  • It's very possible that drinking diet drinks causes your body to expect an influx of sugar (due to the taste), then causes a drop in blood sugar as the body tries to compensate for the influx, but because there isn't anything coming in, the body crashes, gets very hungry and causes over-eating later on. If you don't drink…
  • Fairly shocking that the RNA isn't degraded in the digestion if this is true. Is it present at a high enough concentration to elicit changes in human cells? Article doesn't make it clear! It sounds plausible, but I'd be concerned about how it's feasibly possible to eat RNAs and keep them intact all the way to the…
  • Oh, and of course:
  • I love "flippases" and "floppases" which flip lipid molecules in biological membranes (flippase turns them one way and floppase turns them the other way). There are also "scramblases" which can do either direction! Geneticists are ridiculous too, naming genes "fruitless", "dumpy", "sonic hedgehog" etc. (usually in…
  • Haha, no I started the group :P Hope you come back to it with renewed strength! From what I've gathered so far, classes are definitely the better option because they teach you how to use the pole safely, rather than a way of developing injuries. You should also see if there's a lone pole dance teacher around who'd be…
  • Regarding genetic mapping of DNA - probably going to start becoming more mainstream soon. Coming close to a "$1000 genome" in half an hour to sequence your entire genome, which would obviously reveal everything. Only problem is people may get some not-so-nice surprises e.g. BCRA1/2 mutants, Huntington's disease etc. which…
  • I'm currently just starting to attempt to do tucked inverts from today. Can't lean back very far yet. I'll just keep pushing at it until I make a bit of progress :) (carefully of course) - trying not to jump!
  • Nice! Hi, I'm Helen. I created the group, but have only been pole dancing since August (so... 3-4 months?) and I'm yet to invert :) I've recently been getting more definition in my arms and abs through pole dancing alone. I've just got my own pole and am loving it. How long did it take you to achieve a level of mastery on…
  • Join my pole dancing group! Search for it - sorry am on my phone :) Don't get the Starpole. Stick to x-poles or (higher quality and free standing) r-poles. I'm a pole dancer (mid-beginner) and certainly not a stripper (I'm actually asexual, and I don't see pole dance as a sexy thing, though my style would be considered…
  • Have you been contacting just businesses, or looked into contacting academic institutions as well?
  • 1. It could be either. The data given wouldn't distinguish between the two. However, pleiotropic effects (one gene producing a marked change in two (unrelated) traits in an organism) are relatively rare in organisms generally. Still may occur - not sure anyone knows much about the developmental pathways of these organisms.…
  • *high five*
  • Woah, closer than the moon! Amazing. Jupiter isn't doing its job of being the solar system hoover today.
  • Hi everyone! Lovely to see so many members already :D I'm a biochemist undergraduate who just got back from noddy undergraduate lab practicals and has meaningful results. Yay! So what do you look at in the field? :) I guess I was working with "bugs" today. ;) Standard stuff: messing around with the lac repressor in E. coli.
  • I've read several scientific reviews which suggest the same. Only thing is, they didn't seem to quantify how much overweight you have to be to get a significant effect - but the effect appeared to be 100-200 calories less, or equivalent to about 1 lb/month gain if you eat too much. The scientific reviews don't end there…
  • "I'm not racist, but" + racist comment. Should definitely start a counter movement by following it with a non-racist sentence ending. "I'm not racist, but I don't like the taste of diet coke." That's consistency.
  • It'll be a let down. Half way through eating it you'll think, "Actually, this isn't as great as I remember them to be. In fact it's not worth the calories." There's ALWAYS an anti-climax...
  • Thank you everyone! So useful! One last question: usually there's a limit for cardio machines - 30 mins I gather. If I wanted to go longer than that, is it OK if there are other cardio machines available for people to use, or can I leave the machine for 5 mins - and if nobody's used it - hop on and continue? Thanks :D
  • I am in. Running's going to be difficult as I've just started university, this may keep up my motivation! I hope it works! I'll set up my ticker when I'm back at my computer :D
  • I hope you manage to run the whole way! It's just a case of not starting out too fast (unlike me) and keeping up your motivation. Keep practising long run stretches and try not to do anything new on race day (it should be just like rehearsals!). I know you're not so sure about a half marathon, but as 5Ks become "easy" and…
  • If you got that from MFP, sounds like you've entered a dodgy weight when you last measured your weight.
  • 10mph pace!? That's so fast, wow! Congratulations. I don't think I could sprint at that speed for even 20 seconds - legs too short :(
  • If your heart rate was bouncing up to the 180s occasionally, I'd err on the side of something being quite wrong with your HRM. Mine definitely doesn't do that - never records a ridiculous reading (Polar FT40). Pretty certain the fault is with your monitor and not your heart. Not sure what to suggest because I don't know…
  • Definitely all muscle? Tense your arm and then grab all the flabby bits. That's fat, which will go as you lose weight. Never thought I'd say this, but I hope it's more fat than muscle for you!
  • Look at the reduction in your stomach! Very noticeable. Keep up the motivation 'cos you're doing great :)
  • Certainly not fat. Can't quite picture it in my head, but that seems quite a small clothing size for someone that tall. They're probably a normal weight, but appear on the slender side.
  • Check my latest blog post on anxiety. It's more of a long-term thing, but I hope it helps offer perspective. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/helenium I suffer too. *hugs*
