  • I'm in Florida and the summer temps are usually in the high 90s F with extremely high humidity. I just run anyway. It is much more difficult and the pace is definitely slower, but I look at those days as the hard training days. If you can run in that, the fall weather feels like heaven when it finally rolls around. I just…
  • Anything higher than a half-marathon is a long distance run to me. Up to that seems fairly doable. Anything higher requires tons of commitment in terms of time and education. I'm currently training for my first half.

  • I love this point. People don't seem to realize how much chemicals and genetic engineering have helped us to live longer and to sustain our increasing population. Basically, we have it so good that we have to make things up to worry about.
  • Cult-like? I'm not sure how a privately owned business setting it's own rules is in any way comparable to a religion. Now that I think about it..... If you think of the established gym culture as the primary religion, then PF probably would be considered a cult. That would explain why they are considered so heretical.
  • That makes sense. That is why it bugs me when people crap on PF for trying to create a specific environment. I'm fine with CrossFit culture.. or any other gym culture. It's just not necessarily my culture, and I'd rather it not invade my space. PF has created a space that tries to keep that from happening. Before you get…
  • I'm 48. About a year and a half ago, I started running for the first time since I was in my early 30's. Back then, I never went further than 3 or 4 miles, and that was only for a very short time. I was never really a runner. Until now. Last Spring I did a 15K and finished in the middle of the crowd. I did several 5ks as…
  • I didn't stereotype anyone. I described a behavior that is likely to be frowned upon at a Planet Fitness.
  • This is simply untrue of my PF. They do not police what you can lift. They have lots of mirrors specifically so you can check your form, and although they do have a dress code, it is not over-restrictive at all. Sleeveless seems to be completely acceptable, and hot pants are everywhere. If by "get into your workout", you…
  • My PF in Pensacola, Florida is great. I have seen none of the "profiling" I hear mentioned on this site. It looks like the membership is truly a cross section of the community. I see muscle bound people there, and obese people there. Everyone seems very nice and respectful. I have no complaints whatsoever and highly…
  • I practically live on turkey burger. My favorite is to get the 93/7 ground turkey and fry it seasoned with garlic and a lot of Mrs Dash. Cook it very quickly so it burns the spices a little bit. I then make a sandwich just like I would a hamburger. To me, cheddar cheese is a nice touch on that sandwich. An alternative that…
  • I cut a muffin in half last night. It can be done. If you aren't at a point where you can do that, the best thing you can do is make sure you don't bring anything like that into your house. It is much easier to say no in the grocery store than it is in the house. I'm guessing your parents simply didn't keep that much junk…
  • I like the way you presented your before and after. Great job! Both on the lifestyle change and the presentation.
  • They're great, but Pure Protein bars are cheaper and to me taste better. Also, they are more readily available at stores like Target and Walmart. I can't live without my Pure Protein bar for breakfast!
  • I was down for a couple of months with a knee injury and I wasn't nearly at the level you are. I feel your frustration though. Some gyms have the "hand" exercise bike type machines that help with cardio, but I think swimming and especially rowing are great ideas. You may TRY out the bike and/or other cardio equipment at…
  • It takes me two miles of 10 mph running to burn 200 calories. Or 20+ minutes on the exercise bike at a pretty heavy intensity. It seems to me like house cleaning might not burn up as much as you might think.
  • If you were following a plan before, simply get back to the plan. One day off (or 3 or 4) shouldn't destroy a long-term plan. It is simply time to get back to normal. Everyone deserves a day off once in a while. I think the fasting might be hurting you. I'd try to just eat a reasonable caloric intake so as to avoid crazy…
  • I fully plan to meet or exceed that calorie number! One day a year isn't going to ruin me. And it's oh so yummy!
  • Why does everyone keep calling her Shurley?
  • Stop (or greatly reduce) the weight training, and get into more cardio....and eat more.
  • I don't even know what size I am now. I've lost 30 lbs and three belt notches. My current pants are VERY baggy. I'm holding off until I reach my goal until I try any new pants on. I don't want to spend the money on clothes I'll only wear for a month or two. I'm really hoping to fit into the pants size I wore when I…
  • Saturday is my rest day. The rest of the week I alternate between gym and running. If something starts hurting in a way I know is unhealthy, I take an extra day. I think you are wise to take today off. It's better than giving yourself an injury that could take you out for weeks or even months.
  • I almost choked on my morning coke when I read this. Note to self: you never know when something will literally make you laugh out loud.
  • EVERYTHING! Cheesecake Factory is the highest level of temptation. It is the epitome of large-portion awesomeness. Don't cheapen the experience by eating light. Let this be a one-time event and enjoy it to the fullest. Then get back on the plan tomorrow. We don't have a Cheesecake factory within a 4 hour drive of my house.…
  • Agreed. Once in a while, it's ok to go crazy. The funny thing is, you'll probably find that you can't eat as much as you used to anyway. 3 months of a better diet can make big changes to your appetite and stomach capacity (Note: I have no idea of the science of this, but I do know it takes a lot less now days to make me…
  • Works every time!
  • The snoring! I didn't expect the snoring to stop. My wife is very happy.
