  • I finally caved and bought a bunch of new clothes, even though I'm only halfway to my goal. I've gone down 3 pant sizes though, so my clothes were literally hanging off of me. I feel skinnier today wearing stuff that actually fits, so it was totally worth it. I got a lot of stuff on sale, too, so it wasn't super expensive.…
  • I have been overweight my entire life, and I was starting to see the ill effects of it. My knees were hurting, my stomach was hurting, my butt was so fat that I could barely fit in seats. I was terrified of flying. And I knew I was killing myself with food. I've taken off 73 lbs now (about half way to my goal) and I…
  • I eat a Luna bar everyday and have lost 70 lbs. So I don't care if anyone thinks they are unhealthy. They give me carbs and protein. I enjoy the taste. They fit in my calories.
  • No, if anything I sleep better. No more snoring. Exercise makes me tired at the end of the day. I don't wake up a ton anymore.
  • I don't have proof, but I don't think it shrinks in size. I think we just get used to it being less full.
  • I totally believe in this whoosh thing. I've been losing weight very non-linearly. Just these last couple of weeks, I had two weeks of no loss, then last week I lost 5.6 lbs. I eat at a 2 lb a week deficit. Last week I was peeing all week, too.
  • Actually that's not true. I'm a GI pathologist and the stomach of a 500 lb person is going to be way bigger than the stomach of a 100 lb person. (In general, unless they are a professional eater or something)I'm not saying the stomach shrinks (I think we just get used to the feeling of less food) but if you consistently…
  • I'm Kristen, 37 years old, from NJ. I changed my lifestyle 5 months ago, when I weighed in at 330 lbs (the heaviest I've ever weighed). I've been overweight since I was a young teenager, I can't remember the last time my weight began with a 1. I've lost weight before, getting close to 200 lbs about six years ago, but then…
  • I had two big things: 1). I couldn't fit well into my seat at a football game, my hips were so wide I bruised myself trying to fit into the seat. 2). I started to have knee pain in one of my knees that I had injured as a kid. Turns out I have pretty bad arthritis in that knee, and I'm only 37. I don't want to need a knee…
  • I'm cold all of the time now, too. Folks at work make fun of me. Makes sense though, I've lost a lot of insulation.
  • It lasted three weeks for me. I lost a lot of weight, plus I drastically changed my eating habits to more fresh veggies/lean protein, so I was NEVER hungry. Now, five months and change in, the losses are much slower and I'm hungry before meals.
  • Agreed!!! My motivation comes and then goes. Motivation and determination/persistence are very different. I am totally unmotivated at times, but I'm determined to keep going, whether I feel like it or not.
  • If you have a lot of weight to lose, be prepared for a long haul with lots of ups and downs. Some weeks the scale cooperates, some weeks it doesn't. I'm learning not to get too emotional by what that little plastic and metal box says.
  • I eat an egg white delight from McDonalds almost every morning and I'm doing fine with the weight loss. Especially considering that egg white delight used to be two breakfast burritos and a hash brown before I changed my eating habits.
  • I had eight weeks of nutrition in medical school. Not enough for me to give advice to other folks on nutrition, so if I saw patients (I don't because I'm a pathologist, I look at biopsies under the microscope and do autopsies), then I would refer my patients to registered dietitians. As in every profession, there are good…
  • Water is all I drink, so I regularly drink about 12-15 glasses a day. I have a brita bottle and I fill it up all day. One it keeps me full (I'm way less hungry when I drink alot) and two, it helps when I eat more sodium than I should (which is somewhat often).
  • I do eat the "healthier" items at fast food joints, like salads (assuming they don't have a ton of cheese/bacon ect), Subway 6 inch subs, salad from chipotle, but I try to stay away from burgers/fried stuff. I use to go to the drive-through ALOT, and it took me awhile to get out of the habit of stopping on my way home from…
  • One of my Facebook "friends" kept advertising this isagenix crap on Facebook. Gave me a good reason to delete her, since she was kind of a snot back in the day. Sorry, my intestines don't need to be cleansed, they do that just fine on their own.
  • I had about eight weeks in four years of med school. That being said, the folks who go into areas where they deal with the comorbidities associated with excess weight (cards, endo) probably learn additional stuff during residency/fellowship. To add to that, most doctors have never been overweight a day in their life, and…
  • This thread makes me giggle. I cut back on my diet coke intake, but that was because I had an NSAID induced ulcer from my wisdom teeth. Now that my stomach is healed, I've reintroduced it and I feel fine. It can cause tooth decay (nothing to do with aspartame, secondary to the acidity/phosphates) but if you brush your…
  • Mine is boredom. If I'm bored, I want to eat, even if I'm not hungry. So I make sure to keep myself busy, by going out or to the gym.
  • Also check your sneakers. I was having knee and ankle pain because I have flat feet so I was over pronating when I walked ( my inside aspect of my foot would roll in). Got fitted with appropriate sneakers--no more pain!
  • I just joined a gym this week, because I wanted to spice up my workouts. But I lost 60 lbs without it.
  • Your sister would be proud of you for starting this journey! Baby steps add up, just take it one day at a time.
  • I say this in the nicest way possible, but you need to see someone for your disordered pattern of eating.
  • Good luck. I used to drink at least 32 oz of diet coke a day, sometimes more. I switched it with water and now have a can or two a week. My stomach feels so much better!

  • I used to weigh myself 2 or 3 times a week, but I've decided to stick with once a week from now on. I've had too many weeks where I've had a mid week water gain, gotten stressed, then lost by my normal weigh in. I'm not very good at seeing the fluctuations, so it's better that I don't look.
  • I like 90's-2000's rap--like Dr.Dre/Eminem when I work out. The angrier the song is, the more I push myself! Also, Sia for some reason. Her songs make me move more.
  • I agree with the folks who mentioned Chipotle. I love the salad (no dressing) with extra fajita veggies, chicken, tomato salsa, and a bit of cheese. Yum!
