I'm not exactly clear on what you're doing once you have the bar at waist level. If you're keeping a slight bend in your knees, but locked in that one position, and pushing your butt backward to lower the bar, then you're doing the Romanian DL. Are you wanting to compete? If not, quite worrying about your grip and use straps, you'll see huge gains in your lift immediately. Want to improve your grip...fine, target it with assistance work, but don't ruin your DL by limiting it to your grip strength.
