  • That's what I'm thinking. I get the impression that none of these workouts are followed to the letter.
  • This one is both. It's 4 x 75 BUILD and DESC, :20RI.
  • When doing build and descend intervals, do you start the next interval faster than you ended or faster than you began the previous interval? Or do you just start faster than the average pace of your previous interval?
  • I saw a YouTube video yesterday on a fly drill that supposedly helps you learn the rhythm of the kick and is supposed to be more relaxing for beginners. The drill involves extra kicks between the pulls. You basically do one full stroke and after the recovery, keep your arms out in front (like you're about to catch the…
  • You know those flags overhead at each end of the pool? Those flags are for backstrokers. When you see the flags overhead, start counting how many strokes it takes you before you hit the wall and subtract one stroke from the total. The number you're left with is the number of strokes you should count each time you see the…
  • Macstraw's advice is your best bet. I recommend taking a few swim lessons if your gym offers them. You can take one class a week and then practice on your own between lessons. There are also swimming videos on YouTube for beginners. Just search YouTube for "swimming beginners". And you can always post questions here. There…
  • That sounds awesome! I think I'm going to try it next!
  • Contemplating on what Nancy is contemplating.
  • I'm grateful that it comes after fly in the IM. It's my rest stroke. I even find breast to be more strenuous than back.
  • Backstroke WAS my best stroke but I'm not a big fan of it either. For one thing, I can't swim straight - I think my left leg kicks harder than my right. And I always get different stroke counts between the flag and the wall so I either hit the wall or have to keep dunking my head backwards to see the wall while my head is…
  • Thanks, Professor! Now I get it. So the "on 1:15 or 1:30" means if I finish before either of those times (depending on fitness level), I use the remaining time to rest or I can just rest for 10 seconds before starting the next round? Here's the entire pre-set. I didn't post it because I knew if I just understood the first…
  • I sometimes log my late night snacks on the next day's food log so people won't know eat late at night.
  • Looking down at the person below her.
  • This is how they do it in bariatrics only they do it for a longer period of time. Bariatric patients are limited to about 500 calories a day in the beginning (for the first month or so) and are able to slowly increase their calories over time. Bariatric surgeons use the term "cured" when talking about the diet's effect on…
  • As Smm773 pointed out earlier, when you turn to breathe, turn so that you're looking toward your armpit. As the water sweeps by you, it leaves a pocket of air under your armpit when you lift your arm out of the water. Turn your head so that you can take a quick breath from that pocket of air and then return it to the…
  • I do!
  • Thanks, Panda. I think I'll go for 2.7km (3,000 yards, 60 laps). Maybe not today since I need to get my sprints in. But the more I think about it the more I'm convinced that I really should have two goals - a sprint goal AND a distance goal. I never had a distance goal simply because I never thought I could do distance. I…
  • But... But... Someone will steal my lane!
  • I swim 45-75 minutes a day, 5 days a week, sometimes 6. You need to give your body at least one day off a week, especially in the beginning as you're building strength.
  • I do some but not nearly what I should be. I need to get a stronger core.
  • You're making me want to go back to the pool for a second swim. Thanks for the encouragement!
  • Thanks for your responses. I have to admit, I was quite shocked that I could keep pulling through 50yd laps quite comfortably for such a sustained period of time. When I started swimming again 4 months ago (I hadn't swam laps in about 30 years), 2 laps of freestyle wiped me out and I would have to take a couple of minutes…
  • I highly recommend USMS for anyone who wants to swim, regardless of their skills or fitness level. I finally started using my membership and the resources they provide to members is awesome. I just got back from visiting my folks in Houston and found a USMS swim team to practice with while I was there and it was awesome.…
  • Lol - I know what you mean. The breast stoke is a stroke you can make as easy on yourself or as hard on yourself as you want. Next time, try pulling as hard as you can and put your legs out as far apart as you can before kicking them together for one lap. You'll get winded.
  • Fly. Which is odd for me because I hated it all my life up until recently. I suppose I like it because I can now do it decently. I can actually hear the "whoosh!" sound the water makes when my arms are at the middle of the pull. It's a very powerful feeling stroke. My least favorite is the backstroke because it's my best…
