  • I'm curious why you think that. Not necessarily challenging, but wondering whether there's evidence for that assumption. Obviously, it's very conservative, so it's better to think that way if your intention is to lose weight, but the flip side would also be true. If you're optimizing for training, though, you may be short…
  • This. Plus many machines will sync up with a Polar (not necessarily true with the others). Greg
  • I've taken the classes, but I'm sure it's a lot different workout with Annie, although the right class does come with music: "Staying Alive, Staying Alive... (see, e.g., http://bit.ly/1fvXjw5 for a good Ken Jeong laugh)" How long are your "intervals" before you switch out with someone? Greg
  • OT, but watch the videos on the Concept2 website for form issues, making sure you correctly sequence your legs, arms and body. Then just do a lot of meters, building up the totals, and trying to drive the splits down a second per week. You'll get there. Greg
  • Since nobody else has responded, I'd suggest (as someone who has torn their ACL twice) that you need to find out what's causing your knee to crunch and be sore before anybody (ideally your doctor) can recommend a cardio exercise. I personally use an erg, but that's only after I received clearance from my orthopedic surgeon…
  • I spend a lot of hours on the rowing machine. Almost nobody uses an erg correctly at a gym. Often I've seen PT's advise their clients incorrectly as to the appropriate form for using an erg. People do things that if they do them for longer than a few minutes, they're at significantly higher risk for hurting their backs.…
  • That's just not true. Last weekend I did 60 mins on the erg at an average split of 2:12/500m, on a descending split over the course . Last 500m were at a 1:50 split, just for kicks and giggles. Average HR (by Polar HRM) was 166, high HR (during the last 500m) was 187. Total calories expended were 1305. That overstates it a…
  • First workout with rowing team after 18 months on IR following tears in wrist tendons and separately retearing my ACL/medial meniscus. Sucks to get old. Too cold to go on the water, so ergs in the boathouse. Never been so happy to erg. 3 x 20' steady state row with goal of HR between 145-165, although mine crept up a…
  • 50m on erg (Concept2) - damper setting 4. 30m steady state @ avg pace of 2:05.1, rating 22-23 4m rest 10m - 1m on/1m off: On = rating 10-12, Off = rating 20-22, all at 2:06 pace 4m rest 10m - 1m on/1m off: On= rating 28-30, pace: 1:55 (except for final "on" minute, which was at a 1:45 pace), Off = rating 20-22, pace: 2:08…
