Finally added a pic taken this morning (~348 lbs) to illustrate my initial post. Not sure it will alter any of the advice given so far, but just in case. Good lord, I cannot believe I allowed myself to become like this. And how powerful denial can be. A month ago if you had asked me if I was obese, I would have said no…

Aaaahhh seeing all those double chins vanish is making my heart sing with hope! That's what got to me the most on the horrible thanksgiving pic that made me join MFP. Fantastic job, everyone.

Lol. Just. "You can do this! All you need is to be perfect at it."

Make the irresistible good harder to reach.

Yup, this is what I've read as well though I can't vouch for the 20pct figure. I plan to compensate by building a **** ton of muscle mass... I have also accepted that this is a lifestylechange and that I will always exercise. And that's a good thing. I'm nowhere close to being there yet, but I think the key to sustaining…

Indeed it's not. But I'll ignore the rank condescension lest this thread be derailed. Back to discussing PF. Thanks!
-
I would hope not. Why would it be? What an odd thing to say.

How about the built in HRMs that sense thru the handles, are they accurate for measuring heart rate at least?

Went for a bit last year and was flabbergasted by the pizza thing. Ingenious, really. Anyway I was fine on the elliptical for a bit. Then I tried biking and found that I couldn't comfortably fit on any of the bikes. And there were no other options for cardio (eg, stairs, rowing, etc). Yet it was a huge space. Then later…

Thanks. Yeah I plan to go to a speciality store but its always good to do one' s homework online first. Is there much point in going to a doctor/podiatrist?

Please. You are weirdly fetishizing the non-existing complexity of compound work. I've lifted on and off for years. It's reeeally not that difficult. In fact, I think the opposite is true: that compound work is actually best for newbies, and that they should start right away. I hope none are put off by the above!

Prioritize. This shouldn't even be an issue. No grad program is so grueling that setting aside an hour a day or three a hours a week would be so difficult. I know quite a few full-time grad students who run nearly every day. Some trained for anything from 5Ks to marathons while in school. There are many more who find…

Thanks, this is great, but what does "per lean body mass" mean? That phrase needs a unit of mass to make sense. Might you mean "per pound of lean body mass"? You did say not pounds, so I'm not sure. Not being pedantic, just confused. I appreciate the help.

One more question: As long as I keep the total within my calorie limits, is there anything wrong with getting the extra protein from whey protein supplements?

I am not AT ALL a vegetarian or a vegan. I see NOTHING wrong whatsoever with human consumption of animals. Finally, I don't subscribe to ANY of the dietary fads that seem to take this country by storm every so often. All that said, research is consistently showing that regular consumption of red meat is linked with a broad…

That's how I got started and found this site! About a month ago I began googling the nutritional facts for everything, in search of low calorie density food. MFP data was always near or at the top of the results. Eventually I began reading the forums and found out about the calculator. Huge congrats to you.

LOL @ pooping bricks. Yeah we don't want that. Great replies, thanks guys. Off to find a good weight-lifting routine. Right now Stronglift 5x5 is looking good and seems rather simple. Haven't done any substantial lifting in years. I miss it!

No advice for you, just my sympathies because I can relate. I finally got over my worries about a bad ankle (I can still feel some pain from when I twisted it more than a year ago) and began walking/running on a treadmill recently. I lasted 4 days before I got this horrible bunions (or whatever the FFFF else) inflammation…

For real. Yes. We are all like that. Anyone who seeks to attribute some bad experience to ALL men/women seriously needs to grow up. It's a facile excuse to justify an ugly attitude in the future.

Right up there as far as first world problems go. How does that even happen? How does one grow to hate something as basic, vital and ubiquitous as... water?

TL;DR: Some bro who has been chasing her close girl friend for ages began complimenting OP on her recent progress in a manner that suggested romantic interest, while asking her to keep his compliments from her friend. I hope I am not piling up on OP (I expressed some mild disapproval her response earlier), I just think…

Lol. I thought I was the only one with the picture thing. I happened to me on Thanksgiving. At that point, there was no escaping reality. The funny thing is that everyone else in the picture looked like how I saw them in real life. So it stood to reason that what was in the picture was how everyone else saw ME. Awful.
-
Neither you nor your friend have any interest in this guy. And it looks like he is a mere acquaintance to you. So I found the elaborate lecture quite unnecessary. Instead, a simple, more direct reply would have sufficed: "Look, I appreciate the compliment, but let's not cross the line here. Thanks!" -- Done. The whole…

Bunion flared up, shortening my workout yesterday and keeping me out of the gym today and (probably) tomorrow, just as I am getting into the groove of establishing a morning cardio routine. I'm on the roll right now so this forced pause makes me feel like I will have to start over when I go back. Ugh.

Don't "a LOT loser" clothes necessarily mean that there was "much difference in measurement"? ;-)
-
Yeah hopefully I don't start singing a different tune when I start lifting in a week or two (which I have done sporadically over the years for months at a time). I will admit that the prospect of resuming *that* doesn't fill me with enthusiasm. But that too must be done to get the body I want.

A lot. Much more than 8 glasses a day so I don't bother tracking it. "I don't like water" is one of the strangest notions I've ever encountered. To me, it sounds every bit as strange as "I don't like breathing." Obviously breathing is not optional, but it's similar in that, like drinking water, it's something I do without…

Down 1 lb since yesterday morning, despite a massive dinner that weighed much more than that (granted I did uh, expel quite a bit of it this morning. Sorry TMI). I also did as much cardio as I could yesterday (which is about 1/2 hour tops right now...). Also, I am pretty sure that the consequences of one big dinner don't…

It's 730 am here, heading there now.

It's been a long time coming (put in some half assed efforts last summer) but the real kicker was finding this article amazing article a couple of weeks ago: Why Obesity Is Not Your Doctor's Problem http://www.themonthly.com.au/issue/2013/march/1361848247/karen-hitchcock/fat-city The funny thing is that I never saw myself…
