I found that making a cup of Greek coffee has helped me. I really enjoy the taste; it's not your typical dark roast. I add a small amount of sugar, and that's it. Otherwise, I much prefer coffee with flavored cream. You can also substitute tea for coffee with all the stuff, and that works well for me too.

That does bring up a point worth considering. Try using the food scale religiously, but only weigh yourself once a week. I get grief for this too. I just do what I need to, and let the others think what they will. *shakes head* As for the MIL, your spouse should be dealing with this as well. If he can't curtail this sort of thing, you might start developing excuses why you won't be attending nearly as many family functions.
