  • 6'1" 45 years here. I used to be pretty fit, fell off the wagon and was 247 back in July. A routine trip the doc over the summer revealed I had the beginnings of high cholesterol. I'm very adverse to "popping pills" for every ailment without doing everything possible to to fix things (I'm not anti-medicine, I just think…
  • THIS. Im within 10 pounds of my goal weight, 2 months ahead of schedule and I dont worry about eating my calories back. Frankly I dont understand the controversy. You just need to experiment and do what works best for you.

  • White bread is aweful. It's a simple carbohydrate which your body absorbs quickly and it spikes your insulin. Whole Wheat Bread is a complex carb and takes long to digest. Personally, I'd stay clear of Bagels, but that's jus me. Keep tracking your nutrition info
  • Did a 5K a couple weeks ago. 31.14 = 10.03 pace. Mile one killed me between an overpass and the normal pack separation. I paced mile 1 at 11:35, paced 2 and 3 at sub 9:40. I need to do another one soon. I think I can get to sub 30.00
  • There's a lot of things you can do. First and foremost, if you have a desk job, schedules yourself an alarm to get up and walk, even if it's around the office and back to your desk everything 30 minutes. If you have a big enough office, sneak some planks in to strengthen your core. You could work your shoulders and tris by…

  • As Chefdan mentioned, the couch to 5k problem is a great way for a beginning to get into running. I ran a half marathon a few years ago, and after falling off the wagon for the last 2.5 years, I followed it for a few weeks until I got back into my zone. Additionally, if you want to get into running, I can stress enough the…

  • I have a oouple comments to make. Firsthand foremost, I LOVE your analytical breakdown of your progress. • I lost 85 pounds 5 years ago (gained about 40 of it back which is what I'm working on this time) and I got rid of it all except one pair of jeans. It motivates me to never get to that point again.
  • I've gotten this every day this week from someone at work. I ran a 5k this past weekend and one lady told another lady " doesn't he look great, he's an athlete now,". Lol that made my week. :)

  • I do not think this is realistic. 1-2 per week pounds is realistic and obtainable. Also, I personally do not like atkins, and do not believe in their philosphy. I did Atkins about 8 years ago and afterwards I blew up like a balloon. From what I read, this is common with Atkins. Carbohydrates are not evil and are a key…

  • I think reading ingredients is VERY important. Some peanut butter is utter garbage with hydrogenated oils and excess sugar. My personal favorite is Smuckers Natural PB with honey, I put some a teaspoon in my oatmeal every morning. However, Im not advertising for them. Just make sure the ingredients is things you can read…
  • This should be required reading for everyone just starting out.
  • Here's one that I read every morning: Yesterday is a cancelled check, tomorrow is a promissary note, today is the cash you have. Spend it wisely.
