It's funny how moderate carb people are strawmen'd as people who eat twinkies by SOME dogmatic low carbers. Fortunately, most low carb advocates are alot more sensible. To the OP. Congratulations on your incredible start! I think i've found my carb level sweet spot, which is a pretty low for my activity level, but I'm a…

Deep, deep inside me there is a skinny person. Anyone got a problem with that?

Taubes would have you believe that calories don't matter. Please don't listen to him! Low carbs diets are an effective tool, especially for people who are carb senstive, but the dynamic behind the weight loss is still due to a caloric deficit. Heck, I've lost tons of weight going low carb also and if I weren't carefully…

Athletic performance generally suffers on a low carb diet if you don't cycle in some carbs before the workout or event.

You asked the question, "What was their criteria, what did they study, who did the study?" and I provided you with the link to the answers. What's with the hostility? Take it easy....and I apologize if you mis-took my friendliness for sarcasm.

Perhaps that is the beauty of WW....it focuses on the singular thing that matters with weight loss, ie. calorie restriction. If people would just understand that, they'd understand that a lot of these 'time-travel' diets, or diets based on insulinogenic manipulation are just tricks to make you consume less calories.

It's all there within the link, my friend. :) http://health.usnews.com/best-diet/articles/2011/06/06/best-diets-methodology-how-we-rated-them I was pretty impressed with the study. DASH diet scored best for overall diet as well as for diabetes, WW for weight loss, Ornish for heart healthy, etc.
-
Make sense to me that WW would win. A caloric deficit is the key to weight loss and that is exactly what the WW plan provides with no frills or fancy eating plans. With that said, I don't think there is anything wrong with going vegan or paleo or any of those other eating plans since they have their own benefits in…

Think "what would Pat Summitt do?"

My first thought would be, "be safe... make it a long engagement" But if he's an otherwise good fiancee, I would say, "make him feel secure". I know that might not seem fair, but isn't part of any good relationship the ability to help each other overcome their weak points?

Although this article has been shredded to bits by the IF community, particularly Alan Aragon, just thought I'd post it because I personally derive an important conclusion from this study. Namely, increased meal frequency will not help weight loss, but for SOME people, it can help curb hunger. After experimenting with IF a…

I would make my largest meal occur right after my workout. However, you'd be really splitting hairs and are getting into areas like calorie partitioning. As for the people arguing over meal frequency, my take on that is that splitting your total food intake over 6 meals per day can be beneficial in certain situations. As…

OK, you make some good points, but you are now actually making a different argument. Now you are saying that a true clean diet can only be sustainable via an organic vegan raw diet due to practical considerations should 'everyone' try to adopt that type of eating plan as well as quality control issues. Well, I agree with…
-
I believe the same can be said about produce. Depending on how far one wants to take "clean eating", there is an abundance of grass fed, free-range animals available. To the OP: I'm not a big fan of the Paleo-diet, but I do acknowledge that it would be a good place for a person who wants to change her diet to begin.

Coffee, black... I drink about 6-8 cups of it per day.

+1 When losing weight, people generally lose a percentage of fat as well as muscle. Eating a high protein diet while in a caloric deficit helps spare muscle loss. It also helps with satiety and helps maintain your metabolism. One of my biggest surprises when setting up a high protein diet was the challenge of eating ALL…

Those kinds of comments ARE very annoying, but I've gotten used to them and just try to shrug them off as friends and family being concerned about your well-being. Not everyone understands the type of dedication it takes to reach certain levels of fitness.

A good first step toward reducing your carb intake would be to based your meals on fresh, lean meats and cruciferous vegetables. Eggs are obviously fine..cottage cheese (unflavored) is fine. Milk is OK too, depending on just how low you want to go with your carb intake.
-
Good post bcattoes! If I could make weight loss as simple as I possibly could, I would say: -Focus on the caloric deficit. -Get plenty of protein. Doesn't get any simpler than that.
-
Protein bars, while convenient, do not provide the most bang for the calorie buck. Egg whites, chicken breast, 96% ground beef, lean fish fillets, shrimp, low carb protein shakes, beef jerky, low- fat greek yogurt (non-flavored).. all I can think of at the moment. Ahh, just thought of another... lean cuts of pork... one of…
-
Fact? Studies where calories are rightly controlled show that as long as protein is adequate, long-term weight loss between low carb and moderate carb diets result in similar weight loss.
-
A one-size-fits-all mentality is the wrong approach to take. A person’s ideal macronutrient breakdown is largely determined by what the person’s goals are as well as their individual biological characteristics, such as sensitivity to carbs. Also, mainstream science when it comes to nutrition is pretty conservative and…

Insulin will prevent the body from burning fat, but that doesn't mean your body isn't still burning energy. It still is...just in the form of carbs. One thing that Taubes overlooks in his book is that obese people tend to grossly underestimate their caloric intake. If these subjects reduce or even remove carbs they tend to…
-
As long as you are consuming sufficient amounts of protein, then it doesn't make a difference in terms of weight gain/loss. However, honestly speaking, I think when people consume junk carbs or any other type of junk food, they grossly underestimate the amount of calories consumed.
-
Saturated fats aren't bad for you. Avocadoes are LOADED with saturated fats. Fish also have a decent amount of sat fats. We really need to get off the line of thought where saturated fats are bad for you because it is simply not true. I do agree that the vast majority of processed foods and fast foods are bad though....

There will always be minor variations in weight from day to day...most of it involving water-weight. It's possible that you took in slightly more sodium that day (like perhaps the handful of popcorn?). I wouldn't fret over 6 ounces. But I agree with some of the other posters. The diet you described doesn't resemble…

Some misleading stuff on that website. When in a ketogenic state, one would assume that plenty of protein was being consumed. To the OP: If you are keeping carbs under 50g, then yeah, satisfying your caloric target will be a challenge (the true dynamic behind why low carb diets work). I'm also on a low carb diet, but not…
-
Fortunately, diets that aren't too extreme and result in weight loss generally result in improved health markers.
-
Correction... if you do not consume carbohydrates, your body is in a much more efficient state to burn FAT. Your body is always burning energy and simply modulates between getting its energy from fat or carbs....depending on what you eat. When there aren't any carbs around, your body will burn fat. When carbs are ingested,…

Since my target daily protein level is 233 grams, I would probably go with beef jerky. All these snack suggestions are making me hungry!
