  • Congrats on the obviously significant reduction! It's an awesome feeling, great way to see your progress, and a pick me on bad days isn't it? I have been doing the same thing. Does anyone give you grief about needing to get a new belt? (I do)
  • Thank you for the response, as well as everyone else. I think this would probably be very doable for me. Once I got to where I was running upper 40's per week, I just felt too tired to continue picking heavy things up and putting them back down. Should I consider doing speed work during this period as well? I, too, am not…
  • Great advice right there! Run your own race (Don't worry about what others are doing, focus on running the race as you planned to.).
  • I think a C25K program could be very helpful in increasing your stamina and pace. I'd strongly suggest focusing on the stamina aspect of things and letting the gains in pace come as a result in increased stamina though. A lot of people who have the intent on improving both at the same time wind up with an injury. When you…
  • I'm half guilty on #4. I've been loosing weight, but I haven't really been eating the most healthy items/meals.
  • I try to go to they gym at around 2 or 3 pm. The gym is fairly empty as the lunch time crowd has left, I can find a parking spot instead of parking a 1/4 mile or more away, I can find a locker, and people who normally use the gym in the evening are arriving just as I am leaving.
  • I'd recommend adding distance/time on feet before worrying about speed. A lot of times trying to increase speed and distance at the same time will result in some type of injury. Generally speaking, most people will see an increase in speed when they just run more miles/time. I worked up to running 4-5 miles before working…
  • I have this issue as well. I just try to keep unhealthy ready-to-eat snacks out of the house to avoid it. Cravings normally hit me the hardest during the time I would normally be running.
  • I'm training for my first Marathon, Prairie Fire Marathon in Wichita KS on October 12. My longest run, to date, is 20 miles. I knew training was going to be more difficult than that for the Half, but boy it's much tougher than I thought. I knew training in the summer heat was going to be a challenge (At least it hasn't…
  • I go commando with shorts with a liner/built in brief (prevents chafing!). If I'm just wearing gym shorts, then it's a pair of compression briefs.
  • I am following a modified plan, and I honestly can't recall where/whose it is. The original plan calls for 6, 8, 6 for mid week runs, and I am going to go ahead and go with that. I changed the mileage to 10,12,10 based on advice from others. I think the advice was given to try to help, but is a little ambitious (Many have…
  • Thanks Stan! I've been reading about this topic a lot, lately. I think the only thing I can really do a little better is making sure I am taking in plenty of water throughout the day, not just during my run......as well as slowing down (Which I have been doing, but it's difficult to do.).
  • I'm not offended at all when someone says that to me. I find it to give me a boost for the exact reasons you said. "Hey somebody noticed I'm putting in a great effort! I may not be in the same condition as them (They're faster than me) but they were able to recognize the effort I am putting forth in my run. Perhaps I have…
  • To add to this, it also takes time (I believe 3-4 weeks) for results from training to be noticed.
  • Hal Higdons plans were a great place for me start.
  • Lime ade Honey stingers are my go to. I'm about to try out some of the other flavors though.
  • Try doing some light and gentle effort workouts (such as easy cycling) for a short period of time in addition to what you are doing. It should help to "flush" the lactic acid build up. It may hurt at first, but the pain will subside and should aid in recovery (Keep it at a relatively easy effort though.). This issue should…
  • Heed this advice. It sounds like you are trying to build mileage too quickly, as well as going at too fast of a pace. Doing one increases your chance of an injury, doing both is asking for an injury. Do a search for the thread "So you want to start running". It has a lot of great advice.
  • Congratulations on a pr, and a great run! Don't worry if others may, or may not be faster than you, especially on your first races for a distance. Those are setting a baseline and should also be about enjoying the run you've worked so hard to get to (Your time was pretty good, I'd imagine you were probably mid pack in your…
  • I set a pr today at the Prairie Fire Half Marathon in Wichita, Ks on 5-4-14. It was also my first half. My time was 1:57:40, 2:20 faster than my goal of 2:00 and a little faster than predicted by McMillan :). Now on to training for the full in October.
  • When I went for a walk this morning, I noticed my shadow and something was missing. I no longer noticed my belly in my shadow ( I actually turned several different ways to see if it was just the angle.).
  • Awesome. I almost spat out my drink when the "Old Geezer" ran by the women. Here's another Youtube vid............... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsMw10KVVCk&list=RDnGojEyYBmwc
  • I think even Chuck Norris is in awe of her.
  • Yeah, but by the time I reach them I've spent all of my spending money on running shoes! I will have a nice, carbon forked road bike........It may be a few years but it shall be mine.
  • #3 is tough for me. I finally implemented even effort on my long run last week, and it turned out to be an awesome run. I slowed ~20 sec/mile heading into the 25 mph winds, but I wasn't exhausted come mile 12.
  • This is what I was going to suggest. Even though your cardiovascular system may be able to handle the running, your muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and bones are not (It just takes our bodies longer to adapt these for running.). When you over tax these systems too much through doing too much, too soon you will wind up…
  • I try to foam roll every day for about 20 minutes. I focus on my quads and IT bands when doing so. It has made a huge difference in how my knees feel. One tip which has helped to make it more effective is to stop at points where it is particularly tight/painful and move your foot by means of bending your knee back and…
  • When I was able to run my first mile without stopping or feeling out of breath. I had never, in my life, done that before. I had noticeably improved at something I put a lot of effort into. I still get great feelings of accomplishment when I reach a new longest distance or a new pr for a given race.
  • Nobody in this world truly has to do anything except for eat, drink, and breath to live and eventually die. That's all which is required. Everything else is a choice. I don't have to go to the gym, nor run (Which I find enjoyable) but I choose to do so. My options are: 1: Not work out, continue to gain weight and become…
  • Sine I have started my efforts to loose weight, `18 months ago, I have lost 50 lbs. Since I joined MFP about 100 days ago, 26 lbs.
