I do think it's possible. You should follow the advice about tracking and double-check your methods. But if you feel that's all good, experiment with ~5-10% cal reductions until you find a number where you're averaging a healthy weekly loss. Experimentation really is a catch-all. If you're not logging accurately, even…

I don't think so. It may not be as accurate, but if you're eating at a deficit, you should see a downward trend. I weigh with clothes and boots on, so I'm not exactly worried about the scale #, just that it's slightly smaller than it was the week before. I fluctuate about 3/4 of a pound to a pound and a half depending on…

I've seen it mentioned before, but camel spiders/spider crickets are pretty bad. Pretty gross. They're sizable, and look like a mashup of spiders, crickets and roaches, and have a mottled coloring that makes them even grosser, somehow. And those long, long antennae. Normally, they live in caves. Because of this, they have…

If someone pretends that they know everything about the way the large scale GMO ingestion affects human beings, they're completely full of baloney. No one does, because the research hasn't been performed. There is a lot of uncertainty. There are some studies showing that the toxins from GMOs--herbicides & pesticides show…

Wow, that would give me a much lower goal for 1 lb/week weightloss than the oft-cited TDEE calculator, here: http://scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/ At lightly active that calculator tells me I need about 2561 to maintain my weight, and 2049 for 1 lb/week weightloss. This formulas says I only need 2110 to maintain…

I guess it all comes down to what our definition of "processed" entails. I can live with preservatives that have proven to be safe over a 20 or 30 year period, even if the chemical formula names are long and unwieldy. As much as I like both Doritos & Potato Chips, if either of those products are made with GMO's, I'd…

Sorry to say, but it sounds like he's using you. Do you have some romantic interest in him? From your description, it sounds like he might think you do, and is exploiting that interest to get things he wants. Guys do this all the time, speaking as a guy. It sucks, but I think you should move on from this dude. It's not…

I'm sorry, but to pretend that everything is completely settled on this issue is just inaccurate. Nutritional science, in the loosest definition of the term, is about 200 years old. The idea that we need vitamins to survive is about 100--Doctors and Scientists thought that there was some bacteria at work affecting the…

deleted, double post.

Yes, I did. I don't think he specified that section of the FAQ to folks that were eating at an estimated 700 calorie deficit, though. I have built muscle before, and putting on 2 pounds of muscle in four weeks seems a bit unrealistic when you're on a pretty sizable deficit.

thanks man. How long did you do the severe restriction to "jump start" the weight loss? I'm not sure I want to do that, will probably just stick with my current plan for a bit to see if it's water-retention related, but I'd be curious to know what your plan of attack is. Having experimented in the past with creatine and…

I'm not adding any calories back in for exercise. Just doing the exercise and going by my calorie total, as if nothing had happened. I have my setting on "lightly active", whatever the one is above sedentary. Like I said, standup desk, on my feet 8-10 hours a day, mon-fri, and walk around campus quite a bit. If all the…

Understood that no one is 100% accurate. So your POV is that it's got to be my logging. I'm really not trying to argue with good advice here, I'm just being honest in that it's tough for me to understand how that could be. Let me state my case. Ok, my logging for the past 30 days has been ~1820 calories/daily. Say I was…

YES YES YES. This idea that it's all been settled and it's just CICO is very tough for me to fully buy into. The body is an incredibly complex system, and there is a ton of variation among people. Modern medical science is still a very recent and ever-changing field. To think that it's all been completely figured out, and…

Hmmm...yeah, you're right. For stuff like chicken, I do weigh it after it's been cooked. Could probably tighten that up.

I'm sorry, no, I think I did something wrong when posting. Maybe tried to delete the "]" in the title, and accidentally hit "enter" and then went back in the browser and ended up double posting. Sorry for the confusion. I thought this topic was dropping off the page, thanks to all that are offering advice here, I was…

Yeah, I've been eating 1700 total for the past week. I averaged out over the past 30 days, and I'm at 1820 total/day (started ~1900). I agree it seems low, which is why I started at 1900. Believe me, around 930pm, I start feeling pretty hungry, and realize that my day has been pretty light. Seeing a linear progression with…

Thanks for the time & thought you put into this post. I'm guessing that your opinion is that in a world where I actually am logging everything accurately--purely as a hypothetical--the only possible reason I wouldn't be losing fat would be some sort of medical issue?

Now would you say that something like the MFP Tuna recipe is problematic? The nutritional information & serving size was taken directly from this website. http://blog.myfitnesspal.com/2014/06/avocado-tuna-salad/ It looked like a good way to get some healthy protein, with the avocado and nuts, but you think the info in the…

It's too much to ask of my wife when she's running around after our 3 year old, and taking care of our fussy 11 month old, along with everything else she does to keep the house running. I'm sure she'd do it, but I would really much rather just overestimate, at worst. Sorry if that sounds like I'm trying to shortcut, or…

whoops, thought it was open! Realized it was to "friends" only. Should be good now.

Haven't done the measurement thing yet. My thought process was that because I am currently at a pretty high BF%, the scale should be a good indicator. From reading the responses in this thread, it seems maybe I should add some measurements into my evaluation process. My pants might feel a hair looser, but I'm definitely…

Thanks man, that is immensely helpful!

I do eat a lot of salt. I'm almost always over my sodium intake for the day. I'd say I'm trying to compensate for the reduced calories by adding more flavor to the meals I eat, but if I'm being honest, I pretty much always love salt. I've always been more of a "savory" eater than someone with a sweetooth. Given the choice…

Yeah, haha, don't know if my ego can take an honest assessment of my BF% at this point. Honestly, the advice to just kind of stay the course seems to be pretty reasonable and the most sensible. I'm going to try it for at least another 2-3 weeks before switching anything up. Thanks for your feedback.

I'm trying to lose about 30 pounds, total. Even though 160 might be on the high end of BMI for my height, I know from experience that it's a good weight for me to walk around at. I don't have a specific timetable for the loss, just want to see some--any--progress. Cardio is a thought, as a way to increase what should be a…

haha, I'm just worried she's being too nice to me :)

Thanks Cleo and Parks! I'm going to stick with it. I am an extremely impatient person--at least I realize this!

Yes, Barbie, I do weigh the food before I eat it. Don't always do the "grams" conversion for solids, sometimes go by cups, depending on the available units from the food in the database. I could improve there, I guess. It's hard to believe that would be the source of my "failure to launch", though. Considering I'm so far…
