  • DDP Yoga is not hard to start at all. I originally looked into it for a client who has serious flexibility issues (I'm a trainer). When I saw it was developed by a former professional wrestler I thought "Oh please..." I had no idea who "DDP" was. Anyway, I have been very pleasantly surprised. I do it for myself now. He is…
  • Hey, how about Allen? MFP, running/walking and DDP Yoga right now.
  • Walking consistently will really go a long way. The COPD may mean she has to go slow and slowly increase her time. Walking is also very underrated as a core strengthener. It is those deep core muscles that keep you in an upright position. Think about getting a stability ball. Just sitting on that will help strengthen the…
  • I am one. If you decide to look for a trainer, ask about their certifications and education. There a many certifying bodies out there. Some of the reputable ones are NASM, The Cooper Institute, ACE and NSCA. If you belong to a gym, observe the trainers working with people to get an idea of the trainer's style. Think of…
  • The calorie estimates on cardio machines are notoriously inaccurate especially if they don't ask for you age and weight. I always log what my HRM says.
  • Just saw your next question... If you are using the bands with an exercise video, log the minutes as cardio. That is probably what it is. Most exercise videos are.
  • If you are walking on the treadmill, you log that was walking. The resistance bands are a little trickier. You could log the moves you do (bicep curls, shoulder press or whatever) under strength but you would have to estimate the weight used. Bands give you progressive resistance - the further you push or pull, the…
  • Go back and make sure your goals are set correctly. Are you nursing? Does it even ask you that? I can't remember. Nursing moms require more calories. Without knowing your particulars, I agree that 1860 sounds high.
  • Over 500 calories for a 30 minute workout? That doesn't seem right at all. I am not familiar with the Polar Personal Trainer site and I guess I'm not understanding why you are entering average and max heart rate there. Your watch that is actually measuring your heart rate is going to be more accurate than a number based on…
  • Try Fit Radio. You can find it in the app store. I think it is available for iPhone and android.
  • Being able to log calories burned in activities that don't involve running or cycling (like yoga or pilates). That would probably require an accurate HRM. Waterproof for swimming would be great. Don't care at all about the showering.
  • I second the Yoga recommendation. Look into DDP Yoga. It is very "guy friendly". In fact it used to be called Yoga for Regular Guys. There is a very inspirational video that went viral a couple of years ago: http://youtu.be/qX9FSZJu448 Check it out. I originally looked into it for a client of mine with serious flexibility…
  • A juicer will remove the fiber. Blending does not. You get the same fiber as with the whole fruits and veggies.
  • If you try Altra, they run small. I'd size up for sure.
  • That makes absolutely no sense to me. A calorie is a measure of energy. If half a banana has 50 calories it still has 50 calories when it is chopped up or blended. Blended fruits and veggies are quicker to digest because they are already partially broken down, but your body will break down and use all the nutrients in a…
  • Look into DDP Yoga. It doesn't require any equipment and is almost zero impact. It is a modified form of yoga that incorporates some physical therapy principals and even some MMA type moves. I've noticed and increase in my strength and flexibility in just a few months. The routines are easily modified depending on your…
  • If you are talking about weight loss, I think it is more effective because it keeps your heart rate up.
  • Some good certifying bodies are: National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), The Cooper Institute in Dallas, TX, American Council on Exercise (ACE), and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). There are probably others that are reputable, but I know these are good. I have certs from NASM and Cooper. As far…
  • Any heart rate monitor WITHOUT a chest strap is not going to be very accurate. They just don't work very well. The activity trackers like Fitbit, Jawbone One and the new IFit Active track steps taken, estimate calories used and distance travelled. None of them track heart rate.
  • Love it! I originally looked into it for a client with serious flexibility issues (I'm a fitness professional). I honestly didn't expect much but was really surprised. I've been doing it for myself since February and can see a big difference. If you are looking at the program for major weight loss, that comes from the…

  • They both looked pretty good to me. You may be doing these things. I couldn't really tell, but always make sure you are pulling your shoulders down and bellybutton to spine.
  • AMEN, brother! There are these blood tests that people are taking now to determine which foods they are "sensitive" too. As a result parents are sending long lists of food their kids are not suppose to have to schools and it is becoming a nightmare. I just recently read an article that stated that doctors are becoming…
  • Yoga can help you build strength and flexibility. There are different kinds of yoga. Some are very meditative and relaxing and some are not. I do a modified form of yoga (DDP yoga) that has an emphasis on keeping your heart rate up a bit. I am not the Zen/meditation type, so it really appeals to me but maybe not to…
  • The "guts" are the same as I understand it. All Vitamixes will give you super smooth smoothies and make hot soups even the new "personal" version.
  • I had the same problem. I started doing yoga (specifically DDP yoga - you can google it) and after a couple of weeks the pain was completely gone.
  • I have a 750 and LOVE it. The presets are a real convenience especially the "wash". Set it and walk away. We use the Vitamix every morning for smoothies and often for soup. The Harvest Cheddar Soup and the Pizza Soup are our favorites. Both those recipes are on the Vitamix site BTW. If my house were on fire I would grab my…
  • It isn't possible to spot reduce. Your body decides where the weight comes off and when. You can work your core till you can't work it anymore, but without the general weight loss, you'll have really strong abs under a bunch of fluff. It sounds like you've had success with what you are doing. Congratulations and keep it up!
  • My treadmill has IFit which lets me choose route (or even draw one) and then I can see the route on the tablet in my treadmill. It uses Google maps so I can see a street view as I run or walk. The treadmill automatically changes incline based on the terrain. Is that what you are talking about?
  • Look into DDP Yoga. It is a modified form of yoga that incorporates isometrics into the moves. It was developed by a former professional wrestler ( I know, I almost ignored it because of that ), who blew out his back. There is virtually no impact and he is really good at encouraging modifications to fit whatever…
  • Sadly it isn't possible to spot reduce. Your body determines where it stores and loses fat. Working out your arms may tone up the muscle underneath, but it won't cause fat to come off.
