  • Wow...sounds like a really tough time. High school was horrible. People say it was the best years of their lives. Not that I've ever heard of. Most everyone I know says it was horribly insecure. Hope things get better for everyone.
  • Understood. Is there a gym in a nearby larger town where could go one day and make an appointment to get started then take the program home with you? May be an option to look into. Good for you getting started with it. You will feel great.
  • Hi Prairie Pride. I've "restarted" strength training this month with a specialized trainer at a fitness center. You are correct, we definitely lose muscle mass if we don't use and as we get older. Weight bearing exercise is extremely important for women. I was on the high school swim team, a gymnast in college, and then…
  • I guess this is the formal way to do this?
  • These sound like wonderful trips. Don't you love travel? Seeing how other people live in the world makes you appreciate your own four walls. It can also be devastating. So much poverty, hunger and fear. Also, world travel teaches us that "we" are not the only way to live. There are other countries with wonderful standards…
  • Wow...you are really doing well. Congrats.
  • Wow---those are a lot of exercise classes! Impressive. How do you have time for all that?
  • I have always loved bread, pasta, pizza, bagels, all of it. I never thought I could give it up, but it has not been that difficult. I found when I had a bagel for breakfast, I was hungry at 10:00 AM. It's true that protein really does satisfy hunger longer. So, I have protein at every meal. Makes a big difference. Even…
  • A big part of the problem, for men and women, is as we age we lose muscle mass (muscle burns more fat and increases our metabolism). Hormones change... which is why we see ourselves and others gaining weight more easily as we get older. Therefore, if we ate the same now as when we were twenty....well, there you go. It…
  • How do you like your elliptical trainer. Been using it for years. I have the arms and legs design and can set resistance. Guess they are all the same? Feels like I get a good cardio workout as well as some resistance work. Better than nothing.
  • I love being a grandma.... The funny thing is that we have three sons and three grandsons!!!! No girls and none on the horizon. Two boys married, one with two boys, the other with one and they are not having anymore. The third son is a very happy bachelor...Doubt if he will have kids if or when he gets married. Too old…
  • Keeps you limber. Important as we get older as being limber helps reduce injury. I'm much more stiff now than even 5 years ago which is one reason I joined the fitness center. My husband has a bit of a back problem. Interesting the doc said that our stomach muscles actually strengthen the back, but you probably know this…
  • Love the topic. Yes, we are staying younger longer. Isn't it wonderful. You are very clever and fun. So glad to have found you on the site.
  • Hi Marcia: Happy to be supportive.
  • Bummer about your foot. Hope it heals quickly so you can walk...double bummer with your stomach. Geez, both at same time!
  • Still haven't had the guts to check the scale yet. Will wait another day. Hate getting discouraged...but reality is important. Thanks.
  • Thanks...truly appreciate the strong support on this board.
  • Yep---we certainly are. I often wonder why it matters so much to me that I stay trim and fit. A few pounds won't make a big difference to my health, yet my self image--and vanity--push me hard. Wonder what is the healthiest approach?
  • Sounds like you are way back to "recovery." Never thought of it that way, but makes sense.
  • Thanks so much. I really appreciate the support. It's one thing to know one day won't hurt, yet when we work so hard to lose one pound, it's so guilt-making to indulge. Thanks again.
  • Hi and Welcome. I'm still "sort of" new...just a couple of weeks. Question, as the word is in caps, what is the Insanity Program?
  • Interesting you talk about strength training. You are so right. I've been doing the elliptical training that does give some strength work as you can set resistance, but not the same as weights. I get great cardio, but enough of a real weight workout. Hence....on my agenda now. So....will definitely take your advice and add…
  • Hi Everyone: I just joined also. I'm 67 now and determined not to become one of those chunky, middle-aged women. As a Baby Boomer, I refuse to get "old." Yeah, older....but not old if you know what I mean. It's a slow go.....but now that I'm in the diet groove, I'm determined not to lose any ground I've gained. Onward.
  • Hi Everyone I'm 68 and trying to shed 20 pounds. I weigh as much now as I did when I was pregnant!!!! I'm determined not to turn into one of those "chubby" older ladies. I still feel young. I have a "mini" orchard, (222 fruit trees and chickens and take care of it all myself. My sweetie isn't into this stuff, but helps out…
  • Walking is excellent exercise. Lots of people us it to lose weight. One way to make it interesting is to listen to a favorite radio show while you are walking. If you have the time, start when the show goes on, Use it as a marker. It works.
