I had a similar experience where I walked into a store and asked the clerk for a certain style of jacket. She said "you're tiny, let's try the kids section." I don't consider myself tiny, that was a bit of overstatement, but it felt great to hear it.

I've been taking a beta blocker for about 8 years to manage irregular heartbeat following valve replacement surgery. I lost quite a bit of weight the year after surgery (my first year on beta blockers) through diet and exercise. I don't know if it would have been easier without the meds but I was able to lose steadily…

I know this is an old thread but I went looking for it because this has happened to me a couple times lately. I'm 5'4" and 122 lbs, BMI 20.8, and feel good. I'm not really trying to lose pounds now but I am lifting and running and would like to drop a percent or two in body fat. I'm also still figuring out maintenance, and…

You've gotten a lot of great advice already. I just wanted to add that I like to eat, and my calorie allowance is higher when I exercise, so that's extra motivation for me on top of the health benefits. But you said you knew exercise was good for you, you just don't want to do it. So: In your OP you asked if it was…

It's been accurate for me too. I used it to hit my planned 500cal deficit/day, for a 1 lb per week weight loss, and did in fact lose an average of a pound a week for 20 weeks. That was using a Flex.

I've been in my goal range for about a month and decided to stop counting calories this week. I intend to keep eating just like I have been during weight loss, except a couple hundred calories more per day. I know what that looks like so as long as I'm paying attention and not doing a lot of snacking I should be OK. What I…

I like straight leg, mid rise jeans. They're a nice middle ground between 'mom' jeans and skinny, low rider jeans. Lands End also sells a slim leg style that has a trimmer fit thru the legs but aren't painted-on tight.

I started tracking in late February. I'm at my goal now and comfortable with my current food and exercise routine. I could probably stop tracking and do fine as long as the weather was good enough to let me do all my favorite outdoor activities... But I want to continue tracking through the winter because it's so easy to…

If every day really were like the current day - in other words if you hit the same deficit day in and day out - it would be accurate. It''s just math. Most people don't hit exactly the same deficit every day so actual results vary. I guess you could say it's unrealistic since it's based on consistency, but then again, it's…

That is interesting. I'm definitely motivated by data so I guess it's no wonder the fitbit made such a big difference for me!
-
Actually it seems to pick up on steps quite well even if you're not swinging your arms. I fooled around when I first got my flex, walking around the block while deliberately moving my arms and then again with my hands in my pockets etc. It recorded a very similar number of steps both ways. I've been using it for 9 months…

 love this image! I agree with everyone who said wear what you're comfortable in. No one else at the gym is going to care.
-
Those numbers seem reasonable to me. I wear a fitbit for daily activity tracking and use an HRM for workouts, so I have a reasonably accurate idea of my calorie burns. On days I don't work out it's around 1650. When I do workout or am doing a lot of hiking it's 1800-2000 or more. And I'm 5'4". However I'm also 55 which…

^^This. I take a small portion and make it last. Or if I just don't want to partake at all, I put extra effort into making conversation and being very engaged in every way except eating. Example: I got invited to a brunch with several friends over Memorial Day weekend. I said I'd love to come but planned to eat earlier (I…

^^This. MFP looks at the fitbit data and adjusts your calorie allowance to match your fitbit-measured activity level. It works great for me, and I recommend you try just following the adjusted allowance for a while and see how things go. And I don't use the fitbit for calories goals/tracking either, only for estimating…

OP, hang in there. The scale dropped 2 lbs for me today after a 2 week stall, so I bet it will do the same for you if you can keep meeting your daily goals.
-
I've been stuck for 2 weeks after 20 weeks of consistently losing a pound a week, so I understand how frustrating it is! I read all the advice here and keep telling myself to just stay the course and be patient. In addition to "sometimes the scale doesn't budge", I know there are several small things going on that probably…

Your "cheat" does sound pretty healthy, but I just wanted to say fast food is not completely empty calories. I had breakfast at McDonald's this morning and while the amount of sodium and fat I consumed is not something I want to do very often, I also got triple the protein I would have with my normal bowl of oatmeal. Now I…

there are some good explanations of this in other threads. Search on "eating back" and you'll find them. Hope that helps.
-
this is a lot like your previous question about what a calorie deficit means. I gave an explanation in that thread but it probably wasn't clear. Bottom line, like AmyRhubarb said, yes you would eat those "extra" earned calories. Many people question that because it seems like the bigger the deficit, the faster you lose,…

OK, so I'm guessing you want to understand how your fitbit affects your net calories on MFP - hope that's right, and that this will help: On MFP you pick your activity level, based on how most days are for you. Let's say you chose lightly active. MFP estimates the number calories you'll burn based on your body data and…

This, and pinch to zoom. Easy.

Just wanted to echo those who said to use easy gears to start. I don't know if you're 'mashing' in a tough gear or not but I see people doing that and it will definitely wear you out. Use a gear you can spin comfortably. So what if it means you don't go as fast. Speed will come with time.
-
Same for me - except I always use what my HRM and calorie burn app (Digifit) say. Plus I use a fitbit for non-exercise activity, so I really never have to guess. In the last couple months, my actual calorie deficit (based on weight loss per week) and the deficit I calculated via MFP logging have been almost identical.…

Well, I've been on MFP for about 20 weeks following a 1 lb a week plan, and I've lost 20 lbs. so yeah, I'd say it works.

Personally, I read threads like this specifically to hear the pros AND cons of doing something. Yes, I can do my own research and I do. On both sides of the issue. So I don't need to be protected from any particular opinion - I want to hear them all.
-
My answer is pretty much like the others but for the sake of another data point - I make sure to eat a filling breakfast. Usually I don't need a snack before lunch but if my day starts extra early for some reason I do. In that case it's one of the following: • Almonds • Energy bar • A piece of fruit - usually an apple,…

I'm 5'4" and my goal range is 125-130. That's the weight I was in high school, when I was playing basketball and softball. Now I'm 55 but still like to be be active - hiking, bicycling, and starting to do a little weight lifting and running. So my goal weight is as much about what I can do as how I look. I'm also quite…

I agree. In fact the whole reason I bought an HRM was because Map My Fitness thought fast was hard (more calories) and slow was lazy (fewer calories). That's only true on a flat bike ride. Now I sync my HRM to Digifit and get much better results.

I prefer solo too. As you might guess from my user name, I get into a zone when exercising, whether it's weights or cardio or a hike. It's as good for my mental health as my physical health. I don't mind hiking or cycling with others occasionally but most of the time I want it to be alone time. Just me and my personal…
