  • Week 5 - My husband got hit in the face with a baseball last week-end and was seriously injured. He's already had one eye surgery and will have another one this week-end. Obviously, losing weight is not at the top of our priority list right now, but he's been pretty much sticking to plan (except for some frozen chocolate…
  • Sometimes disconnecting and reconnecting the app in MFP works, but not always.
  • This happened to me yesterday. After doing zumba and walking 2 1/2 miles, MFP actually gave me fewer exercise calories than I had from the beginning of the day. I ended up manually entering the exercise calories from my Fitbit dashboard. It seems to be OK today.

  • Mine is working OK today, but yesterday I ended up adding the exercise calories the fitbit gave me manually.
  • This just happened to me. In fact, I had earned over 1500 for the day according to Fitbit, and MFP just adjusted me to about 1200 and took away 300 exercise calories I had earned over the day.
  • Week 3 - husband has lost 4 more pounds and says he "feels lighter." So far, 13 lb. total for 3 weeks on this program. We also ate out twice and he was able to stick to plan, except for a small piece of cheesecake for my son's birthday. He also told me for the first time what his starting weight was, which he said he had…
  • No, I only do Phase 1 when we are eating meals together. However, he worked from home most days this week, so I was doing Phase 1 until yesterday when I had a faculty meeting with a catered lunch. Also, we went out last night for Brazilian Radizio for my son's birthday (radizio is basically unlimited piles of prime cuts of…
  • Just read the two posts above. Thanks, Zoodocgirl, for relating your experiences, which echo ours. The recipes are excellent. We just had the gluten free pancakes this morning with whipped cream. We looked at our plates and thought, wow, this is a diet? We eat really big breakfasts, which cuts back on the cravings during…
  • My fitbit isn't syncing with MFP today. It recorded my walk this morning, but I have 92 minutes of activity and MFP hasn't updated with the calories.

  • The TDEE for a sedentary person of 19 who is 108 lbs. is 1497 calories. If she's eating below that, she's probably losing muscle. I'm not going to get on the bandwagon of telling her that 108 lbs. is "too much" for her frame.
  • Not for someone that young. Those are maintenance calories for an older person -- I'm over 55 and maintaining on more than that. She may be "skinny fat" -- reducing calories to such a level that she's losing muscle tone and mass. I also advocate strength training, pilates, yoga to increase lean muscle mass. Someone who is…
  • We did that about 5 years ago and included a long-term care insurance rider. It's unbelievably expensive, but a "whole life" plan with cash value. One of the "Carrot and stick" motivators is that if his weight and A1C drop, our premiums will go down. I thought buying this insurance would help me "let go" of his eating and…
  • Week 2 - spouse lost 4 lbs. this week. I lost one, even though I'm eating low carb only 2 meals a day (when he's around). That was a surprise because I'm breaking a yearlong plateau of not being able to get below 120 lbs.
  • The only time my Fitbit HR calculated steps while "driving" was when we were on off-road jeep tour in Arizona and got jounced around quite a bit. Otherwise, this has never happened to me. However, I wear mine on my non-dominant hand. Perhaps you can try that.
  • Latest update -- spouse lost 5 lbs. in a week. I lost zero. Of course, I'm eating the same calories, just different macros. So for me CICO is probably still the route; for him, low carb is definitely working, although there may be some CICO going on because there are a lot of foods he's not eating at work, such as…
  • @rosebette you like those of us who are living in nutritional ketosis will do just fine. As you can tell at your house it varies from person to person. Be careful about acting on advice from social media especially if they have never done what you and your husband is doing. My first six weeks I do not lose even 1 pound but…
  • No, I haven't cut out caffeine. Ludwig says 2 cups of coffee a day are fine, and that's about what I have. If we had to give up coffee, my husband would never stick to the plan, as he's a major caffeine junkie. I have started feeling a bit better since I've increased potassium and salt. Still, I'm looking forward to Phase…
  • Actually, after Week 2, more carbs are allowed, so it does get easier. The initial 2 weeks are supposed to help eliminate cravings and "jump start" weight loss. In my husband's case, it's definitely working. In my case, not so much. I don't have the extreme cravings and hunger he has, and I'm also not losing any weight…
  • I think you misunderstood -- it's the self-sacrificing Catholic that is giving up the carbs (remember Lent)! I'm not a Catholic anymore, but an Episcopalian -- those are the folks, who on my first "Lenten retreat", introduced me to an "open bar" and a table of or d'ouevres before eating a 3-course meal.
  • Must be the re-covering ex-Catholic in me. Anyway, he's not suffering at all. He feels great. This happened with South Beach about 6 years ago. Because he's a diabetic, going low-carb really benefits his overall feeling of health and well-being. Yesterday, he passed up cookies at work because he was too full to eat them.…
  • I hope you're being sarcastic!
  • Regarding supplements, most over the counter supplements have only 3 g of potassium, which is less than what is in a banana. I think I'd have to be taking a lot of those tablets to OD on them! I've been taking one in the morning and one in the evening, plus one 300 mg of magnesium citrate in the morning. The muscle aches…
  • I guess that's why my husband who is diabetic and insulin resistant is faring better than I am. I feel as if I'm in a brain fog. I haven't lost any weight yet, either, but I'm also tracking, and I'm still eating the same number of calories, just distributed differently.
  • Thanks for all the advice. I took an extra potassium capsule this morning and a magnesium citrate. I also broke down and had a glass of orange juice. I know it's a no-no on low carb, but I'm really suffering. The weird thing is my husband initially resisted the diet and is doing great, but I'm having a hard time. However,…
  • Day 4 of program -- husband is full and satisfied with meals and passed up the pizza at work. I'm getting severe headaches and leg cramps that are waking me up at night from the lower carbs (I've started another thread on that!).
  • I also woke up last night with fierce leg cramps. I got up and took some potassium, and my daughter, who had just come home from a friend's parent's funeral was up eating popcorn (salted), and I ate some and felt a lot better. so maybe you're right. By the way, I'm normal weight and on this for solidarity with my husband,…
  • Generally, it's just under 100 grams, so not extreme. In fact, on day 1 of the diet, it was around 120. I also have a rash on my left arm. I'm not a huge sugar eater, but before the diet, I did eat whole wheat bread for sandwiches, whole wheat English muffins for breakfast, and occasionally brown rice or pasta for dinner.…
  • Not entirely. We had some fried chicken from the week-end, and I ended up eating it while husband had fish. He actually asked my son and I to eat up the leftovers from Easter so they wouldn't be hanging around.
  • I'm already taking 4 caps of fish oil every day. I did some research and colestoff has the same ingredient as red yeast rice -- that's why it works as a statin. Does CoQ10 lower cholesterol or does it have some other purpose (to alleviate the side effects of statins)?
  • I guess "my deal" in this is that we are both late middle-aged (I'm 57 and he is 56), and his mom died from complications of diabetes, and his dad died at 66 from heart disease. So, it's not just that I'm this young married gal with a chubby hubby; I'm contemplating what it would be like to spend our "golden years" taking…
