All this talk about Sam's Club and a Groupon arrived in my inbox. $45 for a year of Sam's Plus membership (normally about $99 I think). Plus they give you a $20 gift card, a roasted chicken, and some other goodies. Cool! I bought one. Made my way to Sam's to sign up. Apparently they started selling the Groupon's yesterday,…

It's perfectly under control and usually about 130/88. But the systolic likes to shoot up to the 150's without meds. But I was heavier. I'm less heavy (and shrinking by the day) and my carbs are very low so I'm hopeful that will be enough.

Thank you for the encouragement @Jbarnes1210 I appreciate it! I stopped my Lisinopril today after 2 full days on the diet. Part of "keto flu" as I understand it is that along with dropping the water weight, you lose sodium, etc and a side effect is low blood pressure. Yesterday it was 110/83. I imagine I will be fine for…

Exactly right. Needs some TLC, that's for sure.

Thanks for all of the great advice! Today I'm going to do a 5 mile MAF test (any Maffetone fans?) then run another 10. It will be on the track so easy to punch out early if needed. No breakfast on Sunday's but for lunch I had an avocado, some cheese and 3 bacon/egg/cheese cups. I will bring some olives for the run. I've…

Hmmm. Maybe I can quit the Lisinopril after I drop 20lbs. I just bought my first container of Natural Calm yesterday.

That's going to be awesome. But I'm just wondering what to do about my 4 hour run this afternoon? Just don't eat? That's one way to burn off the glycogen I suppose! I bought some olives. Maybe they will work? I feel like I’m starting over again. I guess I am!

Perfect. Thank you!

Holy smokes! What a gorgeous course. I would love/hate that race. I would love the scenery, and my legs would hate the vert. ;) Congrats even though it was a DNF. If not for the screw up, I'm sure you would have beat cut off. What an adventure. I would love to head up there someday for a race.

This "newfangled" approach isn't new! Elites have been doing it for decades. Arthur Lydiard basically invented it if that gives you an idea of it's age. Many average and recreational runners drifted far away, but many are coming back to this wisdom. It fits with the saying that the Kenyan's have for American runners…

Nice! You make these videos? Subscribed. Thanks for the idea. I'm all about volume. Looking forward to experimenting!

Awesome. It's good to know the "why" of it!

Thank you all for the responses! I use SaltStick Capsules for runs longer than a couple of hours. I may just start popping those when I start. Check out the profile. It's very close to sweat is why I picked it. Nice mixture of goodies. But more salt on my food too. Cheaper than these capsules.

Do you have a rough idea of how many grams of protein that equates to? Total newbie here. I haven't even started yet. Prolly another week! But in the Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living the author basically said to make sure you don't go overboard on protein. For me, prolly 150g/day. Over that and I would start…

Good call. Listen to your doctor!

Ooh, that script is pretty slick. :)

Usually the answer is to hold the person back a bit since they tend to be over-eager beginners. This is clearly NOT the case with you though! Though you haven't run an ultra, I think that you have plenty of good experience that will help you to successfully finish. Read "Relentless Forward Progress" for some great tips.…

I will echo everyone else and say rest. Trust the training you put in and race day mojo will get you there. Your body will benefit more from the rest than beating it up in a weakened state. If you are really sick, and it sounds like you are. I'm almost never sick except maybe an annual cold. My rule is that if the sick…

It is what it is. There is nothing you can do about it but accept it and move forward! I'm always second guessing myself leading up to a race. Always.

What happens to me, and it's weird, is that I don't cramp during exercise, but after a long run (say 20+ miles) I have to be careful how I flex my foot. If I take off my shoes and socks and need to do some kind of foot maintenance, BAM!, a cramp can strike. But other than that I'm good. I guess it's possible that it's due…

That's why I'm going to wait until after my next 50M race on April 4th to start this. I normally would take a week off anyway, so it's not a huge deal to take off a bit more until I'm adapted. I don't want to feel miserable on my runs. At least due to "keto flu"! It's good to get a reminder that there's a reason I'm…

My (limited) understanding is that being thoroughly fat adapted (nutritional ketosis) is great for endurance, but not as important for short explosive exercises.

I wear a Fitbit Charge. I really like it for what it is. For exercise I wear it, but pretty much ignore it. I use my Garmin Forerunner 910XT for that! But it's great to just see if I'm being active enough on the days when I'm not running. Any day I run I easily blow past the default 10K step goal.

Sound really interesting - and easy (which is key!). I will file this away for when I start. :)
-
Thank you for all of the input! I don't think it will hurt anything to give it a shot for 6 months. Hopefully it will be a part of a healthier new me! ;)

Thank you for this!

Congrats Gilbert! You crushed it.

I just picked that up yesterday for Kindle along with Racing Weight. But I first need to finish "Run Faster" by Brad Hudson and Matt Fitzgerald. I'm stoked!

Ooh, another podcast to check out. Thanks!

I think it's possible. Some of is up to your hard work and dedication, and some of it is beyond your control (age, genetics, etc). And strangely, sometimes a person for the first time in their life tries to run to get in shape and they find a remarkable athlete underneath. I just listened to the Ultrarunnerpodcast of…
