I use cycling as an additional calorie burning exercise to my Mon-Fri gym sessions. I burn 30-35 calories per mile cycling and I'm averaging 15-16mph. Rides vary in length from 20 miles to 70 miles. When running i used to burn around 100 cals per mile but could only ever run for a max of 6 miles due to time and fitness…

As an amateur cyclist who started longer rides in Jan 17, I am often shocked by the lack of hi-viz that cyclists wear. I always have either hi viz yellow vest or hi viz pink on when cycling but the number of riders who zip around wearing black or red or blue outfits and they really can't be seen clearly especially against…

Make sure you aren't inadvertently eating more 'because you are jogging'. Exercise burns up way fewer calories than most of us think!

OP are you scared of success? I do the same as you and think this is the reason I do it. If I lose the weight (and keep it off!!) then I have to find another reason why my husband of over 20 years didnt want me any more and maybe thats too scary to face. Therefore I make it so I WONT lose the weight and wont have to face…

Benchmark is a starting point! Dont beat yourself up just focus on each week getting a bit stonger and fitter so when you get to your 4 week and 8 week benchmarks your stats are better! Good luck - it really is worth doing :-)

I had one of these days on Sunday - it wasn't just that I couldnt stop, I simply didnt want to. anything I could find went in my mouth from vegetables to fruit to sweet things to salad I just kept eating. I was reacting to a stressful and emotional weekend and tiredness and all sorts. So those of you lucky enough never to…

I get up at 4.30am to get in an hour at the gym before walking the dogs, doing mum stuff and heading off for work by 8am. I just dont have the time or energy after work and the gym is always packed then anyway - plus I'm usually doing something rugby related outside after work! It helps that i've always been an early riser…

i used to run cross country with mine so they were off the lead - i didn't like it when they ran on the lead as I couldn't use my arms the way i liked to when running! Most useful command i taught them was 'back' so they kept behind me in situations where I needed them close but not close enough to put on the lead!…

I struggled with my form for squats and found the easiest way to get it right was to do box squats ie squat onto a bench then stand straight up. Started with a 10kg dumbbell and progressed rapidly to 22.5kg. now squatting sets of 8 total of 45kg on a barbell and all within about a month! And my back hasnt hurt at all and…

I have been amazed at how the fat around my stomach and hips has reduced from not only cutting out the standard biscuits, cakes, crisps, chocolate etc but also following the rule of only eating bread/potatoes/rice/pasta/cereal when i have earned it through exercise ie for breakfast (I workout at 5am). From your profile pic…

I haven't been losing weight for the past few weeks so worked out my average daily calories over 7 days (Friday - Thursday) and found that my weekends 'just going over my target' were actually sabotaging me and bringing my daily average intake up to 25% more than it should be! Maybe you should watch the weekend cheat meal?

Mrs blobby 14 lbs 4.30am alarm call for gym by 5am - I run the mile to the gym (smug face!)

From someone who spent the last couple of years saying almost exactly the same "Im going to the gym every day for over an hour but not losing weight" - its your food intake that is to blame. Track everything. Stick to 1400 calories per day = EVERY DAY!! EVERY WEEK! High protein, low starchy carbs, plenty of veg, reasonable…

spritey86 - I am going through something similar as last summer my husband of 21 years and I separated and are now starting the divorce process. Although its all amicable and no one else is involved for either of us, we were also moving house and my eldest son was joining the forces and leaving home so the last few months…

Oh and I really recommend the Hartleys sugar free jelly pots - they are only about 8 calories but really help to satisfy the 'need' for something sweet!!

Been there, Done that!! And I bet you aren't hungry when you are mindlessly eating all those biscuits and kit kats and stuff?!! But the key word there is MINDLESSLY! The only way I have started to conquer my overeating is to literally ask myself "Am I ok with putting this into my mouth when I know I will feel bad? If the…

Rachel - I've been in your situation so many times and only this year at the ripe old age of 47 have I finally learnt to control my eating rather than it control me. Its been a gradual process over the course of about a year but started quite simply really. I decided to give up chocolate and crisps for Lent so whenever I…

I have made so many similar posts over the past 5 years and each time had to face the fact that my lack of success came down to one thing - overeating! Yes I told myself I was tracking and eating well but being brutally honest I was doing it for a day or two then going back to my old habits. Only this month have I finally…

I had a day yesterday when I was so miserable that (for once!) I had no appetite - I forced some Greek yoghurt and a banana down about 8pm and was drinking tea and coffee throughout the day but still only had 750 cals in all. So long as its only a one (or two) days that this goes on for, surely its not the end of the…

I have issues with emotional eating - like other posters have said its easier if there just isnt any junk in the house to biinge on. But when craving stuff and i'm at the shops, i pick it off the shelf and say (in my head of course!) "I am making the decision to buy this chocolate/bag of sweets/biscuits in the knowledge…

For heavens sake please be kind to yourself!! You and your poor body had a baby only a couple of months ago and you are already restricting the nourishment it needs to rebuild and strengthen again! I had 3 children and can honestly tell you to be patient - yes you will have a flabby belly, yes you will have those stubborn…

my PT suggested to me that I (47 year old female) started cutting back/out my starchy carbs unless I had just exercised. The theory is (and yes, its a theory which may or may not work but I'm giving it 6 weeks!) is that if they arent used immediately to either provide or replace energy, your body stores starchy carbs…

Maybe you just dont need to lose the last 8lbs. If you are working out a lot then your weight for your height sounds ideal! I am 5ft 9" and can only dream of being in the 150's rather than the 170's that I am now! I know its my fault for overeating and yes I log everything but the most important lesson I have learned over…

My periods have become MUCH less painful since a started taking an iron tablet daily.

I exercise first thing - usually in gym by 5am, home by 7 then prepping myself for work and kids for school, putting dinner in slow cooker, work 9-5. Tue, Wed, Thurs evenings currently taken up with rugby coaching, but im so tired atm due to rubbish diet that im exhausted by the time evening comes around. Once we move I…

Thanks for all your comments - I guess i'm lucky that I'm at an age (46) where being in mixed areas really doesn't bother me - I get on with what I need to and hardly notice anyone else, male or female! I can understand how it would bother some people - my mother would rather die than visit a mixed gym but she is nearly 70!

I go to the gym at 5am and am often the only woman there with anything from 1 to 8 men! Very frequently I'm the only female in the free weights area and just get on with it. It helps that I'm a middle aged old bag and the men are only in their 20s so technnically young enough to be my son but we all laugh and joke together…

If you can find the will (or the breath!) you could always pause and say "Yes, I acknowledge that I'm overweight but at least I am exercising to change that. There's no cure for stupidity so youre stuck being the way you are" and just plod on! However if they are anything like the teenagers around my way the minute you…

Surely the key to all exercise when pregnant is not to start anything NEW!! I drew gasps of horror from my friends when I confessed to still riding every day when pregnant with my first child but the midwife said that because I had been doing that for many years it would be no problem. (had to stop at 20 weeks because I…

To OP - I recommend the couch to 5k program - even if you are an experienced runner as it will help you increase your speed. dcaldwell446 - do what you like! There isnt a should or shouldnt! But again, couch to 5k is a good starter program.
