I have friends with high blood pressure that limit sodium to under 1,500 daily. But I do cycling and running and I sweat profusely so I add extra sodium on intense exercise days to make up for what I lose in sweat. I get very dehydrated on long rides and runs and the extra sodium in exercise drinks encourages me to drink…

Good inserts did the trick for me in dealing with pf. I thpught that I had a bruised heel or something but was quickly diagnosed with pf. I could not afford the custom made insets but bought Dean Karnazes ones from Sole and they took care of it for me. It doesn't seem like the inserts give support in the right place but…

I am twelve years older than my wife (I am turning sixty in July,) but I am very fit and trim and she is much less so, so I am actually much more active and young acting than her. When couples are in their 30's. 40's, and 50's a ten year difference is really not much, but, I must caution that in my opinion it starts to get…

Same here. My wife maintains her own account and spends hours playing with it, reconciling it, and moving everything to Excel to budget. She is old school with pencil and paper. I use Quickbooks and check activity online daily. Reconciling takes me less than two minutes at the end of the month while my wife struggles with…

Low carb is the diet of sedentary people. Active people need carbs to fuel their activities. Even the good card/bad carb argument breaks down for endurance athletes. As a cyclist I have to work to get enough carbs and while on the bike I need simple carbs high on the glycemic index (the alleged bad carbs) like drinks with…

It took me a long time to get past shin splints. I too had good shoes and did icing and all that but shin splints still derailed me. As noted in my own comment, I had to cut the c25k run times back to 30 and even 15 seconds and I eventually had success. I also run mostly on trails and recommend trail running as it provides…

I started running in my mid-fifties and I’m now 59. I had to take it really slow to start with since I kept getting shin splints even with a slow build up like c25K. Where c25k called for 60 second jogs I had to do 30 second sets and even just 15 for a while. But I stuck with it and it paid off for me. I am primarily a…

Why choose? Go for both! All things don't hinge on the calorie burn. Each activity offers benefits that can compliment the other. Like some others here, I prefer riding a real bike outdoors which offers another set of benefits as well. I am a huge believer in variety and cross training so just enjoy some of all.

I use the sport model with a bright ugly yellow strap in the hope that an emt might see it if I am unconscious or incapacitated. I wore it mountain biking one day and somehow lost it on the trail (had to remove some layers as it warmed up.) A few days later someone called me from an out of state bike shop and said they…

While there are some posters here who say that running caused knee them issues, in most cases it is an improper approach to running that causes problems. Some people have genetic issues or other predispositions to injury, but most people can run safely and enjoy tremendous cardio-vascular and muscular-skeletal benefits.…

It is untrue that running only builds bone density in the lower legs. I do agree that weigthed squats are great for hips, but running benefits hips (and the entire body) as well. My md advocated running to help heal a broken arm. Running benefits the entire muscular/skeletal system. Here is a link that touches on this…

Agree completely! Well, since this woman is a supervisor you might want to find a nice way to tell her she is full of crap. Also, I trail run which is on softer surfaces and I adore being out in the woods.

I had no weight problem as a youth or for many, many years. As an adult I ate horribly, avoided exercise, and drank excessively for decades but stayed in a healthy weight range. I didn't gain weight until I was in my fifties, long after giving up alcohol and the lifestyle that should have packed the weight on. I can't…

This, plus a big one, running builds bone density and walking does not. I am turning 60 on my next birthday making me old enough to start thinking about bone density as I age, so it's a is a huge push towards running for me. It's also a issue for all women of any age.

LOL!

That is too funny! I took the Fizik Tundra off my mountain bike but like the Fizik Aliante on the road bike. To each his own!
-
I rented a Fizik Aliante and after four rides I have decided to purchase one. I have ridden saddles with cutouts for several years and I am amazed at how comfortable a saddle without one is. I'm having no issues from the lack of a cutout and the saddle seems so supportive and comfy. But my recent saddles were less…

I'm with those that found a love for running when doing on a trail! I just love being outdoors on a trail in the morning. My fav trail winds along beside a river so I see beautiful trees, the river, wildlife, and mountains in the distance. Yeah, I love it! Cyling is my real passion and running is my cross training, but the…

Thanks everyone! I still haven't pulled the trigger on a purchase yet; I work for a nonprofit and I'm way behind on receiving paychecks (like three months behind and falling even farther behind!) So that gives me lots of time to contemplate the purchase. Clearly saddle preference is highly personal but if I had local…

I'm doing the plain greek yogurt, which by itself is too plain, and adding a half serving of vanilla protein powder and some fresh blueberries. That keeps the carbs down and protein up. I'm not actually low carb I just prefer to get carbs elsewhere. The dannon oikos plain greek yogurt is only 80 cals. With protein powder…

Fizik Aliante is the one I'm seriously considering.

I'm still checking in here because I have not made a purchase yet. Probably will buy within a month ;not rushing since it is still early in the season. I might add that I have been riding for many years and have used many saddles. But what used to work for me now is uncomfortable. Maybe it's age. Currently I am seriously…

Now I have to go to Taco Bell for dinner! And I was planning baked skinless chicken breast. Moderation.

Here is where it gets so personal. I noticed that in an earlier post you advocate thin socks, but thin doesn't work for me at all. Can't stand thin! Couldn't wear stoics if they were offered free for life. But I also can't take the densely cushioned socks like a lot of the Thorlo's. I use the Smartwool lightly cushioned…

Smartwool PhD socks are the absolute best running socks! I kept reading about them in Runners World and elsewhere but thought "wool?, I don't want wool socks!" But I finally tried them a couple years ago and all the praise is right on. They are designed for year round comfort. The only way to go!

Well done, congrats! Go for it!

I like and give smiles, waves, thumbs up. Honks are kinda questionable.. "was that a happy honk or an angry honk?"
-
A good time to mix in some trail running where the trees help block the wind.
