starting again...issues with recreational eating
I've lost and regained the same 30 lbs for years now. It takes a lot of overeating to pack the pounds back on. I'm sick of being a slave to my junk food impulses. I have many non-hunger reasons I eat the wrong food. One of them is basically recreational, something to do that isn't work-related, provides transitory…

after taking a break
I lost 30 lbs, then, as I have several times before, lost motivation and reverted to old eating patterns. I am just lucky that I seem to be at a new setpoint and I didn't regain, but I still feel down that I haven't stayed the course (my goal is to lose 80 lbs total). One of my resolutions is to stop eating restaurant food…

going for a middle path
I've lost a chunk of the weight I want to lose (30+ out of 80). I'm glad about that but have decided that my process needs work. A lot of the time I ate very low calorie, only to have frequent bouts of rebound eating and feeling bad about it. So tired of both strict willpower and nonsensical overeating. So I'm challenging…

Fitbit and calories burned
Anyone use Fitbit? I think the number of calories they claims are burned by exercise have to be off, perhaps really off. Does anyone know if this is the case?

do you have a food you know is not ideal?
I've gone back to eating fruit Greek yogurt which makes me feel a little guilty because of all the sugar, but it just tastes good to me (I tried plain yogurt with my own flavoring but didn't like it as much). I figure that since I get little sweets otherwise I'm just being 10% bad. Do you have a food like this?

psychological milestone
Today I hit 200 lbs which is both a lot of weight loss over the past few months, and a psychological milestone because it's as low as I've been in years. Last year I got down to this but gave up and went back to overeating. I was exhausted by counting. This time I am practicing "calorie awareness" based in large part to…

getting noticed
I'm presently in the "danger zone" where I've given up a few times before. It's the 30 lb mark. I've always gotten into a bad head space at that mark. Things like being tired of counting, clothes not feeling different (I mostly wear stretchy things versus fitted), and nobody noticing. So it was nice the other day when my…

changing taste buds
I just read an article in a fitness magazine that says after giving up junk food the taste bubs often change so the food ends up tasting too strong. Coincidentally yesterday I had some chips for the first time in quite a while and they WERE too strong. I stopped after several of them. It was easy to put the (single…

eating out too much
I've decided that I eat restaurant food just way too much, even if I make a point of getting low calorie dishes. It's much easier to eat leaner at home. So I've resolved to cut back to once a week. It will have to be a choice between Friday night take-out or my tradition of eating out with my son for Sunday lunch.

psychological hurdle
As of today I'm at the 3-month mark in my current attempts to lose the weight. I've had a pattern over recent years of "lasting" that long then just going back to overeating. Also at the 30 lb mark (I'm at 26). I feel myself getting hungry, feeling deprived. And I'm really not! It's all in my head! But if I can make it…

do you eat protein/fiber/nutrition bars?
I tend to grab one some days when I'm hungry mid-afternoon. I like Gnu bars for fiber and Luna bars for protein. Any other favorites out there?

Fitbit
Probably there are plenty of threads here about the Fitbit but I'm excited because I just ordered one. I started using my pedometer recently and found I was logging a lot more steps than I thought. But it's on a flimsy clip and I've dropped it several times. It's tough and goes back together but I keep "losing" my steps…

probiotics
I got the tip here about trying a probiotic supplement to help with my constipation. Glad to say that it's really helped! Either that or it's all the prunes I'm eating! ;)

shocking calories
We're eating at Ihop tomorrow so I looked at their nutrition guide and the calories for almost everything are way too high! I even saw a salad with chicken that is over 1000! About all I can come up with is soup and salad or maybe a kids' grilled cheese but presumably that's on white bread, eww.

exercise and intermittant fasting
If you follow the IF protocol, do you like to work out during or outside of the fasting period? A book I read on the subject was adamant about working out (usually) in the morning before the first meal of the day (midday).

saved by the review
One thing I really like to do is to out to a movie and drink Coke and eat candy. I've switched to animal crackers but I still want the Coke. I've resolved to only drink Coke at a movie (used to drink 2-3 a day). But now the movie had better be special. I was thinking of "Jupiter Rising" but a review made me realize I would…
-
metabolism and eating frequency
I've been catching up on reading my fitness magazines and they constantly state, as if natural law, to eat frequently in order to rev up your metabolism. But is there actual evidence that this happens? Or in fact is metabolism a fairly steady function, maybe improved by exercise instead? I'm asking this as a person who is…

what does your doctor say?
In another thread the OP mentioned being measured by a nurse and told her waist measurement was too high. I was struck by this because my doctors NEVER bring up my weight unless I talk about it first. And I have a good 60-70 lbs to lose to be in decent shape. Including the kind of belly fat that is very unhealthy. I also…

breakfast
For a while now I have been following a program in which I fast from around 9pm to the following noon. I don't miss breakfast as a meal but I've been concerned about losing some nutrients this way, specifically calcium and fiber. I haven't found good ways to make up for the loss despite snacking on fruit. I do eat cottage…

gaining muscle mass?
Is it really likely that one will GAIN much muscle mass or is the point really to lose fat, preserve the muscles you already have, and achieve a more favorable percentage of body composition as muscle? What does it really take to gain pounds of muscles?

true hunger
Until last Fall I was basically an eating machine, especially junk food. A lot of the time I told myself I was hungry or tired and wanted Coke to perk me up (never really did). I am now eating much less and I find that if I'm hungry between meals, just keeping busy makes the sensation go away. I am definitely ready for my…

victory over Seven-11
Until my current weight loss program my MO included daily runs to the convenience store to stock up on junk food to eat at night. I was too cagey to just buy large bags of chips to keep at home. I hid the wrappers carefully. Well, now I can't remember the last time I went there! At first I thought about going since it was…

bad example for kids
Last night I was faintly shocked when my teenage daughter rushed to hide a carton of ice cream rather than be caught eating it by her father. I talked to her about it today; I told her NOT to go down this road of hiding food. That has been my M.O. for years! She is slim and active and has a healthy relationship with food…

Kirstie Alley inspiring story
There are some stories on the web right now reporting that Kirstie lost 50 lbs in 2014 using Jenny Craig. That sort of weight loss is great, but in line with the rate of losing 1-2 lbs most weeks. She looks really good and sounds really happy with her life, exercising regularly on her bike and eating sensibly. I'm…

do you treat yourself?
How often do you give yourself a treat, whatever you consider that to be? Most days my daughter and I are indulging in a couple of squares of very dark chocolate. That feels indulgent but not disastrous.

question about the medicine ball
In a magazine today I saw an ab exercise using an 8 lb medicine ball. Does it have to be the ball for some reason or would an 8-lb dumbbell work just as well? The exercise involves swinging the ball using both hands.

walking on the evening news
The evening news with Brian Williams ran a story about the health benefits of walking. They had a lot of footage of people walking but many were basically out on a stroll. The story did say that they mean brisk walking, not ambling. I think it would be helpful if such stories would use a model doing exactly what they are…

eat right and no need to count calories
I've read in a number of books and articles, one today, that if you are eating right (or healthy or clean or however you call it) then you don't need to measure food or count calories. Since this is a calorie-counting site I assume you have not found this to be the case? Is it likely one will continue to carry excess fat…

salads at Giant Grocery stores
I've been focussing on upping my vegetables and have discovered that the deli at our local Giant grocery stores have a few nice salads that aren't all laden with mayo. For example "health salad" is a colorful slaw with a vinegary dressing. I got another one today that has cabbage and broccoli. They also have cucumber &…
