  • What I'm now thinking is I need "wet" oil based lube on the MTB, since it is so muddy and wet where I have been going I have to clean all the grunge off the bike every time and re-lube. Bought some Tri-flow to start with. Will use the "dry" lube on the roadie. That's the plan so far!

  • Great job, great results so far. You can really see the difference! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY! :)
  • Will try a Teflon dry lube on the road bike and see how it goes. Just ordered a bottle of Finish Line. I just re-lubed the mountain bike with oil after I rinsed off all the mud from my last ride. I had to get it ready as I am riding trails again tonight and the new stuff isn't here yet. As for chain cleaning, I usually…

  • I also use MMR and just let it push the calorie amount over to MFP. Well, it is just easier that way too, that way I do not have to manually add an entry. As for the difference, who knows which is closer to reality? Since MMR has access to more data about your ride (climbs, speed on segments), one could hope that it is a…
  • There is a whole Spongebob episode about this issue.
  • Oh yeah, I screw up sometimes when things are available that I love to especially eat too. Pizza and Chinese take-out are some of my triggers!! What usually works for me is to do an hour or so of cardio on the days I know I'll be eating those things. And a light breakfast and/or lunch. That way I can have 2 slices of…
  • OP, I do think it is particularly helpful to be fit in your line of work! Just like most doctors probably want to avoid being over weight or even obese as an example to their patients. However, as we well know, not all doctors are physically fit -- and some of them in that category are darn good professionals. MFP does…
  • I like this one Kit..that fisheye mirror is cool.

  • I've recently started running both at the same time. Does a number on the phone battery though. Strava has made lots of improvements and is older and more well known I think. The both seems to have made major strides in reliability and in accurate data capture. And, as you say, there are more courses, routes, and…
  • The last bit looks brutal!
  • By the way, who bothers to bring a heavy lock and lock up the bike when making such convenience stops for water and such? My road bike is old, so I usually don't bother, but the thought has crossed my mind someone might steal it anyway by just tossing it in the back of a pickup truck. What a pain to be stranded then.
  • Never ever seen or heard of those before reading your post, Yin :) The only things I remember that rubbed against my tire constantly was one of those "bottle" generators and the mechanical speedometer wheel I had on my setup as a kid.
  • ^^This. Also the recommendations for amounts in different countries is all over the place. If they want to call 8/wk heavy then so what. That is a glass of wine each night and maybe one extra on one night a week. http://www.forbes.com/sites/katiebell/2013/09/03/are-you-drinking-too-much-the-myth-of-moderation/ If the…
  • What kind of punctures? Thorns, glass, pinch flats, rim burrs or spoke related?
  • Good interview, I enjoyed reading it. But it makes it hard to look up to any pro-level cyclists and teams. Too bad the entire sport is so corrupted by the doping culture. Inga really explains the kind of pressure that is applied to one to go along with it. The catch-22 she was presented with and why she left cycling is…
  • Yeah, if they are hanging out around and under piles of wood, they might be Wolf spiders. Freaky looking. Large, they are. ([/i] said with a sage Yoda-like accent[/i]) But they aren't dangerous as their venom is much weaker than brown recluse.…
  • Every night, make yourself a milkshake with real, full fat ice cream and full-fat milk. Drink it. And eat a tablespoon of extra peanut butter with it. You problem will be solved IMO. :)
  • Well, I think it is great you did it :) Get some rest and recover!
  • This is such good advice. I've been trying to drop about 50-60lbs the past few years and started exercising regularly in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. Each year I would only lose 10 lbs and put it back on in the more inactive time for me in the winter. Calorie intake is the more important and easier to adjust part of the…
  • Used to love that aspect in my teens, twenties, and early 30s. I was always thin and could eat almost anything I liked!! For a guy that loves food, and things like pizza, cheeseburgers, ribs, and beer, that was heaven. But, yep, it changes. :) BTW, the 80s was fun haha :) Not just the unlimited foods!
  • I should try it despite the bad roads excuse sometime. Check this guy out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d93O0hjk_RE 40 miles each way, but it only takes him 30 minutes longer to do it than via commuter train. BTW, did you end up biking into work today, BusyRae?
  • I'm glad you reconsidered, OP :) Edible mushrooms are very good for you, low cal, and good source of hard to get minerals and such. I was worried that your yard mushroom might be immature deathcaps which can look like the safe button kind from the store! "Food" for thought:…
  • IMO, it is not worth the risk without knowing for sure. Yeah, if you know of an expert that you trust, then show them. Otherwise...what are you saving? Maybe five or ten dollars on mushrooms at most you know are safe from the supermarket? :)
  • Good luck BusyRae -- and you are lucky you have a paved bike path that heads in the workplace direction! My commute would be about 23 miles, with only about 5 of them being on a no cars walking/biking trail. About 10 miles of it is along some 50mph car roads with no shoulders. Hills galore too. I could cut out some of the…
  • Nice pics and it looks like it was a serene place to do some riding! Looked like a storm brewing in the distance? I love the jersey! Also, good thing you didn't get your spokes all smashed up like my poor road bike ;)
  • I recall Jared Fogel (that Subway dude) lost about 240 lbs in a year eating 18 inches of wheat sandwich bread daily, along with some veggies and turkey. Seems the main caloric food in his meals was bread, but he was in calorie deficit daily. YMMV.
  • From your post, I think you sound ready to change and regain your athleticism, Missy. Just remember that it will take time and persistence and don't get impatient! I also recently joined MFP and the site is a great tool to keeping one on track. It is so easy to count calories with it and track your exercise too.
  • Haven't had a bagel in months...now this thread is making me want to eat a nice fresh one with butter..Mmmmmmmm. Just been keeping calorie dense stuff like that out of temptation for now. Used to bake them too as a 20-something back when. Nothing like firing up the boiler and huge gas ovens at 4:00am and cranking out…
  • Sounds great, KJ! Take some pictures and post a few if you can. Would love to see some views of these places. Don't kill yourself on those hills. Less O2 there. Should be tough if you are used to flatland! And on the road in Denver, watch out for young Cheech & Chong wannabees :)
