And if the study you posted is correct, exercise can help to limit the effects of adaptive thermogenesis and I can keep eating that candy bar. Yay!
-
Ok, I have been doing the same thing for the past six weeks and so far everything is going as it should :-) I just want to keep it this way in the long run. From the studies and articles that were posted here it seems that exercise can contribute tremendously. So I'll keep exercise high, keep monitoring TDEE and hope for…

Yes, you are right. I think there are several takes on both set point and adaptive thermogenesis. I have read that the reasoning behind the set point theory was adaptive thermogenesis. The body adapts metabolism in order to bring you back to your set point or the other way around because of adapted metabolism you return to…

Then don't call it set point but adaptive thermogenesis :) My impression is that adaptive thermogenesis is accepted as a fact by many scientists.

Funny that you mention that, as I have discovered intermittent fasting to work quite well for me. My original question was aimed at understanding how to lose weight in a way that reduces metabolism the least and therefore makes maintenance easier. Do you know anything about the effects of regular short term fasts on the…

Please explain why it doesn't matter where my caloric intake comes from? The rest of your comment states that it is not a good idea to starve yourself. That is not relevant to the question  Your conclusion uses words like healthy and sustainable. Unfortunately there is no consensus on the meaning of these words...

How do you monitor your TDEE?
-
Several studies seem to have gotten to similar results: I was referring to this article proposing some set point theory: jn.nutrition.org/content/127/9/1875S.full In the conclusion it reads: "Thus, even when weight loss does occur, the resulting adjustments in energy expenditure favor its recovery. Under such…

Thanks for that as well! This is actually part of what I am trying to figure out. In a documentary it was explained that a person who weighs the same and has the same body composition as another person and one has been that weight their entire adult life and the other one dieted down to that weight, the dieter would need…

Well, +r in the lager. You knew what I meant anyway ;-) Thank you so much! This is exactly what I was hoping for. I was hoping that the reduction of BMR was not as simple as some people put it... In the chart I interpret BL to be Base Line and M3/6 are month 3/6? So this does not only mean that the exercising group did not…

Machines, MFP etc. use formulas to calculate the calories burned. These formulas are fairly generic and how much they over/under estimate depends on the formula used. One of these formulas was for example deducted from a study with a few young, male athletes. If you are not a young, male athlete burns calculated from that…

I'm sorry, MrM27, that you don't get paid what you think you deserve. You choose to work while you have no financial benefit from it because it's your nature, you are a 'work horse' as you put it. A lot of people (unfortunately?) are not. You can be mad about people that abuse the system, but in the end you will have a…
-
Ah, that explains it. I guess every system has it's flaws, especially in health care. I doubt that there is anything like a perfect health care system. In every model some motivated individual can find some way to take advantage while someone else might be at a disadvantage... Here you are required to have health insurance…
-
Maybe I'm stupid: But why then would anybody show up at a hospital requiring a longer stay or other expensive care, NOT have health insurance and be in debt for the years to come as was stated above? I'm lost :ohwell:
-
I believe the argument was that people stay in welfare because working does not result in having more money. And if the argument is about people being willing to work if they got paid what they felt they deserved, then why does it matter what anybody else thinks your work is worth? It's about what you think your work is…

So how much does health insurance cost in the US? I understand that health insurance is not mandatory in the US but how does it work if you want it but can't afford it (being a student or being unemployed etc.)?
-
Ok. That is acceptable I guess. Then again, I have no idea how much people earn in SA. Putting prices into perspective is not an easy thing to do ^^

Suggestion: Shorten your quotes to the part you are actually answering to, to keep the thread readable. Just an idea... Very entertaining debate... very entertaining...

Are those US dollar cents? A small bottle of water is really around 6 bucks? Good beer in Germany 0.17 cents/ml. Cheap beer is around 0.06 cents /ml around the same price as bottled water. That is Euro cents.

Oh, and I would be fine with a tax on anything that is supposedly 'bad' for you as long as I could earn a tax relief by exercising or eating healthily most of the time. This way I could 'earn' the bad bad bad stuff much like I already do now: I have done all my exercises and met my macros? Great, than it's ok to have a…

Hahaha. I remember a few years back, when they wanted to raise taxes on beer in Germany. It almost started a revolution. In 2014 out of the 28 states in the EU Germany has the second lowest beer tax. The only country with a lower tax on beer is Bulgaria.... Maybe beer is a necessity in Germany... At least I don't think the…

It doesn't really need to be an expensive food processor though. Any cheap blending thingy will do. Even the hand-helds. I agree that you don't need need tahini. But I like the extra flavor it adds to the hummus. Yum!
-
Good to know. I make hummus myself from canned chickpeas. That is super quick and easy. But sometimes I need something I can grab and go, for these situations I might buy it in the store but I'd much prefer to have my self made hummus ready to go. How do you unfreeze it then?

How does this work? Sound interesting. How many $$ for what kind of goal?

Today is my last day of workout 2. This means I have to start workouts 3&4 and I'm completely scared! I do want to complete the program but I also want to respect my body's limits. I think my body just does not get stronger as fast as the workouts get harder... So what to do? Do another week with the first workouts or move…
