I think it depends on the type of foods you eat. Lean protein is good at filling you up for a long time - it uses a chunk of your calories, but I reckon it's worth it to feel full. That's really helpful, thanks everyone. Re. exercise - I went for a fairly fast-paced walk this morning, of somewhere around 3 miles. The Nike app on my iPod estimated a calorie loss of 297, but the MFP app reckoned it was around 420. Not sure which to believe, but I'm tempted to go with the lower one.
