Map My Walk vs. Map My Run
What's the difference between Map My Walk and Map My Run? The descriptions are the same.

Swim Workouts
Would any of you like to have swim workouts posted daily (or have daily workouts posted weekly)? I would like the opportunity to practice writing workouts for people of all abilities and I could use the feedback from those of you who would like to try them out. If there's enough interest, I'd be happy to start writing up…

Running VO2max of 44? Really??
I'm 45 years old and I've only been running since about late August. About two weeks ago, I got a Garmin Forerunner 920XT w/HRM (and love it, by the way!) and it has calculated my running VO2max at 44 ml/kg/min which puts me in the "Superior" aerobic fitness category. Is this even possible for someone my age who has only…

Increasing 5k Race Pace
Hello! I'm 45 years old and I started running about 3 or 4 months ago. Up until then, I hated running and avoided it at all costs. I never actually planned to start running. I kind of just fell into it after I started walking for exercise and then discovered that running was the fastest way to return home when I would walk…

Garmin Swim Watch
Does anyone have a Garmin Swim Watch? I just got one and I haven't any problems with it counting my laps. My only issue is that it doesn't seem to recognize my butterfly stroke 4 out of 7 times. It think I'm doing freestyle. Does anyone who has this watch know what motions the watch looks at to determine what stroke you…

Why is the recommended sodium intake a constant value?
I don't understand why the RDA for sodium is always the same regardless of exercise. It seems to me that the more you exercise, the more you sweat; the more you sweat, the more sodium you deplete; the more sodium you deplete, the more sodium you need replaced.

1,128 Exercise Reduced to 279?
Can someone tell me why I got ripped off on this? I have my activity level set to sedentary and my weight loss goal set to 1 lb per week (500 calorie deficit). This is my exercise diary entry for Wednesday. I took off the Fitbit during these exercises and only wore it while I did my afternoon walk. Running (jogging), 5 mph…

Setting BMR and/or Percentage of Body Fat?
Is there a way to tell Fitbit what is your BMR or your percentage of body fat? If so, where would I find the setting?

MapMyRun vs. Runtastic
Which is better as far as accuracy? I've only used MapMyRun and it seems to do ok unless I'm running in an above ground parking garage. It seems to think I can run 1 mile every 2 minutes if I'm in a parking garage. But then again, I'm more inclined to believe that's a GPS issue rather than an app issue.

An iOS App that Tracks Food and Links to Fitbit AND MFP?
Is there a fitness app that can pull my food diary off of MFP and then sync it with Fitbit? I'm trying to find a way to keep my Fitbit One unlinked to MFP but still have my food diary show up on Fitbit. I don't want to link my Fitbit directly to MFP because I absolutely hate how the calorie adjustment works but at the same…

My Cholesterol Levels Make No Sense!
Before my sleeve surgery, 9 months ago, my triglycerides were at 199 (high), HDL was at 42 (low), LDL was at 129 (within range), and my total cholesterol was 209 (slightly high). Nine months and 114 lbs later, my triglycerides are at 88 (within range) and my HDL is at 63 (above 46 is good). Both are good news. HOWEVER, my…

60% Effort vs. 75% Effort vs. 80% Effort
I really have a problem perceiving how much effort I put into a swim. I know when I'm doing my slowest (it's the point right before sinking) and I know how to sprint (I can't go any faster), but when it comes to everything in between, I'm at a loss. I know why I'm at a loss - effort doesn't always correlate with output,…

Distance Swimming
I'm not a distance swimmer. I'm a sprinter and know nothing about distance swimming. But today, I did something unusual for me. I was doing my 300yd freestyle warm-up and when I finished my last lap (6th lap), I decided I could do another 2 laps (because I never end on an odd number of laps) and make it 8 laps. Then 8…

Guar Gum to Thicken Sauces w/out Lumps
How do you add guar gum to thicken sauces without getting lumps? I've tried several different methods, and none of them work. 1. I tried adding it after the sauce cooled. It made no difference in lumpiness. 2. I tried adding it to the sauce while it was still hot. Again, it made no difference in lumpiness. 3. I tried…

Best Pace Question
Can someone explain to me why my "best pace" for each of the 100s is different from my time for each 100? I thought that if I swim a 100, my pace would be the time it took me to swim that 100. If I only swim one 100 interval, then wouldn't my time for that one 100 interval be the same as my "best pace" for that interval?

United States Masters Swimming
Well, I think I may have done a stupid thing. I inadvertently joined a swim team by getting a paid membership to the USMS and I am clueless as to how my membership works and too embarrassed to call the local masters swim club to find out. Does anyone have any experience with USMS? All I know is that I'm a member of the…

I think I Need This Book
This is the next book in the Swim Speed series. It covers all of the strokes. Apparently, the Swim Speed books come with waterproof workout cards which is definitely something I've been looking for. Do any of you have one of the other Swim Speed books? I was just wondering how easy they are to follow and how helpful they…

Want to know your swim type?
I thought this site was pretty cool so I'm passing it on. I'm a swinger. I be swingin'! The "poor perception of their technique" description was dead on. Up until now, I never understood why my coach keeps telling me to raise my elbow higher and to move my arms up and not out to the side. I thought I was doing it wrong! If…

Pool Frustrations - Just Venting
I'm visiting my folks in the Houston area for a week and I'm so frustrated with finding a pool in which I feel comfortable swimming. I'm finding it impossible to get an hour of swimming in a day. At the neighborhood pool, kids are constantly jumping in the lap lane. At the YMCA, people who aren't even swimming laps want to…

Is this a good workout?
Is this a good workout for general cardio fitness? I'm trying to improve my cardio fitness without feeling like I'm dying so I mix things up a bit by adding kick intervals after my warmup and before my sprints to give myself a "breather". But I'm wondering if doing kick intervals in the middle of my workout is a bad idea…

Question about increasing cardio endurance
So... all my life I've been told or heard that in order to improve your cardio endurance, you have to raise your heart rate to at least 75% of your max heart rate for 20 minutes straight, 5 days a week and that if you let your heart rate go below the 75%, even for a moment during that 20 minutes, you're wasting your time.…

I don't know about this yoga thing...
I started a yoga class last month. I've been to it four times so far and I'm not sure I can keep going. My problem is that damn downward dog thing. Even the child's pose, which is what I'm suppose to go back to when I need to rest, kills me. The problem I'm having is all the blood rushing to my head, making me feel sick.…

Anyone here doing high protein, low fat/carb?
It seems like everyone who low carbs does the high fat. Is there anyone here who does low carb, low fat, high protein? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Atkins. I did it myself for 16 months. But as of five months ago, my doctor's orders are a low carb, low fat, and high protein diet for me and I was just wondering if anyone…

Butterfly - Like it or Hate It?
I can't decide if I like it or hate it. I know I hated it when I was on the swim team as a kid. I think it looks pretty when I see other people doing it and I admit it feels neat when I do it but damn is it tiring! I finally swam one 50 meter lap of fly the other day for the first time in years and I was inhaling water by…

Question About Skin Flushing
This is probably a stupid question but here it goes. Is it a bad thing to have widespread skin flushing (e.g., on the upper arms, shoulders, and chest) while swimming laps? I know that flushing while exercising is how the body cools down when sweat can't evaporate fast enough to cool you down but my flushing is pretty…
