  • This is just a follow-up on my thread. I've been on the Red yeast rice for about 4 weeks and ended up discontinuing due to extreme pain in my hip joints and lower back which seems to be completely unrelated to any exercise or other physical activity I'm doing. When I stopped using it, the pain began to subside. Basically,…
  • I've been traveling a bit for Easter so just got back to all the posts. We're in the Boston area, and Dr. Ludwig, who is at Harvard and also in charge of the obesity program in Children's Hospital, was interviewed in the Boston Globe and has had a lot of press in our area, so both my husband and I heard and read about the…
  • When at home he ate what I ate but in larger portions. However I still ate carbs and grains and am maintaining eating them. I just measure and track portions whereas if he eats a bowl of cereal he'll fill the bowl to overflowing and want more. I don't have that extreme hunger or craving he has. I would have healthy meals…
  • I've been with this guy 32 years and my sons are in their early 20s, and he has never blamed his weight on me or the kids. He is aware of his own history and genetics (diabetes and overeweight are in his family background). Granted, he may be looking for a way to excuse a failure to stick to plan, but he's not "blaming…
  • Nope, our bedroom is on the second floor, so not unless company's coming. I'd rather spend my time on the parts of the house people actually see. I usually straighten the covers out at night though, if I'm conscious enough before dropping into it.
  • One thing he suggests is that I stick with this program as an experiment and see if I can lose that "last five pounds."
  • The diet doesn't cut carbs completely, just grain-based carbs, starchy vegetables like potatoes, and high glycemic index fruits like bananas and mangos for the first two weeks. All other fruits, dairy, and beans are allowed. I guess the purpose is to cut cravings and reduce insulin resistance. In the second phase, whole…
  • If you're not counting the wine as part of your daily calories, I guess it could affect your loss. I'm maintaining and usually have 1 6 oz. glass per night, which is about 120 calories. If you're drinking a "big pour" or 2 glasses, that' 240 calories, so it could be keeping the weight on. You might have to limit or measure…
  • They are a good source of fiber and extra protein. You can add them to oatmeal, yogurt, smoothies, etc. They do swell up when cooked or in liquid. However, they are fairly high calorie, 60 calories per tablespoon. So, they are not a weight loss miracle pill unless you're counting them into your daily calories.
  • You should eat the calories you get on workout days, since you need them to fuel or recover from your workout. Some people "save" the extra calories for a day when they want a "cheat" meal, so if you don't fee especially hungry after working out, I guess you can do that.
  • I agree with OP. The maintenance calories for a smaller, lighter person are pretty low. I'm 5'1.5", and I use a Fitbit HR and am in maintenance. It's a rare day that I get over 1500 calories, and I'm fairly active, typically walking 10,000 steps a day. I'm on vacation this week and was "rained in" yesterday, and did a van…
  • You could try a daily regimen of nexium or another over-the-counter anti-heartburn/reflux med. You might also want to go back to your doctor. Vomiting after eating 1/2 cup of food and losing 30 lbs. in a short period is a sign of illness. If you have too much bile, you could have gall bladder issues.
  • You look great! My own advice might be to think about continuing your current eating and exercise program and see what happens. The last weight is the hardest to lose, but also, from looking at the picture, I notice that you are a larger framed person, so 130 might be too low for you.
  • Even if you were a vegan, broccoli would not be the go-to food source for protein. Soy products, grains like qunioa, beans, and nuts have far more protein than broccoli. If you're going to advocate vegainism, at least do some comparisons with comparable food groups. Who the heck is going to eat 9 cups of broccoli?
  • I use Nexium every day to help with heartburn. I'm actually a bit lactose intolerant and having dairy at night gives me heartburn rather than the low GI symptoms; I've suffered especially after ice cream at night, which I had last night!
  • The Fibit calculates calories you're burning not only for deliberate exercise, but also just your daily activities. Even if you're sleeping or doing office work, you're still burning calories, so the fibit is giving you your TDEE, and you need to eat at a deficit to lose. If you set it to sync with MFP, MFP will tell you…
  • Let's put it in another way. I'm female and in the 50ish range, and my spouse is heavy, while I'm still fit. I'd love for my SO to lose 25 lbs. or more. What if I went to a male strip club and had a lap dance with one of the strippers because I'm not happy with my spouse's body? Would that, then, be OK because my own…
  • Your BMI is already on the low end of normal for your height. 11 lbs. is a big loss in 2 months time for someone who is not overweight to begin with. My recommendation is that you eat at maintenance and continue to work out, which will retain muscle mass. That would mean eating at least 1500, or if you're eating 1200,…
  • I just took up belly dancing in the late fall, and I really enjoy it. That belly roll is quite an ab workout. I can't perform, but it's great fun to be in a class with several women who are enjoying themselves and celebrating their bodies.
  • I'm the same age as OP and also married to a man who is significantly overweight and who now has Type II diabetes. Once someone is in his 50s and overweight, the problem is more than cosmetic and extends to a whole range of health issues that affect our long-term future together. I'm also normal weight, exercise, and take…
  • A cup of broccoli has 3 grams of protein, while 4 ounces of chicken has 29 grams. You'd have to eat 9 and a half cups of broccoli to get to 29 grams of protein.
  • I'm a petite older gal who does some strength training, yoga, and cardio, and I try to get in the 80ish range (but don't always make it). Yesterday, I did pretty well and ate over 100g. I have my base calories set to 1000 and my fitbit sync adds in activity calories which I eat back, so I'm eating around 1500 a day. By the…
  • While you say you have a very good marriage, that your husband is saying he isn't attracted to you because you are less curvy and more muscular, and is now going to strip clubs behind your back, says otherwise. Most men would be proud and delighted to have a wife with a fit body -- 116 lbs. is a good weight for a woman who…
  • I never had the surgery, but had to do about 16 weeks of physical therapy for a shoulder injury. However, I could still do cardio, abs, and lower body work. I'm normal weight, so I didn't gain or lose, but maintained. I did lose muscle in the upper arms, though, and am gradually getting back into routine. Anytime I tried…
  • Why is the CoQ10 recommended? Th Why is the CoQ10 recommended? Some of the products recommended that you use that, too, but the pharmacist didn't say anything about it. I just thought it was the supplement company trying to sell something extra. Is there any harm in not taking the CoQ10 with it?
  • I'm 5'1.5", 120 lbs., and 57. I maintain on around 1200 if I'm sedentary, between 1500-1700 if I exercise. It's a rare day when I can eat 2000. Just to illustrate what a huge difference size and age play in caloric needs.
  • My practitioner "called in" the request for the Red Rice Yeast to the pharmacy and the pharmacist recommended a couple of brands and suggested I just take one a day, at most two, so I'm trying one pill a day to see how it goes. I already take fish oil, eat nuts, and occasionally use Metamucil. Like Kes840, the rest of my…
  • I just began War and Peace after watching the miniseries on Lifetime/A&E. I had always wanted to read it and it was available on my Kindle for free. I had felt daunting by the idea of carrying this enormous book around and also about the difficulty of keeping track of the characters, but I've been pleasantly surprised.…
  • Mine slowed down around 50. I eat about half of what I did in my 40s and I'm just maintaining, not losing, yet I'm just as active.
  • I'd just eat the pasta and make sure to measure and count it. I have pasta once a week, sometimes twice if I have leftovers, but usually no more than a cup at a meal (2 oz. dry). I don't eat pasta more than that because eating pasta all the time just isn't a very balanced diet.
