  • congrats!!!!!
  • You're not missing much, i've had it and i can't stand the consistency - and i love me some avocado. I get a 6in veggie and ask for LOTS of every veggie (except olives), and one swipe of yellow mustard. I've heard of people ordering a foot long veggie and then putting all the veggies into one 6 in, but I've found if you…
  • Enrollment wasn't impacted by the 4/16 tragedy and won't be affected by this. Virginia Tech is an amazing community, the hokie nation is proud and strong, and acts of senseless violence will only strengthen our resolve to provide education to our youth and research for a better future. Blacksburg is my hometown, and I'm a…
  • Good running shoes, get fitted at a running store!!!! = essential. I was too shy to get fitted at a store so tried to figure out what my stride was on my own - ended up wearing the completely wrong shoes and really hurting myself. Now I'm in physical therapy, haven't run in weeks and can barely walk. And all I really want…
  • Yep, commando is way more comfy.
  • I herniated a disc in my neck in september, and have not resumed strength training yet. However, I have been in physical therapy 2xweek since october, and just recently went to once a week. My dr and physical therapist don't think i'm ready to resume upper body strength training quite yet, and said when I am they will work…
  • I would also recommend talking to your doctor about the amount of swelling/water retention you may experience, so you can be aware that you may gain a few pounds of water weight during your recovery. But I would think the important stuff is making sure you are eating good stuff to fuel your recovery. I'm in a similar…
  • My favorite family tradition growing up, which we still do today w/my parents, is decorating the tree on xmas eve (I think it's a german tradition, but not sure). Then my dad makes greasy scrambled eggs. It makes xmas eve so much more special, and my mom keeps the tree up for the twelve days of xmas. When we were kids, my…
  • Great job!
  • I'm also interested in the body media fit thing but not sure I want to drop that type of money. But I've been on a plateau for about 3 months now so I'm thinking it might be nice to really now what my BMR and daily activity levels are.
  • I got mine done in 2001 - and I still love it. I gained a bunch of weight in the years following the surgery, so my boobs got bigger, but I still liked the shape/perkiness sooooo much better than before. And, now that I've been losing weight, my boobs have gotten a lot smaller again - and I still love the shape! My issues:…
  • I average around 10-15 mi/wk, but I only run 3x, typically one easy, shorter run, one tempo medium distance, and one longer distance. I cross train the other days, with spin classes 2x and the elliptical + yoga on my "easy" days. I used to also do strength training 2x but I've got an neck injury so I'm off that until the…
  • I do both - I prefer to run outdoors, but I live in a pretty hilly and windy area, so sometimes the weather sucks so I run on the treadmill, or I when I want to just zone out and run fast while listening to my ipod. But I usually only make it about 30 minutes before I start to lose interest and have to fight to go longer.…
  • My personal suggestion is to work up the endurance first. And do it slowly! Your speed may improve once you have the endurance and confidence, but you gotta log the miles first. Be careful - it's addicting!!
  • Congrats!!!! I'm running a half this weekend (my 3rd), and I'm going to remember your story if (when) I start whining about my pain/discomfort.
  • I needed this this morning! I'm also on a plateau - been gaining/losing 3lbs for nearly 2 months. I was just about to get really down about it, and this thread helped me maintain my spirits. I especially liked the post about this being practice for maintaining! But I also realized, in that same time, I have: moved,…
  • I love my HRM. I love having more confidence in my calorie count. MFP and machine calculators can't measure the intensity of your effort; HRMs do. I also appreciate knowing when I can push myself harder during a workout. Mine has definitely been worth the $75.
  • I also suggest getting a HRM if you really want an accurate count of calories. Definitely worth the investment! Also, when I'm trying to determine how many calories to eat back, I also take into account how many calories I would have burned just sitting there. For example, my BMR (basal metabolic rate) tells me I burn…
  • I've heard it takes awhile to get used to foam rollers, so I'd suggest to keep at it, but within reason - don't push it if it's too painful. I've yet to consistently use mine to work past the soreness issues.
  • I had the opposite situation - my nails used to split but now that I'm eating more veggies and taking vitamins they are so much stronger and healthier. Specifically, I'm taking a daily multi-vitamin, fish oil, and glucosamine.
  • Rest days are important! Your body has been working hard and needs some time to recover. If you feel like you have to do something, take a short, easy walk or do some gentle yoga. I too find it difficult to take rest days sometimes. But my workouts feel better, and my body feels better when I do.
  • Good job! I love spinning, with the right instructor and music it's such a good workout and stress reliever. And also, if it makes you feel any better, standing and pedaling on a spin bike is a bit easier than sitting, because you have your body weight to help you work the pedals. When you're sitting you use more muscle.
  • great job!!! what an inspiration, and how special that you got to share that with your son.
  • 9 more weeks til June! I've been super busy this week and haven't checked the forum since I last posted several days ago. Not sure I'll really have time to interact much, which sucks because I really would like to get to know y'all (i'm southern) better. Hopefully things will settle down a bit after next weekend. But just…
  • Yowzers I'm sore! I did one, measly, strength training circuit yesterday and am feeling it in a mostly good way today. I've been focusing on cardio for the past few months, and now I'm trying to incorporate weights back in to my routine. I had planned on starting with two circuits, but I went for a quick run prior and I…
  • I used to have similar rule, but decided I couldn't handle training for a half-marathon on a treadmill (too ADD). So I decided to invest in 1-2 sets of nice colder weather running clothes, and give it a try. And it was great! I think my coldest was 20, but we were also treated to some really nice, warmer days this winter…
  • I want in! My plan is a work in progress. I just started mfp, and counting calories again. I'm still trying to figure out my caloric goals. MFP is recommending 1200 cals/day, I think that's pretty low, so I may shoot for closer to 1500 and see what happens. These are my first goals: 1. Log food and workouts every day 2.…
  • I got divorced 3 years ago. It got really ugly; I had to change my phone number and cutoff contact due to harassment. I've dated a little but nothing serious, and I'm not really ready to put myself completely out there yet. It was a horrible process, but the best thing I ever did for myself, and one of my proudest…
