  • This is from the Coriell Institute for Medical Research - they do genetic testing and I am one of the early volunteers: "Genetic vs. Non-Genetic Risk Factors Obesity is caused by eating more calories than are used in physical activity. The risk of becoming obese is influenced by both genetic factors and non-genetic (or…
  • I have lost a little over 100 lbs. I went the "clean" eating route. Minimal processed foods, farmers market veges, organic meats and more turkey, fish, than meat. Some fruits. No added sugar or sweets except for the occasional dark chocolate treat maybe once a week. It has not been smooth sailing all the way and I have had…
  • I have my saturated fat set at 7g per 1200 calories trying to keep it at 10% or so. Maybe to low? I know the saturated fat argument but I don't think the evidence is there for it (JMHO) but do agree fats are good as a whole.
  • I find when I can lift something 15 times it is time for me to increase that weight to the next increment then only lift 6-8 times then increase again up to 15 times then more weight, and so on.
  • Tapioca pudding, I use stevia instead of sugar to keep the carbs lower than the store bought since my honey has diabetes and this is one of the I gotta have it weaknesses. But it is a pain to make so I only make it one in a while.
  • Really harsh, glad you are not a buddy of mine!
  • Monday - morning 40 minutes light aerobics gets my blood going, evening lift weights 40 minutes and 10 minutes on cardio to warm up Tuesday - morning 40 minutes light aerobics, evening 25 minutes elliptical and 35 minutes stationary bike Wednesday - repeat Monday Thursday - repeat Tuesday Friday - repeat Monday Saturday -…
  • Sorry, I know "clean" can be a loaded word. For me clean eating is nothing processed and this includes pasta, bread, canned, boxed as well as doing my best to eliminate added sugar. I eat fresh fruits (no more than one serving a day), lots of vegetables mostly green with other colors mixed in, proteins with fish first,…
  • I used to take 10 meds a day including meds for high blood pressure, arthritis, depression, insomnia, vitamins, fish oil, etc. After losing about 100 (still going) I am down to the following: 1 baby aspirin a day 1/4 of what I used to take for high blood pressure (doc thinks after another 20 lbs probably off it all…
  • I eat a brand called wild planet albacore tuna in water (no salt added) and it has only 100mg (4% daily value) of sodium. I am sure there are other brands with lower sodium. Don't give up tuna, just read the labels and find a brand with lower sodium that will work for you!
  • I think that "click" happened before I realized it. For me over the holiday I wanted to stay in maintenance mode to prevent weight gain that comes with all the holiday goodies. Halfway into the holidays (around late December) I realized I was not drawn to the goodies and gravies and gravitated naturally toward salad and…
  • I got some advice from a person (Darya Pino) online. If you ever heard of her she is a scientist who also is very much into eating healthy, exercise, etc. Google her if you want to look at her website as I am not trying to make an ad here just a point. She suggested that I put some beans in my diet to offset the cravings.…
  • I like to nibble in the evening. That nibbling has been the hardest part of my lifestyle changes to well change. So rather than get into a real struggle where I often give in I have compromised with myself. In the evening after dinner but only 2 hours after dinner I allow myself a couple of sugar free popcycles (if you…
  • My goal is to have a body that can show off a tattoo well. I don't have any tattoo's but once I reach my goal weight I plan on getting one of a heart with my three kids names in it. Just not sure where to get it, any suggestions (I don't like pain)?
  • 16 oz. of any 0% greek plain yogurt 1 packet hidden valley ranch a little bit of water as needed to liquify This is a great low fat, low calorie rich dressing, I love it. And I just omit the water if I want to use it as a dip for my vegetables.
  • I started in the pool but not swimming, just gently walking back and forth and built on that slowly. After a year of totally in the pool I was able to move out of it for walking, low impact aerobics, and exercise bike. Main thing for me is to listen to my body and on bad days with my back (stenosis, herniated discs, pinch…
  • First always check with your doctors before doing anything new, but I have pretty severe problems in my back, hernias', narrowing (stenosis), arthritis, and on. I am not sure what your phisio consists of but here is what I do every day. I started out in the pool walking and then doing a total pool workout. I can now walk 2…
  • For me, this site and the many other sites and resources I have used have been one big education. Like in many other self-help programs (and I do not advocate any as they just didn't work all around for me) I take what I can and what makes sense and leave the rest. Now, as I learn about myself what makes sense changes.…
  • Hi going on 52 here. My goal for the month is to keep going like I am going. I exercise 2 hours a day with low impact, swimming, and a nice lunchtime walk. I have a sedentary job hence the amount of exercise. I am in a groove and want to just keep going to keep forming that habit! Have 3 grown children and that thing about…
  • I just wanted to put out the opposite side so people know. I am on a beta blocker and it tends to keep my heart rate lower so trying to get my heart rate up to the recommend could be dangerous for me. If you are on any medication check with your doctor before you use a heart rate monitor!
  • I think everyone is just being safe here on seeing the doctor first. I agree as only your doctor knows exactly how any exercise will help or hurt you. That being said (and I do see my doctor every 3 months and we go over any new exercise before I try them) I have found doing modified aerobics in a swimming pool to be the…
  • Yes, I eat 1800-2000 total. I don't count my exercise calories any more. Just makes my net look so low.
  • 1. do not have a net calorie goal as it was 1200 and I was not losing what MFP said (1.9lbs a week) so I just eat about 1800-2000 calories a day and exercise 2x a day on the bike and swim when I can. 2. I swim moderately (according to MFP and other sites) and my bike is set to moderate as well. I use my breathing to gauge…
  • My goals don't deal with weight loss as I stress to much over it and I have over 100 pounds to go. Instead I set food goals. I started by limiting meat to 3x a week, then 2x etc. Down now to no meat. then cut down on sugar, cut down on processed foods, add in more beans and grains and so on. My latest goal is to cut down…
  • I have moderate arthritis in both knees, upper and lower spine, left hip, neck, hands, and shoulder. I have had arthritis for 15 years. I had a spinal fusion of c4-c5 at age 35. About 6 months ago I took up exercising in the pool at our local gym. I started out with just walking and now do a vigorous 40 minute workout of…
  • For myself, I exercise every day in some form. I can make up all kinds of excuses to not exercise and reason them out so well. Also there is just so many good reasons to exercise why not do it? You will have to ask yourself deep down what is going on? Hope this helps.
  • I know this may be a very hard question to answer with any accuracy. I am 5' 3", female. In general how many pounds must one loss to go down one size. For example: say I am in size 22, how may pounds would I need to loss to go to size 20?
  • I feel good, just the protein on the diary shows 50% less than recommended. I go to the doctor in November and she is going to to a complete blood panel to make sure everything is ok still. Water is the only thing I drink besides 2 cups of coffee in the morning. I don't track my water though since I drink about 8 ounces…
  • Fish is my favorite food. I really like it but the mercury content has me worried and the more I get into vegan the more aware of environment I become. Don't want to debate that, everyone makes their own choices. I don't judge, just do what feels right for me. And again for my family history with heart disease I want to…
