Garmin GPS watch. I just got the 220 and love it. The forerunner 15 is much cheaper and also tracks steps; but must be connected to a PC to upload your runs. The 220 and 620 will upload wireless. Used to use Endomondo app on my phone, which worked OK, but hate lugging a phone around.

You are wise to address this issue now. There are many things you can do to control the symptoms and BG levels. A great start would be to read all the info at the following site. Then ask lots of questions! http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/index.php

In general, I've found my fasting numbers have come down a few points (normally around 95 in the morning) What I find interesting is I normally run in the morning and often the BG is 5 points higher after the run. I assumed running would "burn up" the glucose. Whatever the reason for this; on avg my BG avg numbers have…

Interesting that you ask that because I was just discussing this with my wife... Technically; its my "C25K app" that literally says when to start running or start walking. But in the beginning of the program the challenge was 90% physical. My legs got very tired and sore and my heart was pounding and lungs not able to get…

The problem is the Samsung phone HRM is not continuous. Stopping what you are doing and Checking your HR every now and then has limited usefulness. Edit: Sorry I misread your post and thought you were referring to the phone. Re the Samsung smartwatch; most reviews show it to be inaccurate and finicky about how it must be…

Never heard of it either. But the reviews on Amazon should answer the question pretty well.

>>When you go over 80%, you are in the anaerobic state. This is not a sustainable zone and in the world of sports, sprinters are the best example of anaerobic activity. If you stay within 65 to 80%, you can sustain that for hours and hours and hours depending on what sort of shape your muscles are in, your cardiovascular…

Yes; its very interesting. The primal part of the brain is saying; "hey; nobody is chasing us and we are not chasing food; stop this insane running" while the higher level functions of the brain are saying "there is a reason for this effort; just deal with it". Its actually a fascinating thing to think about.

$100 is a bargain for the right shoe. Is saving $50 really worth months of pain? Buying expensive shoes does not guarantee no pain; but having the wrong shoe will certainly cause problems. Get fitted with the correct shoes, make sure you take rest days and try running on softer surfaces. I switched to a rubberized track…

Just did my first 10 min continuous run today. It went better than I expected. I am learning that the further I get into the C25K the more the effort transitions from a physical one to a mental one. Today my body was fine with it; my brain kept questioning my sanity. Next friday is the intimidating 20 minute run for me.…

I haven't updated in a couple weeks... I ran 10 min continuous today; which is the longest I have run continuously since high school back in the 1970s :) Today's workout was 5 minutes walking > 10 minutes running > 5 minutes walking > 5 minutes running > 5 minutes walking Even though 10 minutes is only part way there, I am…

I am very close to getting a Garmin gps watch. I loath hauling a phone on my runs. As mentioned; a dedicated gps watch is generally more accurate than the gps on phones, and certainly lighter and more convenient. Some of the garmin watches will automatically upload your data to your phone/ web when it sees your phone or…

You would be the first documented case in the world that I know of . But I suspect this is not true. I suspect you have controlled your symptoms, Not reversed the disease. It is awesome to be able to control your symptoms with diet and sometimes drugs. Dont cheapen that hard work by saying the disease itself is reversed,…

Yea; I hate wires. Get the bluetooth version.

Impressive. You look Great!

You dont want headphones with noise cancellation features for running. That would be pretty dangerous. The headsets design for running all purposely allow ambient noise in. I like the Yurbuds.

My Novice Opinion: HRM will help estimate running burned calories better than just estimating based on time running. But its still a calculation. If you are getting HRM just to improve the accuracy of estimating calories burned, I'd say its not worth it. Is improving the calorie burn rate accuracy really that critical? If…

Another vote for endomondo. Endomondo also has C25K training programs built into it so you can track and train with the same app.
-
It is listed as water resistant, not waterproof. Though they say to go ahead and shower with it they don't recommend swimming with it. It wont track swimming correctly anyway.

This one is a pedometer (tracks steps) and watch: http://sites.garmin.com/vivo/ This one tracks steps, has watch and is also a GPS if you want to track distance on walks or runs: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/into-sports/running/forerunner-15/prod145621.html

Dont agree that whole wheat is a "good carb". White bread and wheat bread have the same amount of carbs. You might argue that wheat bread has more nutrients than white bread, but carb wise its just as bad.

Most heart rate monitors connect to an app or other device which does the calorie calculation based on your age, gender, weight and heartrate. The heart rate monitor itself typically just feeds the app the heartrate it is detecting. Its up to the app to convert the info into calorie burn calculation. For things other than…

You can not integrate a Fitbit with a Heart Rate Monitor. The only activity tracker I know that connects to a HRM is the Garmin VivoFit. It tracks steps like the fitbot but also can connect and track your HR via a HRM. Fitbit is fine if you are just tracking steps (walker). Thats all it really does.

There was a 20 Page post (not 20 posts; 20 PAGES of posts) in the fitbit forum about this. hundreds if not thousands of people were screwed by fitbit. For months they denied any problem with the fitbit force and just told their dissatisfied customers there was no problem. Then months later they finally admitted it was a…

First the brutally honest part: You didnt get to be 300lbs ASAP it took a while. So will losing it. Concentrate on a permanent healthy lifestyle and the weight will come off and you will be able to move more easily. I started at 288lbs and attempted to run. It was not pretty. Lots of pain and could only jog for 30 seconds…

Its lipstick on a pig. I had the fitbit force, and before they finally recalled the thing; they refused to replace it or refund me for that faulty product. So, Im done with fitbit. They are really just real expensive and badly designed pedometers.
-
None of the "activity monitor" type devices will give you an accurate calorie count for misc exercise like zumba. They are all basically pedometers which count your bounces via an accelerometer. They track walking fairly well because walking is a very easy thing to capture with an accelerometer. Each step causes one bounce…

Congrats. Starting is the hardest part! I am about halfway done mine and cant believe I can now run 5 minutes in a row! When I started I could only run for 30 seconds at a time. You can do it!

You may also check out a fairly new device: Garmin's Vivofit. It has similar features to the fitbit and UP but also has the ability to connect to a heart rate monitor to record your heartrate. http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/03/garmin-vivofit-review.html

WOW. You are an inspiration to me and many others; Im sure. Hope to be down 100lbs in about six months myself.
