I'm in the southeast US. Oranges are from China, so no, bison and oranges never naturally occur together. While it seems like oranges are natural and bison are imported, it's actually the reverse. And in addition to bison farms and orange groves, the bayous are now rice paddies. It's a global culture!

A binge or compulsive eater is someone who consumes thousands of calories in minutes, seemingly against his or her will. It's not about pleasure or hunger but about emotional issues. Are you doing that? If so, you need help. There's plenty of help out there for people with eating disorders, including Overeaters Anonymous,…

Around here, fortunately, we go to the actual farm. I went to the cheese farm and asked the woman if she sold her chickens. Turns out they are her pets -- I think she was about to stroke out when I talked about cooking them. On a related note, when I was strolling down the cereal aisle the other day, I noticed that…

I'm glad that currently there's a hyper awareness of food production. I remember the arid desert that was the grocery store in the 1980s. Thank god for the re-emergence of the small farmer -- the craft farmer? The artisinal farmer? Today, I can purchase beef, chicken, cheese, wine, honey, ALL THE FRUIT and VEG, and tons of…

Please take everyone's advice to heart and don't change your diet too drastically. All foods can be enjoyed as long as you are eating them in moderation. And weigh and measure your food religiously!

OP: What are your eating habits? Give us a typical day. Or open your diary.

Don't fear fat! Fat is what makes you feel full and makes food tasty. Use full fat milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, etc. These will help you hit your fat macro. I don't really eat foods out of boxes (mac and cheese, hamburger helper, Pillsbury, Kraft, etc), so I don't know if that stuff comes in low fat versions, but if it…

Suspense is killing me, OP! Did you poop yet?

OP, if you ever come back, did your doctor say to cut out sugar or did your doctor say to get the child on a diet of high-nutrient foods that fill him up and reduce his excess calories? If you ever come back and would like to learn more about how to help your son achieve long-term success, you might want to find out the…

Not my argument at all. I haven't ever suggested that someone eliminate a food because I or anyone else thinks it's "bad for you." I'm not one of the good food v bad food people. Also, I don't think certain foods in and of themselves make people fat. Extra calories make people fat, not the food itself. I do believe that…

I joined Overeaters Anonymous 10 years ago, stopped eating my trigger foods, got a sponsor, followed a food plan, and worked the steps. It was free mental health counseling for me. Other people have gone to OA and have found it wasn't for them. Either way, getting some mental health counseling is really important. Here's a…

You just haven't found the right donut.

I'm successful. I've been successful for 10 years (have kept 40 pounds off). I did it through woo woo science (sugar addition!) and elimination (no desserts for nearly 10 years). I did it with people who held my hand and let me cry and let me find my own path. These same people gave me strength by telling me about their…

Yep. I eat fish tacos, potato chips, pizza, tater tots, and cheeseburgers every week. I have one or two beers every week, and sometimes three or four. I eat out at least three times for lunch every week, and at least once for dinner every week. I do it on 1390 calories (not one of which is a salad calorie). I'm down 20…

People who have a compelling reason to eliminate food can and do successfully eliminate all the time. That includes any compelling reason, including "I can't control myself around X food".

As we wish you luck on your zero tolerance attitude towards gluten for the rest of your life. Cheers!

This guy isn't being brutally honest. He's just blaming other people for his failure as a successful motivator. In the first two minutes of meeting someone, he's not assessing where they are and what are the best tools to help motivate them. He's merely assessing whether or not they will be successful with the single tool…

I had lost significant weight (at least 50 pounds both times) twice -- once in my 20s and once in my 30s -- and I always gained it back. Losing weight never fixed my binge eating. With the addiction model, I finally had the right tools to fix my problem. I don't binge eat any more. But, it's so much more than that. I don't…
-
Just wait. You've already lost a ton of water weight, so that's all gone. Now you will start losing at a slower rate. I haven't checked your numbers, but 1200 seems very low for someone who is 5'7" and active. I'm 5'4" and basically a sloth, and I eat 1390 every day and am losing a pound a week. Fast weight loss is due…

Conceptualizing my binging as an addiction was the only thing that made it possible for me to deal with my binge eating. I'd been on plenty of diets, met with dietitians, hired trainers, lost weight, gained weight, etc. etc. Once I started thinking about my binge eating as an addiction, everything made total sense. I am a…

At the risk of kicking off a flag war, this is HILARIOUS. Best gif of the day.

I'm there with you. Sometimes I write a post specifically mocking someone's atrocious spelling. Then I get over myself and rewrite or delete the post. It does feel good, though, to be a total a-hole for a minute.
-
I did not see this coming. OP you got great answers with hardly any snark, only one total a-hole and only minor squabbling -- practically only footnote worthy! -- about good v bad. That's a MFP win if I've ever seen one.

I had a similar question because I've been doing "strength training" during the day at work -- bodyweight squats, walking lunges, pushups off the desk (I can't do floor pushups yet!), gallon jug rows, that sort of thing. Just fitting it in during the odd free moments. I thought that it probably wasn't burning very many…

I just remembered another one -- going to the doctor's office and when they ask "what medications are you on" and I say "none," I always get a look of surprise, and then they say: "None?" It makes me feel super healthy.

I love the comments about the knees! So true! I get service in stores and restaurants whereas before I might as well have been invisible.

Hi OP: The best way to weigh and measure everything is to get a digital food scale. They aren't very expensive (I've see $19 for one at Walmart). Also, don't trust the MFP database without double checking. There's a lot of good information in there, but there's also a lot of bad information. I always weigh my food in…

This has been a really fun thread to read. When I make a recipe for something that I'd like to eat but want to try to make it with lower calories, I make three batches: the original version, the low-cal version, and a third version where I do substitutions because I think they might work. I then do a taste test to rank…
