I live in Mudville, so we have no Ikea nearby. I can probably get the one off Amazon, though.

No, and I agree. I'm talking about when they are in human care. By contrast, animal rights supporters feel that animals should be free to live natural lives, that breeds created by human beings should die out entirely, and that there is no way that humans can treat animals in any way in which animals do not feel stressed…

I stand corrected! LOL

Okay, you have to understand animal rights in order to understand how they can use animal welfare to support the agenda. The stance of animal rights, as I said, is that animals are not ours to own or to use. In the animal rights view ALL domesticated animals are "enslaved" and in a state of suffering. It does not matter…

Yes, but you have to admit that it was not me who brought religion into the thread. I simply made the observation that I would let my partner know that the marriage was no longer on secure footing if s/he (in my case, he) made a life-altering decision for both people in the marriage, without me.

You're right. I am not paying for this divorce. If he wants the freedom to marry, then he needs to divorce me and he has no grounds. Dog in the manger? You betcha. You're wrong on the date, though, it wasn't 1996. As to having a meaningful relationship with someone? I have good friends. Marriage is unnecessary for me to be…

I'm not divorced. Maybe you missed that part. :) We've just lived in separate states since 2001, while he continues to live in our former home in a state of adultery. My point is that when a person makes a decision that changes the foundation upon which the marriage is built, there might be some blowback. The OP should…

One last time: "going vegetarian" is not the issue.

Okay, it's time for me to go do things with my day. I have paid writing to do and dogs who need feeding, bathing, and walking. However, before I go, I want to clarify a few things: 1) I am not talking about making a change from eating an omnivorous diet to a vegetarian diet for the heck of it or due to medical reasons. I…

Marriages entered into under false pretenses are not necessarily valid on their face. Neither are marriages entered into when one person is mentally ill (not saying that's the case here) necessarily valid on their face. I'm not a priest, neither am I a bishop; however, marriages break down every day and annulments are not…

ROFL Master of Arts in Professional Writing here, so I don't think I need your telling me about how to use an ellipsis (kudos on knowing what that form of punctuation is called, though). How do you know that I'm not leaving something out? ;) *shrugs* It depends. If a person is married believing that a person is one thing…

Dairy is excellent and is generally very good for you if you are one of the people who can digest it. I have my own dairy goat and have all the milk, soft cheese, and yogurt I can use--and I'll be making butter and buttermilk once I have an efficient way to separate cream, as well as lotions and soaps in the future. Not…

You're looking at it strictly from a dietary point of view. If a person is eating a vegan or vegetarian diet for so-called ethical reasons, then yes, that would be growing apart from someone who does not see eating meat as being unethical. Religious teachings would probably be behind me on this one, since wives are…

Don't like it? That's fine. We're not married. It's called "growing apart" and couples do it all the time. I don't see the value of staying in a relationship with someone who puts his/her needs above the good of the relationship. Been there, done that. I've already said that's a different matter.

I would let my partner know that option was on the table. If I don't share my partner's values and my partner feels content to make major lifestyle decisions to which s/he knows I will object AND has the audacity to tell me that I can sink or swim based on a decision s/he has made for us, there's already been a major…

Thank you for confirming that animal rights has nothing to do with a love of animals. But no, trot out the "exploitation" word and you've lost me. I don't have time for animal rights twaddle. If I were the husband, after all these suggestions of letting him cook for himself, letting him cook his own meat, cooking a portion…

I reserve about a half cup of milk for coffee every day--when the milk is gone, the coffee is done. I generally use about two tablespoons of milk in a cup of coffee, plus sweetener. I'm not European, but I don't "get" the whole high-calorie dessert-type coffee, either. Where does one find a battery-operated milk frother?…

This thread is not about veganism. However, it's interesting to see that your argument is that you "help" animals by not allowing them to be born in the first place. I'm trying to wrap my head around the "I love animals so I don't want them born" concept. Veganism and, to a lesser extent, vegetarianism is about control…

Why the [sic], since it's an accepted abbreviation for "for the record?" [sic] is used to identify an error that someone else has made, which now appears in a quote. As to being a "dumbed down" argument . . . well . . . yeah. The "ethical" argument that going vegetarian/vegan helps animals is pretty ridiculous, when you…

It's also pretty unfair to make a life-altering decision for both of you and then say, "oh well, eat what I make or learn to cook your own meals." Heck, it was YOUR decision. YOU made the decision to change, so the onus for making additional meals falls on YOU, not on him. FTR, eating vegetarian is no healthier for you…

It's one thing to miscalculate and be unable to finish and entirely another to purchase something planning to waste half. If you're going to do that, it makes more sense to me to buy a large bag at the store and portion it out to snack-sized bags at home. I understand that not everyone feels this way, but I'm on food…

I've never understood this kind of advice. If you're really nervous about eating the hot fries (I'm assuming the crispy treats from a bag), then veggie fries do sound like a reasonable alternative; however, they are surprisingly high in sodium and calories and are not as "healthy" as you might think they are. I survived my…

Not to be a language geek, but . . . pesticide, herbicide, and sucralose all have three syllables. ;)

I have a dog who knows that he is getting milk after I am done milking my goat. Twice a day, rain or shine, he gets his milk and, if I seem as if I am forgetting it, he will try to block my way out of the gate. He's all grown up and doesn't need it, either. All of my dogs love their milk, cheese, and whey. What most vegans…

There are plenty of diabetics out there who use sugar-free products and lose weight successfully. Some sugar-free products taste good, too, like no sugar added ice cream and spaghetti sauce. It's easier to find sugar-free/no-sugar-added products that taste pretty good now than it was even ten years ago or so.

What does pre-packaged food and sugar have to do with measuring and never splurging? Calories in/calories out if you want to lose weight. I do agree that the OP is probably close to her ideal weight--not sure why someone at 5'3" and 124 pounds would feel compelled to go much lower?

One of my favorite meals involves shrimp, onions, green peppers (or broccoli), and sometimes mushrooms steamed with garlic (or garlic powder) and served over polenta or brown rice. Add a small salad on the side, served with a vinaigrette dressing, and it pretty much ticks all the boxes.
