  • I would also guess that you are eating back your workout calories. Since the calorie credits for exercise here are a little high, you may be eating too many whiile working out. But hey, if you are toning and then losing after, it is working eventually. Right?
  • I log kayaking. Just be honest about the amount of time spent paddling. If you do a lot of floating/chatting/coasting etc. then reduce the time you log.
  • If I move the scale any, it will give a different measurement. If it doesn't move the weight is usually the same. Trust me I have jumped on that thing many times in a row trying to get that certain number I was working towards.
  • I know the feeling. My wife and daughters love cookies and chips and there are sugary snacks everywhere. I turn it into a double benefit. I leave the house and walk, bike, swim or kayak. I lower my calorie intake and add exercise at the same time. Down side is that I spend a lot of time alone :frown:
  • That is almost 3lbs a week. You most likely received a "starvation Mode" warning with that figure. That's MFP's way of saying that you shouldn't count on that amount of weight loss. Your body may fight it.
  • You cannot do any more than show Mike how it can be done. The decision to change your life and lose weight is very personal and can be triggered by many things. For me, I just decided I wanted to be able to do activities with my daughters. I did not want to just sit and watch them grow up. One day I was content with my…
  • Good goals! You need rewards. You should pick something you would like to do/have for each month and reward yourself. Even if you do not achieve the weight goal but stick to the lifestyle change you should get your reward. You listed many very good changes to your life that will help control the weight and keep it off in…
  • Yes but if you need a foot long sub to fill you. ONE Big Mac will not be enough. Apples to apples. I love Subway, and one sub gives me a fully balanced meal (most of the food pyramid). Chicken breast, cheese, no sauce and loaded with every vegie.
  • READ THE DISCLAIMER ON THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE!!!!!!! Ok enouh shouting, but really, listen to your doctor and stick to that plan.
  • Many of my "snacks" hit 2,200 to 2,800 calories. Entire bag of chips. Entire bag of cheese curds. During holidays huge amounts of snack candybars. If the bag was closed I would not open it, but if it was open it was GONE! Arrrggggg, thanks for the reminder of those days of weakness.
  • I rarely eat the same meal as my wife and daughters. I cook my own meals though.
  • Do you mean heart rate monitor?
  • There are a LOT of people on this site. They range from 300+lbs with over a hundred to lose, to 120lbs with 5lbs to lose. There are professional (used to be) couch potatoes, and some aiming at professional body building. Not all people can grasp that there is more than one way to be successful at losing weight. IGNORE…
  • Yes the stairs would be a blessing in disguise if your knees could take it. Since you can't use them a lot, is there a way you could get a stationary bike. You would be surprized how many people have one collecting dust in their homes.
  • For me it is not a problem. In the winter it is exercise. In the summer it is "getting out and enjoying". Swimming, biking, hiking, jogging, kayaking. The hotter it is the more I do. My problem is finding time to get household chores done.
  • Right there is the number one diet killing quote. One day at a time. That is how we gain weight. Unfortunately In order to remove the 3,000cal "living it up" day from our bodies, we have to cut 600cal out of our already restricted allowance for five days. Use another "excuse" in those five days and you are up another…
  • Everyone has an opinion or their favorite study/research to throw at you. The bottom line is do what works. Try to make each calorie count (nutritionally). For me It was one meal a day 1000cal or less heavy on vegetable light on meat. If I got bored and wanted to snack I would get out of the house and either walk, bike,…
  • Is there anything WRONG with diet soda. Not really. Is it GOOD for you ...no. It just supports your body's cravings for sweets.
  • Market hype! Temporary dehydration equated to fat burned. Elevated heart rate is due to your bodies need for circulation to cool and not from the need of oxygen to burn fat/carbs. This will fool a heart rate monitor to think calories are being burned.

  • If you can't log it, don't eat it! That is how MFP helps me. It can be due to laziness or difficulty or inconvinience, but the bottom line is, it is a motivator to put the snacks back in the pantry instead of your mouth. I think many people fail because they have too many of the "this won't matter" foods. Calories add up…

  • Trust your closest friends. The ones that will be honest with you. Ask them to let you know if you are getting too thin or you are not looking healthy. The feature that we see as ugly or too fat might not be the same feature that others see when they look at us. For me it is the "flat tire" around my waist. That was my…
  • WOW, this brings back memories. Nine years ago I was in the same shape as you. When I had that "turning moment" and realized I HAD to do something about my weight. Those first walks were short and painful. Sore arches, sore back, sciatica pain, knee surgery, the works. My body was wore out from carrying all of the extra…
  • Ball of your foot. Set your seat to a height that gives you a little extension of your ankle without requiring you to shift your hips. This gives your calves a workout too. If you get pains in your calves or shins you can use your arch more.
  • Frozen strawberries and pineapple blended with plain yogurt and orange juice.
  • Concentrate on how you do activities during the day. Simple things like getting out of a chair or climbing a staircase. As you feel yourself slightly jumping up the steps you will remember the day when the railing was used more for compensation than balance.
  • Is the moon really the same size when it first pops over the horizon? It is a phenomenon of our minds perception abilities. Most of the pictures of people we see are professionally posed, lighted, and altered to be appealing. Our minds learn to expect that in a picture and when we just "snap a shot" we expect to see…
  • Thanks for the comments. I'm glad to hear that others feel the same way I do.
  • I weigh daily. MFP can graph your weight for you and the more data you provide, the better the graph. You can see all of the ups and downs AND also the steady decline (hopefully). If you are at risk of giving up if you gain a little, then do weekly. If you can use your weight loss as reward and your gain as motivation to…
  • LOL. A recent study just found that there is a direct relation between birth and death. The shocking truth was found after computers checked 1.5 billion random death certificates spanning over two decades. BEING BORN INCREASES YOUR RISK OF DYING BY 100%. I think I agree with you Taylor. People need to get out, live life,…
