  • If you consider expeller pressed soybean oil to be healthier than butter, by all means....eat away at this stuff. It's amazing how the notion of saturated fats being evil is so deeply ingrained. Never mind that there are many different types of sat fats, several of which do some very good things to do the body. I never…
  • Butter is cream derived from milk. Sorry but to call these two products "basically butter w/healthy fats instead of bad fats" is a bit misleading.
  • Well, I think that is debatable too because the importance of calorie deficit vs. protein intake is highly context dependent, but I think the OP gets the gist of what we're talking about. I think both are very important...along with a good training program.
  • OK, then why don't you explain to me exactly what she asked? The title of the thread is "burn fat, not mucle?" and in her post she asked, "How can one be sure they are burning fat during their weight loss/work outs and not muscle?" So, what exactly am I missing here? Is she not asking how to lose weight while minimizing…
  • Well then you can use the same reasoning when viewing her daily calorie deficit. How do you know her daily caloric deficit is too high? Since you say that if her protein level is already at 25-35%, then protein doesn't need to be increased. Well then by that same reasoning, if her daily caloric deficit isn't too high, then…
  • Cheat days do help normalize your metabolic hormones, but not nearly as effectively as maintaining healthy habits and simply eating a lot of starchy, but healthy carbs for a day. To put it in very general terms, a planned cheat day is more for psychological reasons. A carbohydrate refeeding day is to help stave off…
  • Eat whatever you want, but do it in moderation. How about that for simplicity?
  • Agree 100%. Protein is extremely important to sparing lean body mass when on a caloric deficit. Maintaining a reasonable AVERAGE daily caloric deficit is important too, but you'll be compromising your efforts if you don't eat enough protein. Of course, the number one determinant will be your genetics, but the methods we…
  • Kwon Sang Woo... As for my gf, she's 5'4", 100 lbs, shredded physique. Her body already puts most Asian actresses to shame... lucky me!
  • And therein lies the huge confound. High insulin secretion tends to make people eat more. Studies of diabetics find that decreasing insulin secretion with drugs tends to cause a spontaneously lower food intake. Taubes, in his highly misleading book, makes the assumption that obese people eat the same number of calories as…
  • Actually, that sounds like a contradiction. How can one say that it isn't the calories, but instead it is the high GL foods which cause overeating? Well, if a person is overeating, then it obviously IS the calorie level.
  • Depends on when your last meal was.
  • Yes, thank you very much! Excellent post! "So over the past 40 or so years, the rate of obesity has almost TRIPLED. I just can't see how that is due to some kind of seismic shift in our genes. Rather, we eat very, very differently than we did before, and we don't get as much physical activity." Repeated again for truth...
  • I read Taubes' book a few years ago. While I recognize his contribution to the science of dieting and weight loss, his position on insulin playing a larger role in body composition than calories is a load of C R A P. Delve deeper into his research and you'll see that he cherry-picks his data and ignores the one thing that…
  • LOL!! I could just picture her doing something like that too. My favorite show is the Iron Chef. The Japanese host really cracks me up. I love to drool over their fabulously awesome kitchens too. I always wonder what it would be like to cook in one of those kitchens....similar to the way some people wonder what it's like…
  • It works well for the thousands of people who do Rippetoe's Starting Strength program....but then again, most of them are quite young. I definitely think 2000 calories per day for a person of your physique and training regiment is too low. Keep us posted on how it goes!
  • I stopped drinking mother's milk in high school. It just wasn't able to satisfy my growing body.
  • I don't drink milk... and I'm not trying to justify my diet. I just find the subject interesting.
  • Larabars are not the problem here. If you have been tracking total calories properly and the only change you've made is going to a primal/paleo eating plan and your weight loss has stalled, it most likely because you aren't carb sensitive. It sounds like you belong to a relatively smaller but lucky group of people who do…
  • It happens to guys too! I'm 5'10" and have been hovering around 155 for a while now. When people find out I'm trying to get to 150 or below, they start to say things. I like to think they are just trying to be helpful and are concerned, but either way, it gets annoying after a while.
  • Well, with a few notable exceptions throughout history, we don't kill and carve up our moms into steaks either, do we? Is carving up and eating a juicy filet mignon steak any less natural than eating food that was meant for baby cows?
  • Sure, except the average male naturally produces far more estrogen each day than you'd get from consuming gallons of dairy milk. The amout of estrogen you get from milk really isn't a concern.... Soy milk, on the other hand, should probably be eaten in moderation for men....just to be on the safe side.
  • Yeah, because information compiled by an animal rights activist is a lot more reliable.
  • That happens to me when I load up on a lot of starchy carbs. I feel full, but at the same time, I still feel hungry. Consider reducing (not eliminating!!) the amount of starchy carbs, increase your veggies and as a previous poster mentioned, increase protein.
  • So if I maintain a daily calorie deficit of 500 every day for the next three years, will I disappear?
  • Yeah right, because we guys don't care about how we look.
  • Have you tried reducing starchy carbs/sugar or gluten?
  • I love goat cheese, feta, and brie! Getting hungry just thinking about it!
  • Isn't that what people said about the tobacco companies? BTW, I felt a bit nauseous after going through that list.
