So.... I tried the mini-cans and they worked out great. But then last week I tried my first Coke Zero. There will be no turning back! Those things are awesome! Thanks everyone for the advice.

Awesome! I hope to join the 13.1 club in March.

Have you considered roller-jousting? I hear it is the best of both worlds!

I ain't skeered of BPA's, aspertame, gluten, or monsters under my bed. Life is far too short to get caught up in pseudo science hysteria. Seriously, I'm not sure Cheryl Crow really has the scientific credentials necessary to influence my eating/drinking habits. Here's a fun link for you:…

You're on the right track now. From what I've read on this site, all you really need to do is stick with it. It's hard to not get discouraged, but the best motivation I can imagine is looking at the success stories here at MFP. Thinking about the before/after picture you will have someday sounds like a great way to keep…

The whole gluten thing is what confounds me. Yes, some tiny percentage of people have a sensitivity to it, but that doesn't mean we have to apply it to everyone. If we apply the same logic, we should all avoid milk and peanuts too. ~Scott

I couldn't agree more. The sad reality is, it just doesn't make good TV to show video of people not eating. Showing them sweating and crying is much more entertaining. They VERY MUCH downplay the obvious fact that they are severely restricting the diets of the contestants. ~Scott

Perhaps another picture...standing would help people out. The one you posted could be creating some kind of illusion that people are reacting to.

I've always like fats...and carbs..... The trick is to NOT EAT TOO MUCH of anything. This article just confirms what I already believed. ~~ Scott

I wouldn't recommend making such a drastic dietary change in this critical time before a race. If I were you, I would postpone my low carb diet until after the half-marathon. ~Scott

Super!

I was massively intimidated the first time I went to a gym. I literally sat in the car for half an hour trying to get the courage up to go in and ask someone to give me a tour....and this was at Planet Fitness, the least intimidating gym around. On my first day, I was so self conscious that people were watching the "dork"…

http://rw.runnersworld.com/smartcoach/ The "Smart Coach" at Runner's World charges a fee of $4.99 per month. The best I can tell is that it's a 19.95 four-month buy in. It may be worth it, but I'd bet there are plenty of free resources out there you could use if this is too pricey for you (as it is for me). ~Scott

Face/neck first, then moobs, then some kind of thin layer all over my arms, fingers, legs, etc... Last is gut. Grrrrrrr! ~Scott

Obviously, TV is a little too demanding. I don't see any weight in the picture you could lose.

For calorie counting and nutrition tracking, I don't think you can beat the My Fitness Pal app associated with this website. The usefulness of the ability to simply scan a bar code to input your quantity cannot be overstated. The charts and tracking are also very helpful and relatively simple to understand. I also like it…

I have two emergency foods I eat when I'm really hungry. 1) Hershey's Bliss dark chocolates. 35 calories each. Just pop one in my mouth and let it slowly dissolve. Never chew. It really staves off the hunger. 2) Unsalted Peanuts. High calories, but not if you only eat 6 or 8. Eat them one at a time and really savor the…

I had to turn down my FAVORITE kind of cookie the other day when a co-worker really pressured me to eat some, "just to get rid of them". Thankfully, I survived the assault! It's tough, but in the end, just say no.

Arm bands are terribly uncomfortable to me. I keep my phone in my front pocket when I workout and/or run. I wear loose running shorts and make sure I always purchase shorts that have a big pocket. I use bluetooth earbuds so I don't have to deal with the cord. Also, if it looks like rain, I put the phone in a ziploc bag.…

Exactly! And have water with your meal. That can help keep the calorie count down a little.

A better diet and a some exercise always help me to sleep better and go to sleep more easily. Weigh loss has also helped me sleep better through the night since I'm not snoring as much now (Much to my wife's relief!). ~Scott

Wow, I was not expecting ANYONE to tell me just drink the dang thing! And nearly everyone has. I truly appreciate the insight. It had never occurred to me that I shouldn't worry about switching to something "healthier". I really like the suggestion of the mini-cans. That way I can still have my "fix" and not blow through…

Holy crap! That is awesome. I'm amazed time after time how lives can change when we put our minds to it. Great job!

I breather in and out of my mouth and nose at the same time when I'm running....I have no idea how many paces I take, but I do try to keep the breaths slow and deep.

Ok, I get it. TLDR doesn't really mean Too Long Didn't Read. It means Skimmed, Not Worth Reading In Detail. Just like LOL doesn't really mean Laughing Out Loud. Getting a little off point now....I think I'll move on...LOL.....
-
Ummm....If it was TL (Too Long): DR (Didn't Read), then how would someone know how well it was written? I agree that it was not written terribly well and was full of unsubstantiated declarations, but many people (not all) said they didn't read it because it was too long. If their problem is content or quality of writing,…

I was thinking the same thing. Recently I read a post equally as long that was packed full of good scientific information and the OP was praised by all for it. I don't really understand the double-standard where length is concerned.

I wish we had a "like button!

I did read your entire post. I wouldn't comment otherwise. I think you may have been a little extreme in some of you conclusions, but I do agree with you in some aspects. I hadn't heard that lifting was the new holy grail. I've always heard and still do hear that cardio will burn off the most calories and thus contribute…

I'm down with a mild knee injury myself. The Half-marathon I wanted to do is in November, and I've reluctantly resigned myself to not running it. Now I'm setting my sights on a February 15k and then a half-marathon in March. I've had two injuries as a result of doing too much too fast, and I'm not going to make that same…
