squats
Is the basic squat always going to be a worthwhile move or do you need to bump up the intensity with dumbbells, barbells, one-legged squats, or something like that?

how long before you got your eating plan right?
After several weeks of doing well I have derailed lately in the evenings. Checking in with my body, I think I have been trying to get by on too little food during the day. By 9pm I have been very hungry and end up reaching for bad food choices. We don't have a lot of junk in the house but enough to eat wrong. I am going to…

good choices at chain restaurants
My family loves to eat out or get take-out a lot. I've been working on go-to dishes at local places. What do you like to get? Mine include: 1. Panera - I like the pick-two with green salad and a low-calorie sandwich like the barbecue flatbread. Also love their mac & cheese but not the calories! 2. Subway - turkey sub. Used…

hungry?
Do you get particularly hungry on your eating plan? If so, do you chalk it up to eating lean, or do you eat more if you are getting hungry?
-
perspective on speed of weight loss
I ran into a new book in which the author explains how she went from 230 to 140 which is exactly what I want to do. The blurb says it took her 2 years. Reading that I felt discouraged, "only" 45 lbs lost in a year? Am I delusional because I don't think that is enough? I have a terrible history of yoyo dieting and giving up…
-
fruits and veggies perishable
As a family we eat a LOT of produce but still some of it goes bad and then I feel guilty. Do you buy in small amounts several times a week to avoid this? I will go out of my way to restock oranges because I eat one a day.
-
do you take fiber supplement?
I'm in a strange situation since cutting out all the junk (tons) I was eating and switching to a low-calorie "good food" diet. I've actually developed constipation over this period. I'm eating fruit and vegetables just less food overall. It's possible that I"m not getting enough whole grain starches as I 've been cutting…

breakfast and metabolism
I've read lots of places that it's important to eat breakfast to get one's metabolism up for the day. Today I read in Weight Watchers that recent studies have found no difference in weight over a period of a few months in groups either eating or skipping breakfast. Perhaps this indicates that any bump-up in metabolism from…

competition with husband
I try not to talk too much about switching up my diet with the family because I feel it's bad luck or something. But I've noticed that my husband seems to be trying to compete with me in eating as many vegetables as possible! He's our cook and always makes two or even more which is great. I'm a very poor cook in…
-
embracing a small breakthrough
I'm working on correcting my bad eating habits. The big one is junk eating at night. But today I also had a small victory because I went to the movies and didn't either drink Coke or eat candy or popcorn. I understand that if you plan for the calories you can eat this stuff but that was never the case for me, pure add-on…

People Magazine weight loss issue
The current issue of "People" is the one where they profile people who lost around 100 or more pounds (doesn't say how long it took them or how long they've kept off the weight). they do provide sample daily eating plans. One person has lost the weight by eating raw vegan. I thought that was interesting. They also have a…

going cold turkey
Do you find there are foods or habits you have to just excise from your life in order to lose weight? Or do you do well with "moderation in all things"? My downfall is evening eating. When I'm not in control I eat a LOT at night. More recently I made myself a small snack and that worked for a while then it was like the…

exercise and sore knees?
I'm overweight/obese and have very sore knees. Do any of you weight-training pros have tips for lower body moves that don't put pressure on the knees? I can't get down on the ground because getting up again is a nightmare. thanks
-
compulsive eating
Do any of you identify yourself as having a compulsive eating problem? (hopefully one in recovery) I've had this for many years and tend to yo-yo between being very good and losing weight, then relapsing into the same old overeating pattern. I've tried various therapists and nutritionists who all have tons of great advice…

America is doomed
There shouldn't be confusion over why so many Americans are overweight when a popular pizza chain advertises on the radio a new "double pepperoni and bacon" pizza. I'm sure most people who eat something like that don't know or care how much fat and calories they are getting. The restaurant would say they are just giving…

Weight Watchers bathroom scale
I got one yesterday and so far have only one time gotten it to give a readout for all of the measurements that it takes (bone density for example). If you have one is there a trick to getting the readouts? I am stepping on the metal strips at the sides of the scale.

Dunkin Donuts cream cheese
I'm on the road tomorrow and might splurge on a bagel but I am unsure of the database entry for cream cheese. Does DD have cream cheese in packets and that is what the entries are for? When they put cream cheese on a bagel they usually slather it on.

impressed by the database
So far I can't think of any circumstances when the MFP database hasn't had an entry I can use. I thought for sure I'd stump it today when I wanted to see the nutrition information for an egg salad sandwich at Sheetz gas station (a very good egg salad sandwich!). Nope, it's in there. Store brand foods? In there. Deli salad…

dumping the white carbs
I've been trying to avoid white bread, rice, and pasta but this is what my husband the cook makes all of the time. We eat sliced whole wheat bread but he also serves baguettes, naan, etc with white flour. I'm the only one who eats brown rice (when I make my own) and nobody likes brown pasta. In the end I've basically x'ed…

went over and I'm OK with that
I went over my budget a little today but I'm OK with that because for me the big battle is to get rid of all the mindless eating of junky foods. I'm very mindful of what I eat now. My problem today was going way over with sodium thanks to salty ham for dinner and high sodium food from Boston Market.
-
calorie cycling
Do any of you have the strategy of mixing up your daily calories, low one day, more the next, etc? I've read that this is effective because it keeps your body guessing.
-
editing foods list
Is there a way to delete foods from the list of foods eaten recently? My list has gotten unwieldy and there are entries I don't need anymore.
-
gardening time
I worked in the garden for over 2 hours today and MFP gave me a silly amount of calories burned for that. I've chosen to disregard what it says because "gardening" can run the gamut from gently snipping off flower heads to weeding to digging holes and moving heavy plants. Clearly they all don't burn the same number of…
-
when it's not in the database
If you have a food not in the database do you just look for something similar and not be OCD about it? For example our local mom & pop has pizza but who knows the calories, etc? I've been in the habit of looking up something that sounds close and using that in my diary. Tonight it's Indian and I found my favorite dish in…
-
do you eat at night?
I've given up a lot to diet using MFP, stuff like chips, candy, Coke, 5-Guys burgers, you get the idea. I'm OK with that. But I'm not OK with the no-food-after-dinner approach. By the time 9pm rolls around I want to watch a DVD and have something fairly substantial to eat. I've been budgeting my calories and trying to eat…
-
Not using MFP right for the long haul?
MFP gives me a budget of 1680 calories a day to lose 1.5 lbs a week. All I"ve been doing is striving to get as much below that amount as I can. But when I did that in the past and lost slower than I wanted, I just gave up any effort and reverted to overeating. I want to be in it for the long haul this time. I'm thinking I…

hungry days
I've been doing pretty good lately in terms of not getting overly hungry between meals, until today when I've just been really hungry. Do you have on and off days like that?
-
fiber or protein bars?
If you eat nutrition bars do you prefer fiber or protein? I have a good fiber bar I like to eat around 3pm but I noticed when I saw a nutritionist that she pushed hard on extra protein. I tried the protein bars she recommended but found them distasteful.
-
digging holes
I spent time today digging up big plants and digging new holes and all I can find relevant in the MFP exercise database is "gardening, general". That's amusing because this work is more strenuous than just drifting around the yard pruning or weeding.

tracking salad
Just curious, do you measure and record your salad ingredients all the time? I feel like this is where counting gets way out of hand and (for me) hard to sustain. I've been on and off calorie (or points) counting several times these past years. I'm perfectionistic for a while then I get tired and give up. So I'm…
