I started a year ago with the free app C25K and then followed up with the C210K. (Now I am training for a full marathon and I ran a couple of halfs) Using the app takes the guess work out as it tells you when to run/walk and when to have a rest day. You do not have to start at the beginning but you can jump into let's say…

Vary your speed. You can set yourself little goals, by walking as fast as you can for a minute and then walk normally for the next. Try to increase the amount of time you walk as fast as you can. After a couple of weeks you can try running half a minute and then walk. Eventually you can download the free app C25K to your…

Brilliant! Congrats!

I admire you running it without a watch. I need mine and would despair without it! I do check my heart rate regularly to make sure I am not going out to fast. It iss very easy to get caught up in running too fast when with other runner, at least it is for me. Best of luck! I assume you race is today? Stef.

Yes, I do rotate, but that was the original question whether it is beneficial or not. The more I read on the Internet the more I believe it is good for the legs. I am so used to the asics that I hardly feel the bulkiness and...I have not been running for that long so for me finishing is my goal, not racing.

There are quite a few articles out there that are talking specifically about different styles of shoes and the benefit of it, here is just one: http://www.runnersworld.com/race-training/is-it-necessary-to-rotate-running-shoes Stef.

That's what I was referring to. Makes sense to me. Stef.
-
Now this is encouraging! I am also lazy, just hope it hurts less than running fast.
-
Thanks for the warning and I have just started training for one...

This is was I was referring to re rotating shoes. It is inconclusive, but makes some sense to me: http://runnersconnect.net/running-injury-prevention/shoe-rotation-reduce-running-injuries/

Curt, this is what I think I remember that I have read somewhere. Apparently as every shoe is different it forces your foot to adjust and trains some muscles you might not train if running in the same shoe style all the time. I am not sure whether this helps for performance but it might help to prevent injuries. I believe…

STrooper, yes I agree. Some people have told me a full marathon is not double a half but feels like triple a half. I have no idea how it feels to run more than a half distance, but hope to find out when upping my miles slowly. Iporter, I understand that rest days are very important for your training and yes, it does not…

Thanks for your input, very much appreciated! I need to digest the information a bit. At the moment I am following my own, completely unstructured plan (bad idea) just to up my mileage. I also try to follow loosely the 80/20 rule. At some point I need to look at a more structured approach should I really want to face my…

I am not qualified to give you any advice, but just want to wish you luck! I am very happy to hear that you have proven the doctors to be wrong! Stef.

Thanks Kristine!

Thanks for all your input! Very much appreciated. I did use the Nike Free now for a couple of 5 km very slow runs and had no pain whatsoever. I like the feel of a lighter shoe, but than...my Asics have served me very well. I do not want to transition to more minimalist shoes but thought perhaps it is good for training some…

Thanks Kristine for your input. I assume though that you have been longing much longer than I have (10 months)? I will play it by ear and make sure that I do get a rest day at least every ten days or if I feel like it. Stef.
-
Thanks Carson, makes sense.
-
Thanks for your input. Having some rest makes sense for recovery. It just means you have to run more on the remaining days if you want to keep up your mileage. I need to find a training plan that suits me. At the moment I do my own "plan" incorporating long runs, speed work and hill workouts. Stef.

Polar Beat app with Polar HRM?
-
Why not give the C25K a try? It involves quite a bit of walking. You could do the running part very slowly and repeat days if necessary? This is how I got into running and no injuries. Best of luck! Stef.

Congrats on finishing it!

Normally around 20000, I have dogs that need one long walk per day. I also run, so today I clocked 40k.
-
I use Asics Gel Nimbus 16 and each time I find them for a good price I buy a pair. I stick with them as they seem to be perfect for me. Originally I got them fitted and it works.

Fitbit...are pedometers and help zero with biking. Get either Garmin or Polar multisportswatches with HRM to measure your activity.
-
I have two soft coated Wheaten Terriers and walk them between 6 and 10km daily.
-
I sometimes eat and sometimes not before cardio. Depends on how hungry I am. Makes no difference to me.
-
I walk my dogs every day for somewhere between 6-10km (one walk) and yes I do log it the same way as I log all my sports activities. I do not log my other daily walking though.

Lovely story!

Can't you just walk around with both devices and count your steps and then compare? You could do 200 steps by counting them and then compare?
