  • I've recently given up low fat anything - cleaned out the chemicals and sugar and most processed carbs (I say most because I still have one slice of low GI toast in the morning - some things I know I'd just miss too much). No movement on the scale in either direction yet but I feel so. much. better. Honestly I have more…
  • Hugely ironic - the UK is GORGEOUS at the moment - presently in the upper 70s which is pretty much a heat wave even in summer!! It's one of the first times in memory that the weather is better here than it is in my home town in California!
  • FYI in the UK that dried fruit/nuts mix (Kirkland own brand) comes with warning labels pasted on it about e-numbers. As an American living in the UK I know that e-numbers aren't routinely worried about there, but they're chemical additives that studies have suggested might contribute to things like ADHD in children. I…

  • Am I the only one who finds it vaguely disturbing that people are suggesting a stool softener? Surely if you're eating enough fibre and good fats you shouldn't need some sort of medication to have a poo? Do agree with black coffee though - I don't drink it for that purpose (I just luuuuurve it) but it certainly hastens…
  • I go once a month and stock up on freezable stuff - prawns, salmon, chicken breasts, pork shoulders. I find that their fruit/veg isn't that great a bargain unless you can use it up fast - I don't know if stuff sits around for a while before it hits the shop floor, but even stuff I use daily like avocados seem to go off…

  • Agree. And I also think it does act as an appetite suppressant to an extent. I've been switching to green tea after my morning coffee for a couple of weeks now and I'm finding myself less ravenous at lunch time and less interested in snacking in the late afternoon....
  • I think of it as Millerll describes - as little processed food as possible and as close to nature as possible. If I have bread or something like that I look for something with as few ingredients as possible (and nothing chemical).
  • I tend to go for nuts and veggies with hummus. Cooked prawns in mayo.... Olives.... Some cheeses - the less processed the better.
  • Rule of thumb for me is to look at the number of ingredients - if there's more than about 5 or 6 and/or if I don't know what even one of them might be, I steer clear. While you're cooking dinner, chop up extra veggies and cook a bit of extra chicken, etc. for a salad the next day - at least then you know exactly what…
  • Could not agree more!!! I'm an American now living permanently in the UK and one of the first things I noticed after living here a while and going back for a visit was how loaded with sugar everything is in the US. I never noticed it until I was away from it, but when you stop eating Skippy, etc. and start eating natural…
  • Smoked salmon on rye bread? An egg beaten with a 1/2 teaspoon of flaxseed oil on toast? Not sure if you're in the UK, but Rachel's organic coconut greek yoghurt with some sliced strawberries is like heaven but I only have it as a treat 'cause it's full of sugar. But SO GOOD.
  • I'm in Thame (Oxon) so less than an hour away! Feel free to add me if you want....
  • I really agree that everyone is a bit different and what works for some won't work for others. I've read a lot in the past few weeks about carbs and sugar and I'm trying a sort of bespoke combination of Primal/Clean/Low GI and it's working brilliantly so far. I've ditched anything termed "low fat" and gone for full fat…

  • Yep, agree with avocado, nuts and flaxseed oil! All sooooo good for you and will definitely boost your fat numbers!
  • I absolutely love my 2 morning coffees - it's the ritual AND the taste, but I can't stand milk or sugar in it - I think it's just what you get used to.... I grew up in Northern California where there's a coffee shop on every corner and my teens were spent sitting around drinking the stuff so I guess I just got used to it.…
  • First of all, I think you should really seriously congratulate yourself on losing four pounds in a week! Positive "self talk" doesn't come easy to people like me so take it from an expert. I'm a huge stress eater. Huge. Literally and figuratively. I think the thing for me is to think HARD before I give in - so if I…
  • My current routine is at the weekend to cook some chicken or prawns and then each night as I make dinner, I chop up some extra veg then in the morning add some avocado and pumpkin seeds and presto - super healthy salad with a decent veg/protein/healthy fat combination..... Drizzle on a bit of flax oil or a dollop of…
  • I completely agree with this!! I've been really working to eliminate processed foods and I feel much, much better for it - and when I have things like bread I make sure it's as clean as possible - few ingredients and low GI. I get plenty of carbs, but I completely agree that they can easily come mostly from veg and fruit…
  • Are you US or UK? I think you can find most of that at places like Holland & Barrett but I actually have had pretty good luck at Sainsburys too.
  • Another one shooting for 130-140! I've been as small as 120 but I didn't look healthy at all - 140 is definitely my top end.
  • Completely agree with the suggestions to shop weekly and plan meals so that you don't end up with stuff you don't need! I don't really think you can eat clean without shopping pretty frequently - the idea is to get rid of processed food but that's the sort of thing that lasts forever (which is disturbing in its own right!)…
  • Isn't it interesting how everyone's body is so different?! I LOVE depo - no weight gain, it's evened out my mood swings and breast soreness, and I LOVE not having to deal with a period!!

  • I don't suppose "neither" is a helpful answer? I've just gone cold turkey on sugar in the past week and I feel completely different - way more energy, able to stay up later at night, and have finally started seeing the scale move again in the right direction. I have strong feelings against chemical sweeteners and so…
  • This!! Eggs, smoked salmon, etc. I do have a single slice of toast with my eggs but I buy bread with as few ingredients as possible from a proper bakery and made with less wheat (with rye, spelt, quinoa, etc).
  • But olive oil is super good for you - you need good fats in your diet!
  • Morning!

  • Bumping - I'll probably join you. I wanted to start it a couple of weeks ago but I'm waiting for it to be light early enough - I really only have the time/energy to do it first thing but I leave for work stupid early!
  • Bumping this - would love to hear what people think of them. They are *very* expensive so definitely not willing to commit unless I know it's worth it!
  • I don't see anything at all wrong with low carb, but I think it's a bit ridiculous to cut them out entirely TBH. Particularly fruits and vegetables. For me the most important rule is to stay away from highly processed food - bread, cereal, pasta - when I eat as close to nature as possible I feel SO much better. I have more…
  • I have a tendency to overdo the carbs so I like stuff that doesn't require a bap - if you can get into Costco they do huge packs of relatively lean pork ribs - marinate them in hoisin and soy sauce and sprinkle with a bit of 5 spice powder! Yum!
