Jeepers - she doesn't need to "want to fail" here..... Plenty of people have gone from couch to marathon in a year. It's not all that rare, and it's fairly easy to find testimonials from those that have done it, blog posts, etc. So it's not a crazy goal at all, and you don't need to have mental health problems to think…

It's totally normal for one of the long runs to go terribly. You'll nail the next one, and all will be well.
-
Agreed!
-
I skimmed this a bit..... but I'd give you, or anyone, about a 30% chance of being able to go from couch to marathon in a year. I'd give anyone about a 75% chance of going from couch to marathon in 18 months. Now, couch to marathon in TWO years? Heck yes. Absofreakinglutely yes. And it will be fun, too. You can have an…

Either run the 20 miler tonight, or just follow your plan without it. It will be fine.
-
You know, these suggestions about percentage of your mileage.... consider it a starting point, really, and you're going to have to find a way to make distance running work for you. Over time, putting in more mileage during the "shorter" runs will tend to make you drastically faster, even on long run day. But only if you…

Glad you are okay! Yes, absolutely follow up with this. You don't know what's going on in the owner's head.... but this could be a wake up call for them. There is a dog on my street that attacked me several times. One time, she got out when the high school football team was selling some fundraiser stuff. The entire…

You're female? Sorry to say this, but despite how many calories it burns, running makes me gain weight. I'm so freaking hungry all the time. I'm here on My Fitness Pal in the first place because, after four years of ultrarunning, I had gained 12 lbs and couldn't get them off. I wanted to start tracking calories so that I…

This is why I hate 5ks. Yep. Go as fast as you can until you start to feel like you're going to be sick at both ends, and that's when you slow up. Edit to add.... Congratulations! Your post saying the race had happened didn't load for me initially. Well done!
-
Nope, no runner's high for me.... Actually, if anything, if I go into an altered state of consciousness, it's a good clue for me that I need to get some calories down fast. I've had a floaty, woozy feeling right before my blood sugar has crashed. Not good. I blacked out at the finish line of a marathon once after a couple…

I've only been here for a few months... but it seems like most of the traffic here comes from people running half marathons or longer. I tried to search groups for an active forum for people that preferred shorter distances, and didn't have much luck. Most that I came up with were inactive. But ask a question if you have…

How does it have any idea what you're burning?
-
Well, this is along the lines of what I was thinking..... If I eat a 200 calorie deficit, do I even touch the fat in the first place? Or is my body just saying, "Oh, 200 calories? We got this. Let's just burn some of ALL THAT GLYCOGEN you forced us to store, mobilize, store, mobilize....." The thing is? Before it bumps…

Glad you made it to lab! Another college professor here.... So, in the future.... Labs are hard to make up. When a student needs to make up a lab, that's typically 8 hours of additional work out of myself, our prep person, and the TA to make that happen. There's a such thing as being too sick to make it to lab, but if you…

Not exactly, but I don't want to have to buy all new clothes. My weight had hit that tipping point in December.

I have a funny story about a motorist! I swore the van was ACTUALLY trying to hit me - it's like, I looked the guy in the eye and he gunned it. I jumped and screamed and got out of the way. I was certain it was on purpose! So when he pulled out, I snapped a picture of the license plate and texted it to my husband. At which…

You need to go see your doctor about this. This could be caused by some serious things like MS, thyroid problems, and diabetes. You'd hate to fart around for a year switching shoes and then find out you should have been getting medical attention.
-
Also keeps them dry. You might think that if there's no rain forecast, your clothes will DEFINITELY stay dry. They will right up until some clumsy person tries to refill their hydration bladder on top of your drop bag. That didn't happen to me, but I saw it happen to somebody else!
-
I usually consider the clothing in my drop bag to be a near-game day decision based on weather. I try to avoid the kitchen sink approach and bring only what I really need. I ran the Beast of Burden winter 50 (in Buffalo. In January. Yeah, it was cold). I had two drop bags and each drop bag had a pair of snowpants and a…

Good luck! You're going to do great! Yes! You're there to run, not play in your drop bag. So don't put a lot of stuff in there. Or you'll play in your drop bag rather than run because you'll be kind of tired. Here's how I avoid playing in my drop bag: 1) I put the clothes in a ziplock bag and BURY THEM in the bottom of the…

Personally, I pick ultras based more on my interest in the course and the timing rather than the distance. Is there another course that sounds appealing to you? Triathlon could be fun - have you ever done it? I didn't enjoy my brief time in triathlon. I couldn't escape being hard-sold on training programs and open water…

CONGRATULATIONS!
-
That was seriously funny!
-
WOW! That's awesome! Not sure what you mean by usual run - I'd say a 6 mile run would be fine for sunday, but after that, start lazing around. Two miles? Three miles?
-
Yeah - my cutoffs are nine miles in winter and over six in the summer. OR dehydrated going in. I've had that happen before.
-
Oh yes! Agreed that hyponatremia is a WAY bigger issue than dehydration. Though I know people that have been pulled from a race due to honest-to-goodness dehydration. But in those cases, it was again what happened the day BEFORE the race, not day of. In one case, the person was getting over a GI infection. Apparently, the…

On another note..... My husband also liked when we had the >26.2 bumper sticker on the car. He used to like to pass people on the highway that had a 26.2 bumper sticker. It amused him. Another time, we were at an orchard picking apples in truly horrendous weather. (44, raining, windy). So there weren't many people there,…

As others have said, yeah, you were probably dehydrated.... but that's unlikely to be the cause of your difficulty. Did you get a headache? Were you insanely thirsty? When you got to the finish line, were you all, "OMG! WATER GIVE ME MOAR PLEEEZE!" Did you go through a phase where you just wanted to camp at an aid station,…
-
Okay, but.... there's a practical reason to have a sticker on your car. It's getting to races and meeting your friends for a run. Before it got totaled, I had one of ultrarunnerpodcast's ">26.2" stickers on my car. I was on my way to a race, and missed the turn off. The car behind me FOLLOWED ME a quarter of a mile…

FWIW, even the top female ultrarunners tend to have slightly higher BMIs than marathoners or track runners.
