This is a good point to keep in mind. Even after my ride the other day, I kept the HRM on for a while just out of interest and the BPM rate took quite a while to drop down to rest levels, even though I relatively stationary and sipping water. I bet my quads were still burning more fuel than rest-state since they felt as if…

This happens almost everyone on a diet plan once in a while. Looking at the math... you overate by 1180. So, in fat pounds, *if* all that turned into fat, 1180/3500 = about 1/3 a pound gain. The scale won't even show that due to daily water weight fluctuations. Pffft. Nothing to worry about. Just move on and don't make a…

Good empirical test idea. If you do that, I, for one, would want to see the outcome. I'd do it myself, but I only have the one Garmin unit (which I just got) :)

Just read this due to your bump, TheBigYin. Really enjoyed your analysis and the discussion. So far I have been trying to play it safe and eat back 2/3 of what Strava tells me. Although I'm now just started uploading Garmin 500 data w/HRM & Cadence data to Strava. Not sure if Strava uses its own formula anyway or also uses…

I'm glad you posted your story for us to read. Keep up the great work. You look great too -- amazing progress. There is no turning back! Like others have said, I am also sorry to hear of your niece.

Some veggies have nutritional content made more available by some cooking. Carrots come to mind. Tomatoes are another. Here is a good article showing the pros and cons. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/raw-veggies-are-healthier/

^^This. In many state it is NOT illegal to record conversations. "One party consent." In others, all parties must agree. So what he did may, or may not be legal. Company policy is another issue outside of the above. There may be a policy in place that prohibits all recording. Thus, the situation may be that it was legal,…

OP: some food for thought... http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/08/twinkie.diet.professor/ Now, that said, I want to encourage you to eat healthy as you can while at school. :)
-
My goal is to be the last person alive that doesn't have one :) Do you think that will be non-conformist?
-
I don't know what school you are at but just going from my own memories of what college food was like, I'd say you can eat as healthy or as lousy as you want. For example, if I wanted turkey sandwiches on whole grain bread and salads with all kinds of veggies, that was available all the time. Grilled fish and pitas and…

Congrats! You look fit, man! Also, your talk about Little Italy and Pizza and stuff made me want to get some of that. Sigh. :)

You are right; I used it twice so far and I'm really liking it! It is also quite small compared to the other Garmin units. Since I still have the simple wired Trek and the Velo 9 still on my bikes, I am using those for just to view speed. That way the Garmin display is just showing other things I am interested in seeing.…

Good indicator of fluid loss...if it is more than a few pounds then you probably aren't drinking enough on the ride!

Thanks for posting this.

Yeah, I think I read the same story. People think you are a good rider if they see a helmet on you, so they pass closer on the average. Helmetless bikers are viewed as less predictable and idiotic, so the car drivers are more cautious. I guess I'm more worried about the drivers that are texting or drunk, or just not paying…

Just an update bump. Per TheBinYin's suggestion, I looked hard at the CatEye Stealth 50 setup with HRM and cadence. Almost pulled the trigger on that at it was so affordable, but...I finished a 3 month workout and health program at work that left me the following choices for promoting more exercise: $150 & a Fitbit unit or…

(Queue Yoda voice) "The hyperbole is strong with this one." I'll meet you 6.23% of the way there. Subway ingredients are meant to be affordable, so the quality is mediocre. One could do worse, I think, when grabbing a quick meal.

Yeah, that sandwich is basically a salad and bread. Not the worst thing you can eat on a diet for a meal! Makes it easy to track calories too. But aedreana, make sure you get some good protein in your other meals :) Personally, I think Jared's diet was a bit light on protein and, of course, fats. (So I wouldn't personally…

Right. And the key point is that it is what worked for him. It is important to find something that you can stick to.
-
Can you imagine what would happen if you ate Chinese food, then at exactly 59 minutes later, you quickly ate an apple? You would probably die from the sudden onset of amplified hunger pangs. That is all.

I read Jared's book on a whim. I wasn't expecting much, but it was a lot more interesting than I expected. Glad I read it as I felt it was an interesting story. I occasionally eat Subway too since I like the options there when I am working and need something on the road for lunch. In the book, Jared explains he was…

Maybe try starting out with some regular walking. 20 minutes a day? Just gets you into the habit and you can expand it from there. Also, you don't have to exercise to lose weight. It just makes it easier since it is another tool to affect your net calorie balance.

I tend to go for cheaper stuff overall; I do not have enough of sophisticated palate to enjoy the expensive stuff. Johnny Walker Red. I also like Jim Beam (the white label) and, lately, bottom shelf Evan Williams. Saving a lot of money with that! I think EW, especially when mixed with some coke or water on crushed ice is…

Bump. KJ, wondering if you figured this out or have you been logging all those TdF Challenge miles with the pain still there?

How about this... We burn hydrocarbons with the O2 you breath in. The resultant products are carbon dioxide and water. The CO2 is exhaled. The excess water, assuming your cells are fully hydrated to begin with, eventually exits the cells into the blood stream, adding to the volume of the blood. Most of this leaves the body…

Oh yeah, its a lot of fun! It is worth it, just something I didn't think about much when I wanted to get into that kind of riding. Just used to road riding where you don't need to bring a lot of "stuff" and you do not have to wash the bike off more than a couple times a season. Just got back from a short MTB ride this…

Sounds like an opportunity in the making! I like some of the suggestions here about saying something like, "Sure! He loves doing some service work on the side...it is something we are wanting to get into. Plus, we decided up front to give neighbors and friends 50% off! Shall I tell him to stop by so he can figure out and…

Hey, that is some interesting data, Singingsingletracker. And I'm getting intimidated by looking at my 60 watt light bulb just sitting here at my desk. By the way, I bet you sing better than the pros do when your biking tho. So that is something you got over them!

By the way... I am discovering that mountain biking in my area forest trails is a little bit of a PITA insofar as the post-ride stuff goes. I have to wash mud, grit, leaves and sticks and junk off the bike and out of the drivetrain and shoes/cleats/pedals each time which also means I have wipe down, dry, and re-lube…
