I've been thinking about seeing a trainer actually. I have lifted a lot in my life but not when in my 50s.

My achy/creaky knees are from carrying around extra weight and standing most of the day (I work at a stand up computer station). I can do squats and lunges without too much discomfort but wonder if I should plan eventually to up my game by adding weights. By "overall fitness" I mean toning up and building some muscle to…

Just overall fitness. In the past when I worked out a lot I used dumbbells and barbells but now that I'm older and more creaky I need to watch it with overloading my knees.

come back and let us know?

I just ordered a book which is about the same strategy! This is actually what I've been doing to lose 20 lbs so far, but I think my mistake has been to eat very low calorie lunches and dinners and expect to fast from early evening to the next noon. It wasn't enough calories.

My son and I went to Ihop recently w here I was disappointed to find they had removed their grilled chicken sandwich. I had expected to get that. The menu flagged low calorie dishes - almost nothing. They did have a better salad than before, but just lettuce and a little tomato.
-
I envy you that. We have a lot of Mexican and related places here but I haven't found a dish like that.

My problem in this regard is the near constant desire to have affirmation that I'm on the right track. Losing "only" a pound a week is hard because of the lack of change most days. So I do try to focus on things I can do to eat better even if I never lose a pound! Like kicking the junk food and Coke habits, loading up on…

After two c-sections, when my youngest was one, I ate low-fat and worked out pretty hard and lost the belly. Unfortunately it eventually all went to "pot" and I have a belly to lose again, and I'm much older. : - /

How do you prepare the chia or do you eat it on other food? So far I've only eaten it on salad.
-
what kind of exercises does the body builder have you do? Anything that can be done at home with minimal equipment?

I also took the quiz about signs of food addiction and it was like the whole thing was written with me in mind. I don't really care if one calls it "addiction", the point is the problem areas of eating. The impulses are VERY strong. Speaking for myself, something "clicked" in me when I talked to my doctor about my weight.…

I do want to get back to weight work. IN the past when I was thin I lifted a lot of weight. It makes a huge difference. I used to have great shoulders!
-
I want to be steady, too, just have to be patient about the slow part and avoid "diet" thinking, versus "permanent life style change". Also I feel like I"m a winner every day I skip the Coke and junk food. Finally, it just occurred to me to keep in mind how heavy 20 lbs of anything is, not inconsiderable!

that is beautiful. thanks yoovie

thanks to all of you...gave me just want I wanted, some perspective on this issue. It actually did take a long time to pile on the weight so it's not very fair to expect it to fall off just like that. To help with this I have been setting up mini goals for myself, most just an additional few pounds at a time, to give me…

thanks, we do use frozen veggies a lot. I think my problem is that I buy salad fixing then get busy and don't make enough salad! I've never cared for frozen fruit though.
-
Another issue of course is the season. Off-season a lot of fruit is not right and some of it spoils. We get used to peaches at the farmer's market for example but buying them in the grocery store off-season is largely pointless. That's too bad when it comes to berries, they are so good and good for you. I need to remind…

Right now I mostly feel guilty because I let a bag of chopped cabbage in the crisper go bad because I was not eating as many salads ( eating other veg). I've also lost kiwi out of forgetting they are mostly ripe when bought. I also like containers of fresh salsa from the store but that goes bad real fast. So I guess it's…

By probiotics what do you mean, something besides yogurt?

Thank you for all the information. I do drink a good bit but maybe not enough. I have chia but haven't been eating salads lately; need to get back to that. And I definitely should be walking anyway! Just haven't made it a routine. I remembered that I have a couple of boxes of Gnu Bars so I had one last night. They…

thanks for all for replies. I have never heard of magnesium oxide. Is that available as a tablet?

I like broccoli a lot but most vegetables are find. I am trying to eat a Macintosh apple and an orange a day so those are my favorites.
-
I like eating at night, too, but it's like a gateway drug for me. Eating a smart snack just makes me want to eat more.

Today I also asked him to look around Whole Foods for a side dish with beans, and he came home with some chickpeas in a light dressing (might be cilantro). He loved that I ate it up! : - )

It's pretty easy to skip the popcorn at the theaters here. Even the plain is so greasy it just ends up making me queasy. Now a box of Raisinettes is another story...!
-
I could also start a jar to put money in that I was spending at drive-throughs and convenience stores! Wow, I would be rich in no time. ; - )

I remember an article about how Beyonce lost her baby weight quickly and what she claimed to eat was shockingly little. Especially given the hard work she must do in her concerts and shows. I thought it was a disturbing message especially to young girls who might think that meant they should be eating 1100 calories a day…

thanks to the great tips on this thread. I am also cutting back on bread, rice, and pasta. I substitute whole wheat bread/rolls and brown rice when I can. The family doesn't like whole wheat pasta so I will probably just eat my own food on pasta night.

I got burned out on logging calories (sorry, MFP) and went back to overeating which is a real shame because where might I be now? I am approaching food as if I'm counting. If you don't want to really change your eating habits try learning about portion sizes. There are many tricks for measuring appropriate portions without…
