when it's not in the database

If you have a food not in the database do you just look for something similar and not be OCD about it? For example our local mom & pop has pizza but who knows the calories, etc? I've been in the habit of looking up something that sounds close and using that in my diary. Tonight it's Indian and I found my favorite dish in the database, but the serving is "one plate". What's up with that? I'm trying to teach myself that half of the battle is just being aware of what I put in my mouth, even if the calories are sometimes very fudged.

For that kind of stuff I just use whats close. Whenever you go out to eat and espically at smaller places, odds are you wont find your exact dish. It's ok, just try and get close, and be aware of how much you're eating.

Example: I'm vegetarian, and there is a ramen place in town that serves a vegetarian ramen on sundays only. Well the MFP app doesnt have a vegetarian ramen option (if they did it would probably be top ramen and thats not close to what I ate), so I used another restaurants Pork Ramen option. Obviously I did not have pork ramen, but at least I can log something in the ballpark.

Yep - just log the closest thing and make your best educated guess. If something is listed as one plate and the calories seem really low I might log it as 1.5 or 2 servings just to be safe. I figure sometimes I'm probably over logging sometimes I'm probably under logging and really it will all even out in the end...

Yeah, I just log what's close. I'm currently in school in Oregon & a lot of the places I eat here are local & not in the database. For example, there's a mexican-food place on campus & I always get two sides of rice, a side of shredded chicken, & a side of cheese for a quick lunch because it's only like $2 - but it's not in the database. So I use Chipotle's 'side of rice' & 'side of chicken' & hope that it's at least in the ballpart,
