  • Well, he went to see the doctor. They just told him to take ibuprofen for three weeks more. We don't really have the option of just going to an orthopedist here, it's more a matter of what the doctor considers necessary. :/
  • Sorry, only just looked back at this. Thanks for all the advice. I think he's reluctant to try and get referred (NHS - can't go straight threre) for physio as it can take a month or two before you get an appointment here. But he has agreed to mention it to the doctor as he has an appointment about a different issue anyway.…
  • Eliminating carbs won't aid muscle gain.
  • Crack some into simmering soup and let them cook in that. Delicious.
  • Okay - thank you for the advice. I'll try adding 100 calories. :)
  • Yes, I do - I just don't understand what's going on, how can my maintenance go up by several hundred calories? I've only put on about 4 lbs since I started, which doesn't seem enough to make that sort of difference.
  • Update 2: I've kind of stopped gaining. Not sure whether to increase calories? It seems a little odd that a woman of my height can potentially maintain on 2000+ calories. I'm not really active, other than the lifting and a short walk every day...
  • Won't being underweight increase your own risk of developing it? Anyway, if doctors have told you to put on weight, it's probably best to do that, y'know. Why don't you want to?
  • If you'll drink milk, add heavy cream to it for more calories.
  • Is there anything you enjoy eating? (Muffins...?)
  • UPDATE: My hip got better!!!! :) The weight gain also slowed (though I did, of course, manage to gain a couple of pounds very quickly over Christmas eve/day/boxing day/new year's eve (we didn't really 'do' new year's day). But more to the point. MY HIP HAS STOPPED HURTING! Hoorah for bulking! : D And the stalls have…
  • No - mainly thumb and index finger.
  • I don't know if this will help you at all - but a while ago I read that calcium helps with a lot of symptoms of PMS (didn't even really believe it at the time, but thought it was worth a try). So, I increase my calcium consumption to around 150% of my goal the week before, and it really helps me with cravings, general mood…
  • Maitria - As I said before: losing weight has caused MORE issues than I had before. I have heard from others (on the official uk hypermobility forum I was given the link to by the first physiotherapist I saw) that they've had the same experience. Multiple medical professionals (including an orthopedic surgeon) have…
  • Wasn't expecting more replies - sorry about the late response. We've ordered calipers, though we think the body fat reading is fairly accurate - it does seem to fluctuate around 2% though. In regards to my diet, it's fine, I get plenty of nutrients, etc, regardless of whether it qualifies as clean. Moving on... hill8570 -…
  • You're probably right - I was told that I won't recover as well as other people. Thought that bulking might help that, though - it has, to some degree, because I don't feel awful and exhausted all the time like before - but still. There isn't really anyone like that I can ask about this. I've been told I'm basically doing…
  • Just a quick question before I go cook some not-at-all-lean burgers and churn some delicious whisky ice cream ;) (I'll get back to the replies later, very grateful for the support) - JoRocka - what sort of increments would you recommend? Do you think mine are too much currently?
  • We worked it out based on rate of weight loss and calorie deficits. Though the calculators say about the same, just a little more. I don't really have a target at the moment as to how much I want to put on. Happy for it to happen slowly though.
  • I've tried to explain the condition as best I can below. I'm sorry it's so long, and sorry about my own lack of knowledge about how it all works, it's based on what I've been told my professionals and other people with it... I have Joint Hypermobility Syndrome. I have been diagnosed independently by a physiotherapist and…
  • I'm back. To answer the questions: I'm 5'1 and am fluctuating between 141-143.5 pounds. My body fat is going up faster than the actual weight. Admittedly, I always knew the scales weren't likely to be that accurate for body fat, but I thought they would show CHANGE accurately, rather than the real figure. I've been lifting…
  • Apparently I'm supposed to go and try again now. So, just a quick answer for now - I'm not terribly overweight and have a medical condition which means gaining the muscle is a lot more important at the moment than losing fat. Thank you for the replies, I'll read them in a bit. - After I fail at pressing. Hooray. :(
  • My husband had the same issue. He saw several people about it and it was concluded that he had asthma, and it was most likely that causing his symptoms (his inhalers tend to relieve the pain). So, you should see a doctor - but try not to worry about it.
  • Hope you don't mind, but I had a look at your diary and noticed in some instances you use teaspoon and cup measures instead of weighing. These can be quite inaccurate, though possibly not enough to make you stall, I don't know. Just an idea.
  • Thanks for the replies. Sometimes I just think that maybe it's not because I'm depressed and that's just a coincidence, and maybe I'm actually really bad at lifting... but that's not really very logical. Good to know it's okay to just take a day off from it sometimes. I'm not suffering from clinical depression, by the way.…
  • Thanks for all the advice. Seems I misunderstood, then. I have a bagel left, so I'll eat that then cut it out for a while. Starting to think these tablets are making things worse though. Feeling pretty ill, and I've not been to the bathroom in a few days. However, in the leaflet it states that you shouldn't stop taking…
  • I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing - with TDEE calculations, does strength training count as activity (like in Scooby's calculator)? Or is that just supposed to mean cardio?
  • Champagne (also most wine). Although, not such a good thing at celebrations - I have to sit there taking tiny sips until I can pass it along to someone who appreciates it and won't think less of me. Vile stuff...
  • Really - just me?
  • I've never used those types of oats before, but have heard they cook quicker if you soak them overnight.
  • Yeah, I think we're doing the starting strength one. I should probably mention I've been having whole weeks off at a time for various reasons (ankle injury, illness, and one time we put too much weight on for squats, didn't realise until I got stuck and couldn't get up again, then I was too fatigued to continue or do other…
