  • My diet and other lifestyle factors killed my tolerance. I get drunk (and majorly hung over) from a full glass of wine or a quarter shot of whiskey. So yep, I'm more or less a non-drinker now.
  • Honestly this makes me thankful I have food allergies. Once you explain to people you're allergic to gluten and soy, and gluten and soy are in nearly EVERYTHING, no one pushes food at you anymore. Plus, half my office is dieting in some way or another, so me saying 'I'm on a diet' is not a big deal. I don't usually go into…
  • I have a new nickname in my running group. La Flakita (Spanish for little skinny). When I showed up to the group meet yesterday one of the guys looked at me and said, you lost a ton of weight since the last time I saw you. I looked at him. .. dude, that was a week ago. He squinted, thought about it for a minute, and said,…

  • I do all that, I just don't log it on here. My morning routine involves at least 40 pushups. I'll be working more body weight stuff in about a month or so when is going to finally be light enough to start working out in the outdoor gym setups on the beach. As an update, I just ran the fastest mile I ever ran, and then four…
  • @Christine_72 , I was reading somewhere that different spots on the body corresponds to different hormone issues. Stomach and thigh fat is cortisol, arm fat is, I believe, is estrogen. Don't know if it's true though.
  • Belly is melting away, upper arms and back are my stubborn areas!
  • I'm built funny. Size 4 pants, in Express and Limited sizes. Size L shirts. Wide shoulders, big boobs, large upper arms. I'm 5'5, 155-ish lb. I should be 135-125 lb. I also don't run for weight loss, I run for enjoyment and with my social group. So far my running is not impacted by my cut, I've been getting much better.
  • I feel absolutely terrible for those people. They didn't get that way on purpose, and if they listen to the supposed 'authorities' they will only get bigger and less healthy. It's like our society is trying to make Wall-E movie a documentary.
  • Running. Seriously addicted to it. Happy Leap Day!
  • End of the month recap: 1. Avoid food waste/too much eating out - I'm going to call this as good. I stayed away from non-special occasions restaurants. On Saturday I also cleaned out my fridge (our roommate moved out, so I was able to get rid of all the nastiness he had in there and clean the thing until it sparkled and…
  • Hmm. Though that when your body gets more efficient at using ketones less of them get secreted in the urine, so some folks register negative on those keto sticks?
  • Maria Emmerich has some great dairy-free keto recipes. Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but here is the link. http://mariamindbodyhealth.com/ For Paleo, I'd suggest Rob Wolf's or Lorain Cordain's websites.
  • I'd like to just say that this range is also very personal. I'm insulin resistant and carb sensitive, I don't do well at higher levels. I get cravings, hunger, and loss of energy if I eat over 30 total carb, so I think my curve might be a lot shorter and steeper then the one depicted.
  • Only if they're size 4

  • That is wonderful! You should see about getting your heart rate measured, you might be right in that sweet fat-burning zone, plus you're reaping all the benefits of being active and not sitting on your tush.
  • @DorkothyParker , we're talking elite marathon and ultra runners here. Personally, I like endurance running and like the idea of running half marathons every week, so I may be at risk, but as I said... gotta die of something.
  • @moe0303 that's a great NSV! You lost your belly but you'll gain arm and back muscle!

  • Ok, week 4 check-in: 1. Avoid food waste/too much eating out - check. After the pre-planned weekend packed with work/in-laws, I stayed away from restaurants. 2. Get 7 hours of sleep a night - I got 7 hours on Wednesday night, and 7 last night, and I am finally feeling like I am catching up. 3. Drop another 2-3lb before the…
  • @wabmester, from what I understand about athlete's heart, only one side gets enlarged, and as an effect, your heartbeat gets thrown off, which causes serious problems later in their career. I like running, as I mentioned, and you gotta die of something... so I'll take a heart attack while running a marathon, maybe at 120…
  • I am wearing my fat pants today. My fat pants are size 6. They are size 6, you guys! *Happy Dance*

  • @wabmester , what I got from Mark's book is that the damage was to the heart and body as well. Basically according to him, the heart works too hard at a medium pace without proper training, so you get problems that way, as well as the stress on your body from cortisol, carb consumption, and so on. The book is…
  • Mark Sisson's new book actually gives a pretty good explanation - when we are doing steady state cardio, a lot of people are working too hard or not hard enough. There is a fat-burning zone, which occurs at a fairly low heart beat (approximately 220-age), and there is the anaerobic training zone, which you train at a high…
  • I like hearing about science. Science is fun. I wish I didn't get told all my childhood that I am bad at math and should avoid the STEM fields.
  • Bleh. I am still trying to catch up to life from all the craziness from last week. Yesterday was the first night I got a decent amount of sleep (more then 4 hours) in the last week. Stress has been eating me from the inside, and I had a binge episode on Tuesday, so I am fighting cravings, mostly with diet soda. It's also…
  • I'm reading Gary Taubs' Good Calories Bad Calories right now, and he has a load of info about diabetes research and how it was futzed up by 'science'.
  • I want to be you when I grow up.
  • @auntstephie321 lots people think it does, which to me is all kinds of weird just thinking about what diabetes actually is. Doctors actually propagate this nonsense too. The current medical advice for diabetics is to eat whole grains, fruit, and desserts with fake sugar in it.
  • They have recipes for all their food online. Plus ingredients so I know I am not eating crap that will make me sick. But ours don't have a paleo option :-( Word of warning though - went out to a local chain restaurant here the other night. They had food labeled as 'paleo' on their menu. Thank goodness I asked, the spice…
  • I'm listening to it during my hours-long commutes. It's a great book! Oh, and happy birthday, @GaleHawkins
