  • I think it is a bogus claim. Any caloric deficit forces your body to burn through it's glycogen stores, and there is an associated water loss with that process. But it will level off.
  • In all likelihood you'll be fine. There are benefits to bringing your heart rate close to 100%. I get mine in the 170s on a regular basis and I'm in my late 40s. Listen to your body. If you feel weak or dizzy slow it down.
  • My total oil usage is relatively low. I use virgin organic CO for frying at higher temps, and the much more widely accepted olive oil for everything else.
  • Unless you trying to do low carb/keto I don't think a little sugar is gonna derail anything. I set mine to 100 g total in customization- most of that from comes from fruit and milk. I do find that when I limit sugar(and carbs in general) it helps keep my appetite under control.

  • Thirty three posts and not one lawyer joke. I'm very disappointed in this thread. :) Good luck Joe, you can do it. MFP worked very well in helping me lose about 50 lbs and has worked well to help me keep it off. My blood pressure and lipid profile have normalized, and I am in the best cardiovascular endurance shape of my…
  • Hi guys and welcome. MFP is a great tool. I lost 100 pounds in 2011 but hit a plateau about 50 pounds in. MFP helped me break the plateau and lose another 50 or so. It's helped me keep it off, too. You didn't ask for it but here's my advice- Don't lie to yourself about what you eat, many people do. I even catch myself…
  • If you have not run before you may want to look at a program called "couch to 5K". There is a website and apps which will have youn running 5 K in a matter of weeks. Resistance training better known as " weight lifting" is probably the most useful thing you can do to tone your body. A basic program of a few heavy lifts…
  • BTW, Amazon has pretty competitive pricing on Optimum's products..
  • Some good stuff in this thread. One thing that has not been mentioned is that MFP sets protein goals lower than what most people in the fitness community consider adequate. A commonly sought after goal is 1g of protein per pound of lean bodyweight. That's roughly 200gs/day for me. I basically had to change my eating habits…
  • Now I feel like a creep. I watch other people work out, and I notice people watch me at time too. I am friendly and smile and say hi to everyone that walks by. I sometimes watch a workout class at the YMCA, but I'm not getting mental images for use later that evening when I'm alone. i watch it's because it's decent…
  • I hope this is a permanent lifestyle change for me and I'm not willing to give up good tasting food at social events for the rest of my life. I just eat lessor quantities and try to make up for any calorie surpluses by eating less in the other two meals of the day. If asked to provide something, offer to bring a vegetable…
  • Yeah, alternative milks may be great for the lactose intolerant, but not sure why anyway would give up dairy unless they need to or don't like the taste. Unsweetened vanilla almond milk is not bad, but as mentioned it's hard to beat skim milk if you're after most the most nutrients per calorie.
  • Gym for me- I can't stay focused at home, there's too many things to distract. If I sold all my exercise equipment in my basment gym (that I rarely use) I could pay for two years of gym memberships, and have more room in my house, too.
  • Try it on an elliptical. You have no problems accelerating to full capacity and you won't fall off. It's easy on your joints. You can even incorporate your arms in the activity. The Sprint 8 people also recommend a recumbent bike as another suitable piece of equipment.
  • A few weeks ago I started a HIIT protocol on an elliptical. It is 2 minute warm up, then 30 seconds max effort followed by 90 seconds active rest. You repeat for a total of eight sets, then a two minute cool down. total time involved is less than 20 minutes. One of the key benefits claimed if done in this fashion and by…
  • powdered peanut butter. I believe defatted peanut flour is a generic name for it. It's pretty good. I dip my apple slice in it. Also good in shakes, etc.
  • Peanut butter is friggin' awesome, but too calorically dense for my diet. It is fairly healthy in moderation but there are much better sources of protein. I could easily pack away 1000 calories of it at one sitting. Soon, I plan to eat my entire day's worth of calories in peanut butter, just to see if I can get rid of my…
  • Optimum nutrition gold standard. Its a pretty popular product an well regarded by most. They have a natural version with a very short ingredient list. available on Amazon.
  • IIRC milk and yogurt are 80% casein protein. How about a cup of yogurt before bed. It has a similar protein per calorie and is more filling to me than a casein protein mix.
  • A cup of strong coffee, 1/2 cup skim or unsweetened almond milk, and nestle quick no sugar added powder makes a really nice mocha and is probably my favorite and keeps the drink pretty low in calories. other possible options: Vanilla flavored splenda packets Torani sugar free syrups Fat Free half and half Unsweetened…
  • It's just taste "OK" but is expensive. $4/pint is what I think I paid. You could make your own treat with some whey powder, milk, ice, and a blender.
  • The quest bars are pretty good and probably one of the healthiest bars on the market today. The cinnamon roll taste like a snickerdoodle cookie when it is warmed in the microwave. I just recently tried a supreme bar and it tasted better than any protein bar I have ever tried- just like a candy bar with no sugar alcohol…
  • Check out gold standard whey powder. Available on amazon for a pretty respectable price. Unflavored Fat Free Greek Yogurt, chicken breast or egg beaters are all very calorie efficient sources of protein. I put crystal lite drink mix in the yogurt to flavor it. Low sugar jams work very well too.
  • Take a closer look at Vitamin D and Fish Oil.
  • The grilled chicken sounds like a better choice. More protein than the veggie burger and no bread. But If you're craving a burger and you think this will satisfy, give it a whirl.
  • I've taken a couple of adipex and to me they are no more effective than a cup of strong coffee. I don't see too much protein in your diet. I do see a diet that would be very hard for many to stick with- It's a strange mix of food. I'd attempt to replace the liquid shakes with healthy solid food to see if that helps your…

  • I went pretty much from 1800 to 3000 calories (my maintenance) in early December. There was a weight increase of a couple of pounds, then the weight stabilized. I've actually lost a few more pounds since then, so i assume I'm still eating a slight deficit on average. My weight fluctuates around from about 212-217.
  • I've taken a few- to me they had no greater appetite suppressing effect effect than my jumbo cup of coffee.

  • For the record, I'm 46 and typically eat half my daily allotment of calories between supper and bedtime. I lost weight a a pretty good clip doing this last year, so I'm leaning towards the 'a deficit is a deficit "camp based on my personal experience. Question: How does BMR fit into this equation? We talk about storage of…
  • I shoot for 50 gs a day. I drink a decent quantity of water. Less than that and the plumbing tends to clog up unless I'm eating a lot of fat.
