I wondered how many posts I would read until I read the right answer! "in order to run faster…you have to run faster." In order to cycle faster… you have to cycle faster. In order to swim faster… you get the idea. Running speed intervals are vital for increasing speed. But you will not increase your 5K times by running two…

Don't forget to throw in some spinach. A great source of iron and you don't even taste it. The blueberries will hide the green color from the spinach.

I posted this response on 6/8. I believe this to still be true; at least for me. Today is a rest day from exercise so I decided to have a light breakfast of cheerios with milk (294 cal). Within an hour I was hungry and before I knew it consumed 478 calories from healthy snacks and ate an 871 calorie lunch. Now I am at my…

Great work. You even look happier in the after pic.

I made my own pizza tonight. I used Pillsbury Crescent Rounds (lots of fat; I would have used a flat out bread if my son wasn't sharing it with me), tomatoes, basil, mozzarella cheese. Also spinach salad with grapes and almonds. Chocolate pudding for dessert.

Two pounds burned. One pound = 3500 calories

Mix a bit of running in you long walks.

Are you running in good running shoes? They provide a cushion that helps. Do you have a high school track nearby? Today's tracks are rubberized so it makes it easier on the body. If there are synthetic (astro-turf) soccer or football fields that also works to cushion. Remember concrete sidewalks are the hardest on the…

I think it is the most important meal of the day. Here's why. Likely the last meal you ate before breakfast was last night's dinner. Maybe that was 7:00 pm. Maybe you ate a snack at 9:00 and went to bed at 11:00. If you sleep eight hours, get up and go to work until 12:00 before eating, that's 15 hours between meals (17 if…

Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.

The Center for Disease Control calculates BMI as follows: Weight x 703 / height (inches) / height (inches) 190 x 703 / 66 / 66 = 30.7%.

How do you eat cottage cheese in the car on the way to work?

Let me start by saying I really don't have any weight to lose. I joined MFP to "clean up" my diet. I wanted to get rid of the junk food. Theoretically, you can eat what you want if you are below your calories. Here's the tricky part. Eating a lot of foods that are high in simple carbohydrates will digest really fast. So…

Masters swim programs are tough. Depending on the demand for pool time they can be very competitive. I'm a medium swimmer and felt uncomfortable in one gym's pool because it was very crowded. If they are fighting for lanes, you'd be better off trying to find a partner close to your ability that can keep you moving.

A lot of members have told you why you need to eat 1200 calories so I suspect you got your answer. But here's a tip that may help you stay on track. It's not always how much you eat but what you eat. Complex carbs, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains can take more than an hour for your body to digest leaving you…

I/m a runner and cyclist so carbs do not matter much to me. You can eat wheat pasta (210 cal for 2 oz uncooked), brown rice (216 cal for 1/4 c uncooked), oatmeal (150 cal for 1/2 c uncooked). Feel free to look at my diary. I eat close to 2000 cal per day (except rest days).

I feel the same way. Grilled sweet potatoes with dinner tomorrow for sure!

Red Bull Lite, and many "diet" beverages contain Aspartame and/or Acesulfame K; artificial sweeteners that allow manufacturers to make drinks "that taste good and are good for you." Here are two segments from articles about both artificial sweeteners. Aspartame - One of the criticisms of using aspartame-sweetened foods for…

I don't think pizza is fast food. Look at the nutritional value compared to a Big Mac. Pizza (1 slice) = 272 kcal, 135 carb, 88 fat, 49 protein Big Mac = 540 kcal, 45 carb, 260 fat, 25 protein I admit pizza is not the best food to lose weight with because of the fat but it's far better than a Big Mac (or any "fast food")

Ride a bike. You can find bike groups for all levels and they will certainly find time to play.

All plyometric exercises will help strengthen your legs for running. Lunges, box jumps, squats, etc. are all good exercises. What matters most is what you want to run. Look at the difference between a sprinter's legs and a distance runner's legs. Sprinters need strong hamstring and quad muscles to propel them quickly.…

I don't mean to bring the Bible into this for fear of offending anyone but... By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.

Great story. Be careful because triathlons are addicting. Best of luck in your first race. Tell us about your experience afterward.

I have three suggestions: Make sure you eat something before you start. I usually eat toast with peanut butter and a banana. Make sure it is something you know will not cause an upset stomach during the run. Bring water. If you don't like to carry water when you run. Drive your route ahead of time and drop a water bottle…
