I wouldn't consider the 30 DS to be a steady state cardio exercise so even if you were using a HRM your readings are not going to be accurate.

I am in the same boat as you, my Polar reads nearly identical to or slightly higher than what my fitness pal has when I am running or using the elliptical.

The elliptical all the way for me. Whether it's a treadmill or running out side, the impact causes my old knee injury to flare up in no time flat. Where with the elliptical I can go for as long as I feel like.
