  • try this: http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/index.php?s=leptin also, you may want to read this. it suggest we will have to stay vigilant: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/01/magazine/tara-parker-pope-fat-trap.html?_r=2&pagewanted=all http://www.muscleandstrength.com/articles/the-hormone-that-keeps-us-fat.html
  • I love almonds and nut butters, but simply eat too much of them if not careful. I think I could live off peanut butter. Cherrios and 1/2 cup of skim milk-not bad. Apples have a little soluble fiber, so there is a benefit to eating those for your cholesterol. Berries are usually good, Strawberries especially. Watch out for…
  • Hey Bailey, I just came form where you are starting. I started 2011 at around 315 and ended up 216.4 on New Years Eve. I need to lose another 20, but I intend to do it very slowly, probably the entire year. So, I hope you understand this info is coming from personal experience. I learned it the hard way and am trying to…
  • Old post, but I just discovered something I think is worth sharing. Unflavored greek yogurt has a lot of protein per calorie but I don't necessarily like the sourness of it. HOWEVER, I sprinkled a little crystal lite powder in it and it tastes just like flavored yogurt!-If you're not opposed to artificial sweeteners I…
  • Awesome job Mike. We had similar starting points and finish points. When I got below 220 my body said "no more weight loss for you!", so I'm in maintenance right now and hope to slowly loose another 20 lbs of fat this coming year. Do yourself a favor, read up on the hormone leptin and how it affects people who lose a…
  • I have used the bodymedia/bodybugg device to determine my caloric burn. I think it is fairly accurate. However, after about two weeks I gathered most of the data I needed. It would be cool to have a small group of people to split the cost and share the device. What this device did was confirm what the scale is revealing:…
  • I just had my first one on one lesson with a Russian kettlebell instructor today. He uses kettlebells and bodyweight exercises almost exclusively and is a huge fan of them. I didn't realize how important proper technique was to get the most benefit out of their use. You guys may want to look for a local instructor to help…
  • GUY HERE, And I myself am working on perceived physical flaws caused by excess bodyfat. And I may get flamed for this, because I realize that you guys aren't necessarily doing it to please the opposite sex. But, FWIW, I don't think I have ever discussed the physical attributes of a woman with other guys and the topic of…
  • Define a "cheat day"- is that at maintenance level for your? Or is a cheat day a day where would you gain weight if you ate that way every day? If a cheat day is still a caloric deficit or neutral, I think two per week is OK if it keeps you going in the right direction. Weight loss should be viewed as a marathon, not a…
  • Hi Guys, I lost about 95 lbs last year. I started using MFP back in late Summer when I hit a plateau and have managed to pull off another 50 or so using the program. Looking back, it really wasn't that bad. i wish I had done it twenty years ago. My advice is the same stuff you've probably heard before, but the reason we…
  • I weigh pasta and other dry ingredients before AND after it is cooked. Cooked pasta will double in weight plus some. So a serving size mentioned on the box might actually weigh 4.5 ounces when cooked. I store the items in tupperware. I take a piece of blue "painters tape" and stick it on the lid of the container. I write…
  • No, they are all bad. Send them to me for proper disposal. :) Seriously, the food industry usually plays it super safe on expiration dates. For example, most canned foods expire in about two years, when canned foods over 100 years old have been found and determined "not harmful" to eat. Try the look, first smell second, and…
  • multi vitamin, D3, and a lot of fish oil,
  • The aforementioned MDA is good. Robbwolf also has a great book/website/podcast on paleo. Also, lots of paleo info on the crossfit board under the nutrition section.
  • I recently believe I had an experience with Leptin after "cranking up" my diet and giving up my cheat days in an effort to meet a short term weight loss goal. I caught three colds in thirty days, my libido absolutely fell off a cliff, and my resting heart rate dropped as low as 48 bpm. A couple of days of carb refeeding…
  • Just left my local walgreens drug store. They had a small 6 cup rice cooker/steamer on sale for $10! That might be a great starter cooker.
  • I've used an exerspy, which is the same product as those two. It came with an elastic band that attached to my left tricep. Cool product-It gave great info, but I found after two weeks that it provided me with all the information I needed. My caloric burned varied between 2900 and 3900. with an average of about 3400/day
  • I weigh daily. Yes, sometimes I don't like what I see but realize that as long as I adhere to my diet, any gain is temporary I have recently began to track my weight on a spreadhseet and average my weight over the last ten days. That's the number I have begun to stick in MFP.
  • I had the same problem a few months ago. I was training my butt off five or six days per week. I contracted three different upper respiratory infections within thirty days. I normally average about one a year. I suspect that Leptin issues could potentially be the problem. This is especially true if you are on a extended…
  • Many still swear by milk as a post workout drink. Whole milk is supposed to be even more effective. Google " milk and muscle gains". Adequate protein, calories, and lifting heavy weight should put muscle on most.
  • I I don't eat fish either and was concerned about a fishy tasting belch. I'm taking large doses of fish oil. I bought the Kirkland brand at Costco and have been taking them for several weeks. I take two-four with meals and keep them in the refrigerator. They do occasionally cause me to belch but I haven't had a 'fishy…
  • For the record I concur with what has been said. For the most part, try to cut the simple carbs and make better choices. Keep your fiber intake up and eat lower glycemic index foods. Lower carb, higher (healthy) fats and protein will probably make you feel more satisfied. However, If it takes a little junk treat every day…
  • I vote for "Real food" but it can be difficult at times, especially when calorie restriction is a goal. I utilize both whey and "slower acting" casein powders in my diet to help keep my numbers high enough. I use whey when I wake up as a milk substitute in my morning cereal and also post work out. I use casein at night.
  • I guess it depends on how much protein you eat now, but it is tough for me to get adequate protein on a reduced calorie diet without the help of supplements. I'm a male and not much of a meat eater. I love my carbs. I shoot for 150 gm per day protein per day minimum. I drink about two shakes a day, which accounts for over…
  • If not vegan milk, cottage cheese, and greek yogurt are all pretty calorie (and cost) efficient ways to get your protein requirements in. I'm also partial to the Cytosport protein mix available at Costco.
  • Stick with water, your kidneys will thank you later! I don't track the volume I drink, I just try to keep my urine pretty colorless.

  • I prefer to eat out in advance, and budget the days calories accordingly. It's tough for me to have an enjoyable, filling meal at most places without closing in on 1000 calories.
  • There will be some residual oil not utilized but it's a tiny percentage. It's not like water and readily boil off at normal cooking temps into a steam. I say count it.
  • We could probably all make better food choices, but if it is working for them and they are losing, I say let it be.
  • As mentioned by several posters, protein consumption in the double digits should not be a problem for most any adult, assuming adequate water intake and no metabolic issues. Most in the fitness community try to take in at least .6 g per lb, and I have seen some studies indicating even higher protein consumption in the 1.5…
