  • I take Metformin. I've had digestive issues but it is tolerable. My biggest difficulty is the fact that it is an anorectic and there are days it is quite difficult for me to eat. I can go for 16 hours easily without feeling hungry, which isn't great for keeping my blood sugar stable. I rely on liquids (yep, those…
  • You've gotten great advice here and your openness to it really speaks to your self-awareness and your willingness to keep an open mind. I just wanted to send some hugs your way. Your positive attitude here speaks volumes about your character. I have no doubt that you will be able to make a plan for going forward. Best…
  • Yes, many use net carbs instead of total carbs, though that is an individual choice. I personally use total carbs because I was trained to use total carbs by my dietitian when I had Gestational Diabetes and I'm more comfortable with it. I think that the Atkins line of products use net carbs. I looked at the back of a box a…
  • I have a history of hypertension and currently take Lisinopril, though the main reason I take it is to protect my kidneys from diabetes. It also lowers my BP. I take 5 mg daily and about 35 lbs ago I was still having times where my BP was high. After 35 lbs lost my 5 mg is working beautifully. I'll probably always have to…
  • I drink about 60 ounces of water daily, 16 ounces of coffee, and then I'll sometimes have a 16 ounce unsweetened tea or a 12 ounce can of diet soda. It's been super hot and humid the past few days so my fluid intake has gone way up. It will probably be less when January-February hit and we are lucky to crawl out of the 20s…
  • Der. Now I feel stupid! I've used the recipe builder before for soups--it comes in super handy (hahahaha...SOUPER handy). Pardon me, it's Thursday night and my mind is mostly gone. :D
  • Wow!!! You look great! Congrats on the nursing degree! That's tough stuff right there!
  • :( What if I pretend to be a service dog?
  • This is how I feel about unloading the dishwasher. Oh, and for once in my life *I* would like to be the first person in the bathroom after I clean it. Wait...one more thing. I'm the only female here with three males. I'm pretty darn stoked about the day toilet duties will belong to those with poor aim and not me!
  • Damn. Am I the only one who is a little bit jealous of bosses taking employees out for dinner? I would love mine to just respond to my emails or know how to pronounce my last name.
  • Just curious--how do you guys measure dry pasta when you are cooking for a whole family? The only way I could figure you could do this is by cooking your portion separately. I always weigh my serving cooked and then make sure to log it as cooked so that I'm being as accurate as possible.
  • What kind of job is this? I thought it was illegal in the US to make a person work for 13 hours with just one break. I'm guessing you live in a rural area? I don't think I would survive in an area without 24-hour grocery stores!
  • I love bread, but I limit my intake because it is super easy to over-indulge. Usually when bread is presented to me it is at a restaurant and I abstain because there is something else I'm planning for those calories! I use very thin flatbread for sandwiches a lot.
  • I'm Type II and I eat bread and pasta. It's about portion control. You need a lifestyle that is sustainable. In the diabetic community, a lot of people really believe that pre-diabetes is still diabetes and needs to be treated as such, which means a diet that is low(er) in carbohydrates. It's the simplest thing you can do…
  • Pack your meal instead of eating it at work. Take the burger off of the bun, skip the fries, bring a small side salad to supplement part of the meal, and I don't see a problem at all with the chili (not that I see a problem with any of the rest of it either). Rice and beans together are an energy powerhouse. I think there…
  • Thyroid troubles can be challenging for many reasons, and successfully losing weight is one of them. I hope that your doctor is giving you some sort of thyroid replacement right now to optimize your thyroid levels. You really need levels below 3, and perhaps even lower than that. My endocrinologist wants to see my TSH…
  • It's definitely good to get the endo's blessing on this. I don't want to make guesses when it comes to my health...especially with something that I need to successfully manage for many years to come (the endo thought I should live to 103, hehe).
  • I just thought I would give an update regarding my endos take on this. Based on my age (33) and my average BS readings and the fact that I'm working out at about 80% of my target heart rate, he is ok with my blood sugar spikes as they are actually lowering my readings for the next 12-14 hours and putting almost all of my…
  • I have seen no difference with weight loss either unless the processed food is very high in sodium. Then I just retain water and feel all bloated.
  • I struggle with this as well. I have to actually say to myself, out loud, "ONE pound at a time, ONE pound at a time". It seems ridiculous, but I have to verbally remind myself that I've done 30 lbs already. Some other things I've done: bought new mascara, took the kids out for a hike, bought a sugar scrub. It seems dumb,…
  • I'm not sure what you mean by "clean eating" but like a lot of other posters have said, add some different touches to your food to spice it up! I eat a lot of boneless, skinless chicken breast but I like to have it different ways. That might not work with your definition of "clean", but it pretty tasty and keeps food…
  • Agree on the whole semantics part. When I talk about my diet I'm talking about my way of eating, my way of life, my lifestyle change. I'm using the term diet to simply describe what I'm eating daily.
  • Well, I work in schools so it isn't uncommon to be offered treats. I just ignore them. It honestly doesn't bother me because I'm doing what I need to do. No one cares if I do or don't eat something that is offered to me. And you know what, sometimes I will partake! I just log it into MFP and accommodate accordingly.
  • I eat Greek yogurt or eggs. I'm not one for a lot of breakfast either but I find that those two foods help to reduce my desire to indulge myself at lunch!
  • I use the I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray on my air-popped popcorn.
  • I lost weight while I was pregnant. I had Gestational Diabetes that was diet-controlled. Because I was overweight to begin with, they didn't mind that I was losing some weight as long as it was reasonable. I actually lost almost 20 lbs with my second son. I was carefully watched by doctors and it wasn't a problem. Then…
  • I really don't like seeing lists of what we "can't have". I think that is so outdated and an inappropriate one-size-fits-all approach. I think we should be eating to our meters. Some people can happily combine beans and brown rice and some of us can't. Personally, I'm one who can combine rice and legumes as long as I'm…
  • I plan to do a re-feed every 6-8 weeks. I did one about 6 weeks in so I'll have another at the end of this month. I noticed very positive results. I increased carbs, protein and fat as I'm diabetic so I do have to cap those carbs (sadly). I had a pretty big loss (~3 lbs) at my weigh-in after the re-feed day.
  • Just had to Google "resistant starch" because before this post I hadn't heard of it. I would like to know if anyone has tried adding more to their diet and have noticed positive results in regards to blood sugar readings.
  • My husband buys Saucony brand.
