AWEsome. Seriously.

I wanted to be a blueberry picker or a maid, hehe. When I was jr high/high school I wanted to be a vet or a wildlife ecologist. Now I'm an entomologist/microbiologist so I didn't stray too terribly far. I still think I'd enjoy picking blueberries for a living though.

Oh thats tough! If I were you I'd google reviews of the timex and try to find out whether other people found it to be accurate or not. Its really going to be impossible to tell how accurate it is unless you compare it to another HRM. 350 cals does sound high for the shred but not too crazy a number, especially if your…

Hey! I have some of the cheapo plastic ones and they're super easy. The chart I have for them is for abdominal fat only so its definitely easy to do myself.

I would most definitely recommend running a couple of half marathons first so you know what you're in for. That said, I like Hal Higdon and have used his schedules to train for halves but make sure you incorporate strength training in there somewhere as well. Hal doesn't really emphasize it much in his schedules but its…

People say stupid crap. You get to choose whether or not it bothers you. Running is such an individual thing, for some people a 40 minute 5k is an awesome accomplishment, for some people a 20 minute 5k still wouldn't be a PR. Its easy to forget that sometimes and say something stupid. Recent personal examples: I ran a half…

I'm about 5'7 and 167 lbs (which in my mind is roughly equivalent to your size) and I burn around 100 cals/mile on just about anything 5 miles and under on pavement. Slightly less on a treadmill. Probably more on trails but I'm never positive about the distance so don't quote me. If you don't have a HRM and want to be…

bump I'm in the same boat, thinking ahead to next summer.

Borrowed from AZtrailrunner: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/322021-help-with-your-shin-splints ^really helpful And how fast I run depends on how far I'm going and what I'm trying to make my body do.

Seconded

When you're excited to run after a good rain b/c you're less likely to get run over by a mountain biker.

That's a big part of how I got fat in the first place. I struggle with it less now, partly due to circumstances but partly because I've really made an effort to keep healthy foods that I WANT to eat around all the time and almost never have things I know I can't control myself around in the house. Even if it means going…

What are your goals? Is running going to continue to be just a warm-up or are you planning on shooting for a particular distance? If its the former then you can play with the speed if that trips your trigger. If its the latter its a better use of your time to work on running further in some structured way (find a training…

^ditto! You won't keep muscle (let alone build any) if you have too big a deficit.

I strength train to make sure I don't hurt myself doing the cardio.

Thats great to know, thanks!!

Thanks!! I've used Hal for every race I've done up to this point. You were comfortable doing 26 miles after maxing out at only 20 miles training though? That part scares me a little...

Thanks!! You mentioned temp- thats exactly why I want to do this one rather than waiting. I just moved to a MUCH warmer climate than I've ever lived in and I know I will have a much harder time training in the summers here. I'll also look into how flat the course is, I have no idea, thats a good point.

Face pics! 200ish? Not sure: 175ish:

Hiya! I started around 225 and I'm currently 168. All my "after" pics are when I was about 175. I'm 5'7 for reference. 225: 175: This took me almost a year and a half of pretty focused effort so far. I lost 25-30 lbs on my own by eating better (less stress eating mostly) and walking more. After that I really upped the ante…

Show them a BMI chart. Most people trust BMI #'s.

I completely agree with your post but I don't know if I entirely trust the sincerity of the people running this site when they say they are supportive of the community and then instruct mods to tear down every thread where the OP even mentions LGBT support. Yeah they're supposedly locked to prevent bullying, (holy don't…

Hiya! I'm closer to 5'7 but I started at ~225: Down to 175ish: I'm at 168 now but don't have a more recent pic. Its doable!! It just takes awhile. I've been at it a year.

Good question! I think those body media things do that? MFP guestimates based on what you tell it your activity level is, but thats obviously a really rough estimate.

yep.
