess you could try to…
  • I'm still trying to figure out what that magical formula is. I'd gotten down to my goal weight, gained 12 lbs and a lot harder to get it off than the original weight. I'm easily burning twice as many calories per week between running and working out than I did when I originally lost weight. (And rarely eat them all back) I…
  • In before somebody posts the chart and insists 'you're doing it wrong'
  • Sugar cravings are the worst. I'm a big believer that there is a near physical chemical reaction a lot of us have to sugar. If you have Netflix check out the documentary 'Fed Up' about how much our sugar intake has increased in the US. It's like a runaway train. When I eat a lot of processed sugar, I crave it. I can kill a…
  • I'm easing in, so I got a Forerunner 220. The GPS on my phone isn't working correctly and the Apple Store couldn't figure out what's wrong. I didn't want to buy a whole new phone or drop $299 for a replacement, so I opted for a watch instead....
  • Another vote for easing in. I did the C25k a couple of years ago. Then I got bit by the bug and wanted to increase my mileage quickly. I ignored the 10% rule because I felt fine and that the extra days were easy. Ended up with an overuse injury and out of commission for a few weeks. I think your plan of walking those days…
  • Amazon just delivered a new Garmin running watch....(my first one).... so I guess it's time for me to jump back in.... :) I stopped running and started doing a boot camp 4-5 days a week. Going to mix 3 days of running back in. Two short days and a long day. I'll be joining the May challenge...
  • Good socks are worth the money....lesson learned the hard way.
  • Just don't let it turn into a cheat weekend. Or use it as an excuse to ease back into your former plan. One meal/day may wipe out your net calorie gain for the previous week. But if you truly enjoyed it and hop back on your plan tomorrow - 'no harm, no foul)
  • I've always carried my phone....from the first step of C25k through every race and run I've had since then. May not make me a 'runner' to traditionalists, but it's what I'm used to. Plus I skip/change stations on Pandora (or switch back to my own playlists) to tuck the phone away for 30-120 minutes....
  • Love to see at the C25k'ers.....I was in your shoes 18 months ago. You're going to be amazed at what you'll be able to do in a few short months. Ran a 5 miles this morning...and had to get creative on my route due to a 5k going through the neighborhood.
  • True stuff. I hit a bit plateau at the beginning of the year when I added strength training to my regular running. The big thing that changed it was tracking my macros and making sure I was getting enough protein each day.
  • I may have my terms confused. MFP has me at 1792 calories...I usually keep it at that level, except days I workout or run where I add an additional 400 calories. I don't have an HRM, but based on most of the activities I would estimate it at more than that. I was adding 500 calories back for every hour I run. (I think I…
  • I've tried going with TDEE...but found I didn't have the energy to exercise like I wanted to. But maybe I can just try to add 100 and keep pushing through. I usually try to do 60-90 minute long runs on the weekend and when I do base calories only I completely run out of gas.
  • I use the standard earbuds for just that reason. Yeah, they are wired. But they always work. There is nothing worse than being on a run and having your earphones go dead.
  • Look at joining the monthly running challenge thread.... http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10344092/march-2016-running-challenge lots of runners of various abilities. There are always folks training for races of various lengths. It's a very fun and welcoming group.
  • Good job running the race. It's hard to maintain that balance between actively running and doing something else. I'm in a similar boat right now. I have another fitness program that that eats up the 3-4 days a week I used to run. I've gone back to doing my long runs on the weekends and am considering the idea of doing…
  • In fairness, she did say in the OP that she's run two HMs before, so it's not like the concept if foreign to her. If she can run a 8 miles at a comfortable pace...stretching it out to 13 in a month seems doable. It may not be a PR, but if it's about finishing, having fun and not eating the money, it seems reasonable.
  • Agree. And a lot of it depends on your goal. A lot of us run for the fitness aspect and calorie burn - but our overall body goals(especially for guys) are NOT to have an elite 'runner's build.'
  • A lot of truth to this. I got hit hard by the running bug when I started in fall of 2014. I ignonred the 10% rule because I 'felt fine' and you get this amazing feeling from being a 'non-runner' to feeling like you can run for miles every day. I ended up getting PTT and hard to cut back for a couple of months.
  • Sometimes your body just gets in a stall. It sucks. Been there and done that. Your doing all the things you should be doing and the scale just isn't moving. It gets incredibly frustrating. Keep doing the right thing and you'll start to get results. I was at my wit's end last month. I had been in a 6 week stall despite…
  • My buddy is a cyclist and talked about something similar. His mindset is attack hills rather than dread and slog up them. I've tried the same mentality as well...not sprinting, but making trying to actually pick up the pace up hills and ease back to recover at the end. Hill suck, but like other have said the one way to get…
  • True stuff here. running builds your cardio endurance - but you need to build up you strength as well. I started running in the fall of 2014. Ran a couple of 5ks, HMs and my training time was pretty static. For the last 6 weeks I've been doing mostly boot camp (Camp Gladiator) which is more cross training/overall…
  • Ran a lot last year, but got caught up in another exercise program that's filling up my weeks. But I started my Sunday run again at the end of February. Got a nice 5 mile run in perfect conditions.
